I've always been a fan of a stories about being transported to another world, I'm a huge Chronicles of Narnia fan and I had read many books about travelers to another worlds. But on the august 1st 2021 I finally started watching isekai genre of anime. In less than a two years since then, I've watched 69 different isekai anime, plus 16 isekai-like fantasy anime (133 titles in total, if counting different seasons, OVA, specials, movies etc. separately, like MyAnimeList does) According to MyAnimeList I've completed 310 anime titles in total, so isekai takes more than 40% of my anime interests. [Interesting fact, I havent started Sword Art Online or Log Horizon yet, so none of their many seasons/OVA/specials/movies are counted towards my isekai total number] My sanity is on the same level as it was before my isekai addiction, so it's not that impressive to not loose it :-)

just because I'm bored, here's my ideal isekai plot: in our modern time, a child is born to a family with a very old promise to fulfill. a long time ago, a contract was forged between a member of a particular family, and a being from another world. this ancestor had summoned the being to earth with some kind of ritualistic magic, so the creature could help them in their time of need, and save them from calamity. but once this favor was done, the conditions of the contract were set to be an equal exchange... the price for this entity's help was that someday, the family would have to send someone of their bloodline to the other world... and this person would be automatically transported to a point in time when their society needs a mythical hero of it's own. of course, after this magical being goes back to its own dimension, the family quickly sets aside their thoughts about the contract. at first it was just... parents caring too much for their children to send them on purpose. and eventually, it'd been so long that the contract faded from the memories of the future generations, until it was all but forgotten. little did they know, the contract has a fail-safe feature. if a member of the family is not consciously sent, after a certain amount of time, the contract will grab a member of the family by force. the way this works is that an invisible curse mark will be set upon each new member of the family at birth, which requires a blood sacrifice to activate. so it might be a while before the conditions are met, but the mark will trigger automatically once it happens. enter, truck-kun. a kid is on her way to school, and is taking a route she isn't familiar with. she tries to run across a busy street because she's already late, and the truck driver only sees her at the last minute. at the point when the collision would've occurred, a hole opens in time and space, and everything is sucked in... the child, the truck, the driver, and even parts of the roadway... like a bite taken out of the earth. the truck driver is a 35 year old woman, down on her luck, who took this job because it payed better than working at a convenience store. the kid is an 11 year old girl, fresh into middle school, who was already nervous about her first day. neither of them knows what the fuck is going on, and, more importantly, neither of them knows who is _supposed_ to be there, and who is the accidental tag along. tropes say it'd be the kid, but neither have ever been mortally wounded, or had anyone else be mortally wounded in their presence before, and the magic was so old that there's no way to actually tell who it was attached to anymore. neither of them even knows if they can get back once the promised task is completed, and it's actually very distressing, because both of them had family and friends back home. but once the shock wears off, I feel like these two, the truck driver and the middle schooler, would slowly come to the conclusion that they should be in this together. the kid is mostly just scared, and hasn't at all warmed to the idea of doing this quest thing, but she's also 11 and doesn't really feel like she has any power in this situation at all. meanwhile the truck driver is an adult, and she's very much like "jesus fucking christ, this might as well happen" but also, she just can't see herself abandoning this 11 year old kid to handle all this on her own. the two slowly become this unlikely duo... they're schrodinger's hero, by virtue of the fact that they don't know who is actually supposed to be doing this. and depending on who is assuming they must have the contract, vs. who is assuming they're the tag along, there's the potential of bitterness about being dragged along, or guilt for having dragged someone else along. maybe there's a progression from the two accusing each other like "if you hadn't hit me with your truck, none of this would be happening!" "oh yeah? well if you hadn't run in front of my truck, I wouldn't have hit you!" type bickering, to each of them deciding "I'll protect you, because it's possible you wouldn't even be here if it weren't for me." and eventually, it ceases to matter. they're both there, and they feel better when they're helping each other out. also, the 35 year old truck driver is a lesbian who gets to meet a lot of hot women, but she was already 35 and single back on earth because she isn't smooth, so we'd get to watch her fumble the "isekai protagonist surrounded by hot women" role in hilarious and heartwarming fashion, while the 11 year old judges her for having no game whatsoever. like "she's 35 years old, how is she even doing this." type of bone-deep cutting judgemental middle schooler commentary. I imagine there's eventually a cute love story that could develop between the truck driver and another member of their found family adventuring party that would eventually form... and you could do a lot with the other members of that adventuring party. I mean, both these people are only here by accident in the first place, and the society they find themselves walking into may or may not remember this magical contract themselves. their society is guaranteed to need help, but can either of these two actually meaningfully make a difference? well... magic-wise, they may be at least obligated to try, if they ever want the chance to go back to where they came from. also I think it'd be cool if humans who are transported to this world get the chance to manifest magical abilities, same as people who are naturally born here, which would give each character the potential for an arc discovering what they can do, or figuring out how to make their abilities useful, if either of them gets something strange. also also, this world would NOT be some generic medieval fantasy world with nothing but stone buildings, grassy fields, dirt roads, and some trees... I'd want this shit to be kinda grungy, like it's on the precipice of an apocalyptic event, or maybe it'd go full alien weird, or fae folk but in a fucked up way, in some places... maybe they have weird fairy magic bio technology... like, in order to activate something, you make a small food sacrifice on a rune, like nuts or berries or something, but you'll get a more potent magical result if you use blood, bone, or meat. something weird like that... I'd want the world to be actually very unfamiliar. somebody please just make an isekai that does something _else_ like... we'll have friggin vending machines before we get anything actually cool. ;_;

Can we have a serious talk about how big DBZ actually was in the early 2000s, and saying that you watched DBZ then wouldn't have made you a weeb? It was the MOST POPULAR SHOW among guys 13-50 on TV. Hell some times it was the MOST WATCHED SHOW in America period. Even beating out shows on Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC. It's manga outsold every comic book, or graphic novel in America besides Spider-Man until Superhero Comic Movies became mainstream. Edit: If you are millennial or the last bit of Gen X raised in America there's a near certainty that you watched DBZ at least one point in your childhood or teen years.

I'd usually recommend Ghiblis or some work of makoto shinkai for starters coz.. that's like tasteful stuff and Can be enjoyed by any age group

For action fans I tend to recommend AOT or Chainsaw Man, but for almost anyone else I recommend Your Name. The animation is beautiful and the story is great, I feel like I could keep pretty much anyone's attention

Here's the main problem with Isekai's. Authors are too afraid to steer away from the fantasy genre. That's why they all blend together and look so generic so much and why Tanya stood out. We could have so many unique world designs but Fantasy has just been overtaken by Isekai stories.

With so many actual trash (not entertaining and well written trash like EIS and Re:0) unoriginal Isekai power-fantasy copy-paste light-novel anime adaptations dropping every season without end, it’s nice when the actually good ones get to carry on for more seasons. It sucks waiting years at a time for another season of Re:Zero when “summoned again as an aristocrat to another generic world with my smartphone” always seems to get a second season right away

I think SAO Is a good introduction for anime. More specifically the Aincrad arc, because it introduces a lot of classic anime troupe. Though I do like season 1 of Alicization better.
