I'm a retired stonemason. That type of rock is scoria. Perfect for wet walls and artificial waterfalls of which I've built many around the Whitsunday islands in Australia and other places. There's a certain peace in stonework and scoria is a delight.

Bringing a furniture maker’s sensibility to a rock wall is well done . Everything this man does is extraordinary in my eyes . I share a craft with him , his demeanor and thought process is always a pleasure to watch

I’m always fascinated at just how much of perfectionists the Japanese are. It doesn’t matter whether it’s chipping rocks, making school lunches, building a car, or cleaning a toilet, they have everything down to an exact science. Always entertaining for me to watch.

Wood or rock, planning, patience and precision equals perfection. In furniture that is really what the Ishtani name is all about. Wouldn’t the world be a nice place if everyone held this philosophy with every task?

Maybe... Hahaha I loved your work, the stones are beautiful, here in Brazil this type of stone does not easily exist, but here is a land of God, there are no volcanoes, earthquakes, tornadoes ... The wall reminded a neighbor from childhood, his father who made it. Congratulations, always inspiring us.

I would say: Wabi-sabi in perfection - even if that is a contradiction. The Wall is perfect, partly because it is unfinished. Thank you for this beautiful video, Ishitani-san and Chie-san. Georg (who didn't finish his conservatory either, before the first snow)

Your patience never ceases to amaze me! 3:30 I was wondering if you were going to use feathers and irons to split some of the rock. It was interesting to see them being used. If I may make a suggestion, a dust mask and eye protection would be a good idea when drilling the rock and mixing the mortar. Rock dust and lime can be pretty nasty to your eyes and lungs. It's too bad you ran out of time, but you've made an excellent start. The wall is beautiful!
