Even since I was a young kid, I recognized that there is something about the clean, simple yet elegant Japanese designs that somehow bring out the natural beauty of wood int a shining gem. As I watched this, I was thinking "Wow... one screw up in the placement of a hole or notch, one cut a little too deep or just a bit off could ruin a piece that has a lot of work sunk in it." And the second thought is that that must be a really satisfying occupation: as a craftsman, to produce something like that: no screws, no nails, no glue: it just all fits together, tight and snug: beautiful! It was a pleasure to watch.

You should also acknowledge that Japan had a really scarce supply of quality iron, because of that iron was mostly used to produce weapons, armor and tools - so they had to improvise with what little supplies they had

The one thing I love about the Japanese and find inspiring is their work ethic and the high level of care they put into their work. They are proud of their work. They are highly skilled at it what they do. That shows in their workmanship. They are probably the best in the world at whatever they do. I really do find that inspiring, and to a certain degree I am envious.

The humble pine wood in the hands of a craftsman can become a beautiful piece of furniture. Simply add skill! Great work.
@fatroberto30128 ай бұрын
The wood is Japanese Cypress. It's not construction timber! Although technically it's a softwood it is a slow growing and quite hard wood. Whenever you see a video of a Japanese craftsman making seemingly impossibly clean cuts in what looks like pine, it is usually cypress.
