Islam Makhachev - A MATTER OF DESTINY (DOC)

Islam Makhachev (born 27 October 1991) is a Russian professional mixed martial artist and former Sambo competitor. He currently competes in the Lightweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is the current UFC Lightweight Champion. A professional competitor since 2010, Makhachev was the combat sambo world champion at 74 kilograms in 2016. As of November 14, 2022, he is #2 in the UFC men's pound-for-pound rankings.
Makhachev faced Charles Oliveira for the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 280 on October 22, 2022. Makhachev won the bout and the title in the second round via arm-triangle choke after knocking down Oliveira with a punch.
Makhachev is scheduled to make his first title defense against current UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski on February 12, 2023 at UFC 284.

One of the most intimidating things about Khabib, even after retiring, is that his honest assessment of a fight’s outcome can be misinterpreted as trash talk at all. What people do not seem to understand when Khabib refers too ''take the opponent to deep waters'' is that him (and now Makhachev) have a style in which they work and hit the adversary body in such a way, that it prevents him to breath properly. The way that Khabib took the torch from his father (reluctantly at first) and ascended to the role of leader and mentor at blazing speed, ushering in the “Islam Era” per “Father’s Plan” was a thing of beauty; somewhat akin to a poignant sports movie of the highest caliber. To watch Khabib carry Islam across the octagon, after his pupil submitted the all-time submission leader, was a scene that stood in stark contrast to the last time The Eagle was in the octagon in Abu Dhabi. On that day, he was overcome with emotion after a legacy-capping victory against Justin Gaethje that surely elicited mixed emotions from the Dagestani great. Seeing Khabib sobbing on the octagon canvas, his body curled into a near-fetal position as he no doubt thought about his father and the fact he wasn’t there to share the moment with him, was the hardest moment I have had to witness as a longtime MMA fan. Cut to October 22nd, 2022… and the joy I saw on Khabib’s face as he undoubtedly spoke to his father (verbally or not, it didn’t matter) and told him, as his father surely knew he would: WE DID IT, FATHER. ISLAM IS LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION. WE DID IT. Watching from his place in eternity, I know Abdulmanap gave his son a wry smile and said “Yes, but you must not let pride get in the way. Always remember to be humble.” And with that… Abdulmanap and his legacy are starting over, yet CONTINUING, under the watchful eye and caring leadership of one of the greatest to ever pursue this amazing sport we love… Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov. I do think there's a bit of post-humous respect going into that statement. Abdulmanap was an excellent Sambo and Wrestling coach with an eye for conditioning, but he hasn't exactly produced well rounded MMA fighters like Zahabi. I mean Khabib and Islam have excellent grappling, but they are awful striker's in comparison to many fighters (Islam is significantly better than Khabib in this regard though), and don't have a well rounded gameplan. The Dagestani style excels at pressuring guys who aren't on the same level wrestling wise (and who are often physically smaller given the size advantage Khabib had for example), but it lacks the variety of other gameplans. That's going to work well until someone comes along who has the takedown defence to deal with it while also being a well rounded fighter regarding striking. Khabib took a significant amount of damage walking through punches and relying on his chin, if guy's like Gaetjhe had been less afraid of the takedown and could hold their own sitting down on their punches could have been deadly (Gaetjhe was basically not commiting to many strikes due to the takedown threat and still hit harder than anyone Khabib had ever fought by his own volition). Obviously Islam was also KOed earlier in his career because he doesn't have the same chin as Khabib, which forced him to adopt a far more defensive gameplan (they both excel at Sambo style wrestling but have very different approaches in regards to tempo). If they don't adapt that gameplan, and produce more fighters like Zabit, who was fairly well rounded with great striking, I don't think it's going to stay so dominant as the sport evolves, which it is doing constantly. Khabib never really fought a great grappler with striking skills, and while Islam has, the most well rounded guy he's fought was Charles', who basically seemed like he didn't take the fight seriously, refused to set anything up (the reason he got tagged was he tried the same all out offence he used in his last few fights but didn't even set-up his combo's in the same way, plus he couldn't rely on Islam being afraid of his ground game, it was a dumb gameplan to say the least), and didn't seem to have watched Islam's style at all (very defensive with a focus on overhand counters leading into a submission). It'll be interesting to see what happens when Islam fights an Oliveria who is aware of those holes in his gameplan, Volkanovski who is just one of the most well rounded, adaptable, and skilled fighters alive currently, or one of the up and coming lightweights. We have gym's that have produced multiple well rounded champion's and coaches who have demonstrated the ability to teach every aspect of MMA at a high level.

