JAIVA DHARMA Who are those who are qualified to understand spiritual matters?? In Bhagwat gita 10 :10 krishna says tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam dadami buddhi-yogam tam yena mam upayanti te तेषां सततयुक्तानां भजतां प्रीतिपूर्वकम्‌ । ददामि बद्धियोगं तं येन मामुपयान्ति ते ॥ Commentary by Sri Vishvanatha Chakravarthi Thakur “It is understood that the joy of the devotee described in the previous verse is spiritual bliss beyond the modes. But which method do the devotees gain direct contact with you? And from what source do they gain realization?” I give buddhi yoga to those who are desirous of association with me constantly (satata yuktanam). This means that the Lord alone causes buddhi yoga (bhakti yoga) to appear within the functions of their hearts. This buddhi yoga cannot be obtained at all from any other source. It is given only by me and received only by the devotee. By this bhakti, they attain me; they attain direct association with me (upayanti-they come near Me). Consciousness is the state of experiential awareness of the soul ranging down from trees animals who are naturally bound to material consciousness or°I am the material body ° to a fully developed consciousness of a matured devotee of krishna who has liberated himself from material consciousness that covers his spiritual experience that of 'I am not the material body but a spirit, and bound to his blissfull eternal service of the server and the served..' Although spiritual consciousness can be partially developed by the process of Yoga and dhayan or abstract meditation. As the results are incomplete and partial in its results a person invariably falls down to material consciousness again. It is only by nitya yukt sambhand gyan or knowledge fixed in eternal servitude of selfless devotion and mercy of Lord krishna and association of his devotees, that one can elevate himself to complete spiritual consciousness never to fall down to material consciousness again . In Jaiva Dharma we find in the discussion between Nyaya scholar Vrajanath and Raghunath das babaji maharaj the following Vrajanatha: How many types of baddha-jivas are there? Babaji: There are five kinds, namely, those whose consciousness is completely covered (acchadita-cetana); those whose consciousness is shrunken or contracted (sankucita-cetana); those whose consciousness is budding slightly (mukulita-cetana); those with developed consciousness (vikasita-cetana); and those with fully developed consciousness (purna-vikasita cetana). Vrajanatha: Which jivas have completely covered consciousness? Babaji: These are jivas with the bodies of trees, creepers, grass, stone and so on, who have forgotten service to Krsna, and are so engrossed in the material qualities of maya that they have no trace of their sentient nature. There is only a slight indication of their sentience through the six transformations. This is the lowest stage of the jiva's fall, and this fact is corroborated by the epic stories of Ahalya, Yamalarjuna, and Sapta-tala. One only reaches this stage because of some grave offense, and one can only be delivered from it by Krsna's mercy. Vrajanatha: Which jivas have contracted consciousness? Babaji: Beasts, birds, snakes, fish, aquatics, mosquitoes, and various similar creatures have shrunken or contracted consciousness. The consciousness of these jivas is apparent to some degree, unlike that of jivas in the previous group, whose consciousness is completely covered. For example, these jivas perform activities such as eating, sleeping, free movement, and quarrelling with others for things that they consider their property. They also show fear, and they become angry when they see injustice. However, they have no knowledge of the spiritual world. Even monkeys have some scientific understanding in their mischievous minds, for they have some idea of what will or will not happen in the future, and they also have the quality of being grateful. Some animals have good knowledge about various objects, too, but despite all these attributes, they do not have a propensity for inquiring about Bhagavan, so their consciousness is contracted. It is said in sastra that Maharaja Bharata still had knowledge of the names of Bhagavan, even while he was in the body of a deer, but this is unusual; it only happens in special cases. Bharata and King Nrga had to take birth as animals because of their offenses, and they were delivered when their offense was nullified by Bhagavan's mercy. Vrajanatha: Which jivas have slightly budding consciousness (mukulita-cetana)? Babaji: Conditioned jivas with human bodies fall into three categories: those with slightly budding consciousness (mukulitacetana), those with developed consciousness (vikasita-cetana), and those with fully developed consciousness (purna-vikasita-cetana). Generally, the human race can be divided into five groups: 1) immoral atheists, 2) moral atheists, 3) moral theists, who have both morals and faith in Isvara, 4) those who are engaged in sadhanabhakti, and 5) those who ar e engaged in bhava-bhakti. Those who are knowingly or unknowingly atheists are either immoral or moral atheists. When a moral person develops a little faith in Isvara, he is called a moral theist. Those who develop interest in sadhana-bhakti according to the tenets of sastra are called sadhana-bhaktas, and those who have developed some unalloyed love for Isvara are called bhava-bhaktas. Both immoral and moral atheists have slightly budding consciousness; moral theists and sadhana-bhaktas have developed consciousness; and the bhavabhaktas have fully developed consciousness. Of these 5 categories we can see mostly in kaliyug mostly all are in the level of mukulita chetana or budding conscience .They are humans having human body. hands and feet yet but consciousness too crouched to understand the concept of Spirit or Spirituality and therefore are almost on the level of contracted consciousness. These include people who do not follow the Vedas multifarious atheistic faiths and also those who are although born in a hindu, vedic family but due to bad association has contracted an almost negative or non intresting attitude towards vedas.Although identifying them as Hindus but believe by lip service only. Vikasit chetana are of two types on the lower level are the people following varna and ashram dharma .Karma.gyan .Yog etc.and also sadhan bhaktas or bhaktas on the lower apprentice or practictioners position still trying to elevate himself lower level of anarthas like karma ,gyan and yog, and various aparadhas.Ones who's Consciousness is not strongly fixed in Krishna consciousness. But doing it as an obligatory duty. Seeing both the spiritual and worlds but not determined in and sadhana to attain the Spiritual self. Purna Vikasit chetanas are those with developed consciousness who are higher in krishna consciousness. Th VBose who understand the scriptures also determined and strong in practice .Those who are able to discuss higher matters as also who can explain them .They are the genuine bhagwat kathakar . But still on the platform of the second level of Anarthas.,Those who have not yet attained the Vishuddha state of selfless Prema bhakti. Question: What is the definition of a Vaishnava? grhitaivisnudiksako visnu-pujaparo narah vaisnavo 'bhihito 'bhijnairitaro 'smadavaisnavah "One who is initiated into the Vaishnava mantra and who is devoted to worshipping Lord Vishnu/Krishna is a Vaishnava. One who is devoid of these practices is not a Vaishnava. (quote from Hari-bhakti-vilas,11, quoted from Padma Purana) Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu explains three kinds of Vaishnavas: An Ordinary Vaishnava: prabhu-kare, 'yanra mukhe suni eka-bara krsna-nama, sei pujya, srestha sabakara "Who chants the holy name of Krishna just once may be considered a Vaishnava. Such a person is worshipable and is the topmost human being." (CC. Mad.15.106) A Superior Vaishnava, krsna-nama nirantara yanhara vadane se vaisnava-srestha, bhaja tanhara carane "A person who is always chanting the holy name of the Krishna is a superior Vaishnava and your duty is to serve his lotus feet." (CC. Mad.16.72) The Topmost Vaishnava, yanhara darsane mukhe aise krsna-nama tanhare janiha tumi vaisnava-pradhana "The topmost Vaishnava is he/she whose very presence makes others chant the holy name of Krishna. Such a Vaishnava is superior to all others!" (CC. Mad.16.74)
