Hello Master. Always enjoys watching your fine methods of work. The only thing I have always been wondering : since you are such a great master, and lover of precision and accuracy (2 different things) why do you never join inclined legs to their base in a proper joint : i.e. you keep the legs with their radius reduction perpendicular to their own center-line axis, rather than tilting to be flush with the base?
@MrKikoboy6 жыл бұрын
It's because the tenon is turned on a lathe - the shoulder can only be 90 degrees to the leg ( unless he spent a *lot* more time hand carving the shoulder ) - there is a way to turn the tenon at the angle but it results in short grain sections making it much weaker ( off centre turning ) - it's much easier to do with square stock but it doesn't match the piece...
@Metalloys6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mr. Kikoboy. However there is another way which is increasing the bore in the Base to accept 1 or 2 cm of the full width of the leg and hide the unpleasant appearance of a slanted edge.
@MrKikoboy6 жыл бұрын
That would work - add an extra step though- or he could turn a longer tenon and just flare the leg diameter further down as well instead of having a hard shoulder....
@JapaneseJoinery6 жыл бұрын
Going off the channel and his style I am going to guess it is an intentional design choice. I think the beauty in his work is the use of techniques that can be achieved using only hand tools. ...Is this an example of the joint you were referencing? www.instructables.com/id/Easy-Angled-Mortices-on-the-Drill-Press-Attaching-/

One important trait of this furniture is a consistent level of detail all over. I was considering the choice to stain the feet. Without it the feet would be plain, and the overall colour of it is plain, so with one change (the staining), it completes the item.