@@bossmanali I mean, not really. It's just a case of hyperspecialization, and we've seen historically this doesn't work in the long-run. It's working really well in a division dominated by striker's with few legitimate grappling threat's, but it wouldn't work anywhere near as well in Welterweight, say, in the top ranks where everyone is an elite wrestler. As we saw with Chimaev who also has that high pace wrestling style similar to the Dagestani's, and was lauded as the "next Khabib" by some, but ran into a wall with Burn's who can hold his own in wrestling at a high level despite Chimaev still being fairly significantly larger than him. BJJ had the same run in early UFC when nobody knew how to deal with submission grappling, but I wouldn't call any of the Gracie coaches "the greatest MMA coach ever" despite their fighters having overwhelming success. Also the W/L ratio of the Dagestani fighters is incredibly skewed, both Khabib and Islam fought very few legitimately credible threats, and spent most of their time beating entirely unknown fighters. I'll take a fighter with one or two losses who consistently fought the highest competition, potentially in multiple weightclasses, and did so convincingly than someone who bulldozed a bunch of can's followed by one or two actual challenges, which for Khabib was several striking specialist's in a row. That's not like Jon Jones beating literally everyone no matter the style, it's a specialist running through several stylistically favourable matchups. You can also see from those fights that had opponents like Gaetjhe themselves been more well rounded and polished, that same style would have had difficulty finding purchase (e.g. Khabib walking through shots against someone not constantly backpedaling from the takedown threat is a very bad idea). If anything Islam's style is far superior to Khabib's, but doesn't have the same dominance factor, so people rate him lower despite Islam is likely going to take far less damage and risk in his fights. So win to loss also isn't indicative of much at all unless it's only for high-level competition. Oliveria has a worse win/loss ratio than the upper ranks of lightweight that he ran through going on an 11 fight win streak. Usually when someone has an insane win rate, like 20/0, it's because they've been fed can's like professional boxer's are given to pad the record. When there's only like 5-6 legitimate threat's in many divisions, that means nothing. The majority of success the Dagestani style has seen is at lightweight, a division dominated by striker's where even wrestler's refuse to wrestle. Khabib was also HUGE for the division, like he's more in line with Usman's frame than he is Poirier or McGregor, who are both natural lightweights. That has a HUGE impact on performance for wrestler's because any size advantage conveys a massive wrestling advantage relative to their opponent. Makachev also has a similar build, so the same points can be made there as well, though his style is far more submission and counter reliant with a focus on defense than Khabib's high-pace pressure from the get-go. The test for the Dagestani style is whether it can remain relevant five years from now, and whether any Dagestani fighter can take it into their natural weightclass and succeed.

I remember when I first found your channell and you were funny, street smart, with your tough as nails accent talking about fighters kicking the shit out of other fighters. I said it a while back: Oliveira was the perfect example of a David vs Goliath story and proof an individual can do what they must if they try hard enough. Makhachev is an example of the other side of that coin: the power of inherited will. He wouldn't even be here if he was on his own, he knows that he owes his life to Khabib's family so when Abdulmanap passed and Khabib retired he knew he had to pick up the mantle. Their stories are so similar you'd be forgiven for thinking I was wrong but Charles and Islam had one major difference in what their legacy would mean to them. For Charles it would be justification for all the sacrifices over the years but for Islam it would validate all the hard work and faith the Nurmagomedov family put into him. God damn I love these two fighters I get misty eyed just thinkin' bout their story great work as always MMW. TL;DR: Charles: We did it I'm the champion. Islam: We did it you were all right I can be great.

I love both Charles and Islam. They both have such inspiring stories, but they are not the main character in this story.. You'd even be wrong to think that Khabib is the main protagonist. The main character in this legendary story was AbdulManap. Its a story of a man who uplifted his entire nation, by taking a dozen boys under his wing. What a legacy!

Love your video as always. Perheps the most entertaining MMA channel on youtube by a long shot. BUT you got a few things wrong 1) Islam was always down to fight in Brazil. He even made posts on IG/Twitter calling him out. Even Ali made posts tagging ufc to make the fight happen in brazil. Ultimately it was UFC who wanted it in Abu dhabi to cash in on a muslim fighter 2) I always hate when people say Abu dhabi is a "hostile" territory. It is anything but that. Dustin when in there saying same thing but he literally said how wrong he was to think that. Charles was literally taken to tour the entire abu dhabi by the locals there and he got just as well of a reception that Islam did. Islam was more than less silent the entirety of this saga. Khabib was the one getting into Charles' head and engaging in the psychological warfare, while his "army" aka his fighter (Islam) was preparing for battle. Keeping the enemy distracted while you build your army for absolute victory. Elite mentallity with elite training, determination and positive reinforcement manifested into reality. Beautiful, and ugly. That is why we love this sport. It is deeper than "cage fighting" as the casual audience will always revert back to. This is true psychological warfare/Martial Arts at it's finest. Charles was on edge, angry through camp....challenging Khabib even before he'd fought his opponent....weighing himself down with baggage that would eventually follow him into the octagon, and lead to his ultimate defeat. Brilliant video, brother. Happy new year to everyone. Let's make this world great again.
