Islam Makhachev (born 27 October 1991) is a Russian professional mixed martial artist and former Sambo competitor. He currently competes in the Lightweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is the current UFC Lightweight Champion. A professional competitor since 2010, Makhachev was the combat sambo world champion at 74 kilograms in 2016. As of November 14, 2022, he is #2 in the UFC men's pound-for-pound rankings.
Makhachev faced Charles Oliveira for the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 280 on October 22, 2022. Makhachev won the bout and the title in the second round via arm-triangle choke after knocking down Oliveira with a punch.
Makhachev is scheduled to make his first title defense against current UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski on February 12, 2023 at UFC 284.

If this was a movie, no one would believe it. The story is already written, it’s just so incredible. -An ex-military man named AbdulManap raises a village of children as tough fighters to protect them from war-torn environment in harsh mountains -He selflessly trains the children with equal amounts of discipline and love. Taking care of their every need, becoming more than a coach. He becomes their guardian and their family. -He sees his son (Khabib) as the toughest of them (he even had Khabib wrestle a bear at the age of 8) and another younger fighter (Islam) as the most talented. -Khabib joins the UFC and eventually becomes undefeated champion in biggest stage after going through so much adversity. Islam is right beside Khabib helping him and supporting him in his journey. -The coach passes away but not before successfully cornering his son in his second title defense. -AbdulManap's widowed wife tells his son to stop fighting. It pains her heart to watch her son go fight without her husband. -Khabib promises his mother he’ll retire from the sport he loves so much. Not getting the 30th win, but at 29-0. It’s the toughest decision he makes but after he gives his word he abides by it even after getting offers for tens of millions of dollars. -Khabib sees the belt change hands, the belt he never lost, the belt his father envisioned for the younger teammate, Islam. He sees the hope of Dagestan slowly disappear since they no longer had a champion. -He finally understands his fathers grand mission. It wasn’t just for Khabib, or even Islam. It was for the children of Dagestan to have hope. It was for the generation of innocent children without a clear path to success. -Khabib picks up where his father left. He becomes a full time coach and promoter. -He vows to fulfill fathers plan to first bring the belt back to Dagestan, through Islam. It's his time to help Islam like Islam helped him. -Khabib fulfills his father’s plan when Islam recaptures the belt that was never taken from Dagestan. Khabib and Islam both continue to serve their people, just like Khabib said in his Hall of Fame speech. Live with a higher purpose and give back to others. The movie ends, but the legacy continues.

One of the most intimidating things about Khabib, even after retiring, is that his honest assessment of a fight’s outcome can be misinterpreted as trash talk at all. And the fact that it demonstrably got into the other guy’s head, and that Islam ultimately backed it up, makes it all the more convincing.

@Smoke Screen Bruh, they don't train combat Sambo, they specifically train the sport of Sambo. Look up the difference. If they were training combat Sambo both Khabib and Islam would have began with a far higher level of competency regarding striking. It is also very close to MMA, yes, but that's not what they are training. Also, what well rounded fighters? The two most notable Dagestani fighters are both extreme specialists, neither are particularly competent, or even decent, striker's. Khabib looked absolutely awful at striking when he first started, like he'd never even been in a fist fight let alone trained Boxing. He also led with his chin and relied on it heavily, and if his wrestling was anything but top tier he wouldn't have been anywhere near as successful as he was. Islam is much better regarding defensive striking, but you wouldn't exactly call him a decent striker, he relies on letting his opponent come forward and trying to land sloppy overhand counters that shouldn't really be landing if the opponent is both applying proper pressure and minding their defence. The fact he tagged Oliveria with it doesn't demonstrate striking prowess, it demonstrates why attacking with zero set-up and no thought to defense is a bad idea. Again, we need to look at the full picture. Abdulmanap produced very high tier grappling athletes, and most of them suck at striking. Great at wrestling. Yes. Great at MMA, which is a combination of striking and grappling. No. If the Dagestani fighters were in any division but Lightweight it would be a very different story. Khabib and Islam are both natural Welterweights, do you see them having the same dominance in that division? Again, there are more dominant champions, there are far more well rounded MMA fighters, and there are gyms that consistently produce guys who can do everything at a high level. Why is the Dagestani gym better than any of these? The only thing Khabib did better than anyone else is create a hypetrain with so much momentum that everything surrounding them is overhyped to the max.
Smoke Screen
Smoke Screen Ай бұрын
@I, CATO SICARIUS you are a newb if you think Abdulmanap haven't produced well rounded mma fighters. Combat Sambo is pretty much the closest sport there is to mma, and he has produced 3 mma champions already and has a stable of other prospects knocking on the door, who are direct result of his influence and coaching. Tristar can't carry h is jock.

