Martin Scorsese first became aware of Leonardo DiCaprio after seeing him in What's eating Gilbert Grape? one night when watching TV. He had also been told about him by his friend and frequent collaborator Robert DeNiro, who worked with DiCaprio on This Boy's Life (1993). Scorsese and DiCaprio would later go on to work together on five films, starting with Gangs Of New York (2002).

Why does everyone have to bring out all the superlatives and pour as much praise as they possibly can on films and actors... constantly claiming people or movies to be the best of all time... almost everyone has to go completely over the top. It's a manifestation of the exact behaviour depicted in 'king of comedy' and I don't understand the need to put anyone else so high on a pedestal. Maybe it's to claim their success as your own so you feel like you're on the same team in some way. I wish people would have a bit more self respect and sense of their own identity. Nothing and nobody is the 'greatest ever'. You are the best thing you've got.

DiCaprio is the actor who has more power and control over his projects than DeNiro ever did. The Aviater and WOWS were his projects before Scorsese came on board. Shutter Island and Departed came to both at the same time. OnlyGONY was Scorseses project to begin with and that didnt get the grean light until DiCaprio agreed to be in it.