The way that Khabib took the torch from his father (reluctantly at first) and ascended to the role of leader and mentor at blazing speed, ushering in the “Islam Era” per “Father’s Plan” was a thing of beauty; somewhat akin to a poignant sports movie of the highest caliber. To watch Khabib carry Islam across the octagon, after his pupil submitted the all-time submission leader, was a scene that stood in stark contrast to the last time The Eagle was in the octagon in Abu Dhabi. On that day, he was overcome with emotion after a legacy-capping victory against Justin Gaethje that surely elicited mixed emotions from the Dagestani great. Seeing Khabib sobbing on the octagon canvas, his body curled into a near-fetal position as he no doubt thought about his father and the fact he wasn’t there to share the moment with him, was the hardest moment I have had to witness as a longtime MMA fan. Cut to October 22nd, 2022… and the joy I saw on Khabib’s face as he undoubtedly spoke to his father (verbally or not, it didn’t matter) and told him, as his father surely knew he would: WE DID IT, FATHER. ISLAM IS LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION. WE DID IT. Watching from his place in eternity, I know Abdulmanap gave his son a wry smile and said “Yes, but you must not let pride get in the way. Always remember to be humble.” And with that… Abdulmanap and his legacy are starting over, yet CONTINUING, under the watchful eye and caring leadership of one of the greatest to ever pursue this amazing sport we love… Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov. RIP Abdulmanap

Your insight into the story of Khabib, Abdulmanap and Islam is the deepest and most truthful telling of the tale out there. I remember when I first found your channell and you were funny, street smart, with your tough as nails accent talking about fighters kicking the shit out of other fighters. And slowly you've morphed into a videographer who is able to see the heart of the story and tell it in world class captivating fashion. You see the truth and you tell the truth, and it is amazing. You are my favorite MMA documentary filmaker on KZbin. I think all your video's based on Khabib are amazing. I think that because you have high reverance for Khabib and his story that you gave your best, that you upped your game, that you pushed your talent further, just so that you could do it real justice. I think your work is amazing.

Scott Hall
Scott Hall 2 ай бұрын
I said it a while back: Oliveira was the perfect example of a David vs Goliath story and proof an individual can do what they must if they try hard enough. Makhachev is an example of the other side of that coin: the power of inherited will. He wouldn't even be here if he was on his own, he knows that he owes his life to Khabib's family so when Abdulmanap passed and Khabib retired he knew he had to pick up the mantle. Their stories are so similar you'd be forgiven for thinking I was wrong but Charles and Islam had one major difference in what their legacy would mean to them. For Charles it would be justification for all the sacrifices over the years but for Islam it would validate all the hard work and faith the Nurmagomedov family put into him. God damn I love these two fighters I get misty eyed just thinkin' bout their story great work as always MMW. TL;DR: Charles: We did it I'm the champion. Islam: We did it you were all right I can be great.

These stories are as heart wrenching as they are heartwarming. The feeling Oliveira must have had after getting submitted like that, parallels that of most men’s lowest lows I imagine. In contrast, Islam bringing his proclaimed destiny to fruition must be a high that few men will ever feel in their entire life.

Love your video as always. Perheps the most entertaining MMA channel on youtube by a long shot. BUT you got a few things wrong 1) Islam was always down to fight in Brazil. He even made posts on IG/Twitter calling him out. Even Ali made posts tagging ufc to make the fight happen in brazil. Ultimately it was UFC who wanted it in Abu dhabi to cash in on a muslim fighter 2) I always hate when people say Abu dhabi is a "hostile" territory. It is anything but that. Dustin when in there saying same thing but he literally said how wrong he was to think that. Charles was literally taken to tour the entire abu dhabi by the locals there and he got just as well of a reception that Islam did. Maybe islam was the favorite, but under no circumstance Charles was in a hostile territory.
