That part about environmentalism was an eye opener for me. Thank you so much. From now on I'll finally, finally be able to do my research without feeling alienated because I understand now why I've been looking at things differently. Jazaka Allah khairan.

Nice to see Imam Ahmad in conversation with Imam Tom. We benefited from Imam Ahmad's the Surah Kahf discussions in Cambridge. We continue to benefit from Imam Tom alhamdulillah. May Allah preserve them and accept their work. Ameen.

At least you LEARNED to STAND UP AGAINST TYRANNY , IN Colllege. To EMBRACE ISLAM, WAS Your BALANCE. At 74, I went THROUGH this from 7-9 years of age, in Detrout ( Questioning Church - Christian Doctrines & their UnHoly Days), later ATTENDING Un. Of Michigan, I took ISLAMIC STUDIES classes , my Last 2 years & EMBRACED ISLAM ( NOT PLANNED by me).

31:27 They're 34 cases where the woman inherts more than the man, and 3-4 cases where they have equal inheritance.

those are guidelines, if the daughter is poor and son is wealthy are you going to give more to the son? obviously not and its not a hard and fast rule - daughter falls under needy, and if equal opportunities and comfort why are you triggered by not getting the same, this is to ensure daughter is not used for inheritance and for her own value

I am usually impatient with videos even with movies or tv shows. I usually skip, fastforward or end videos abruptly. But this lecture seems too short that i finished it nonstop. Masha Allah. JazakAllahu khairan. Its always refreshing to hear your lectures or advice.

Imam Tom approaches these important matters with the logic of a mathematician. Very refreshing in a click-bait world that feeds on emotional response. He misses some points though. He provides no alternative to modern systems for us to make practical comparisons with. Perhaps this is the old Anarchist coming through. Modernity, I think, is based on (Christian?) empathy leading to egalitarianism, leading to democracy, leading to a state that reflects the public will, leading to constant reformation, leading to an effective dispute resolution process short of revolution and assassination. Imam Tom seems to prefer a society of pure "morality", leading to powerful elite interpreters of static law, leading to dictatorship, leading to no recourse for disagreement, leading to turmoil from disagreeing underclasses and inevitable revolution rather than reformation. Within Islam there are many disagreements over interpretation. Where is the process for resolution of these disagreements?

What about MUSLIMS from NonMUSLIM FAMILIES.?

Question : if I see modernity as not medievalism. Then was medievalism not also back in the day hegemonic ? I mean some choice horrors were inflicted to keep medieval societies entrenched. I am just thinking aloud. I guess I am so grateful for modernity which to me means access to education, being able to chose, to chalk my path to goals I have set myself, that I am unwilling to take it as a negative. I do recognize that nations want to dominate and promote their values on others. They do this to extract goods for themselves. For power grab. But I am not sure this process is what modernity is. Modern extraction tools make it easier, the AI can spy on us to make sure the process of domination remains in place. Modern tools are probably more effective than let’s say quartering. You can torture opponents more easily. Modernity has not defeated injustice, greed etc. a modern society can be just as unjust as a premodern one. Feudalism, serfdom are premodern but we have these oppressive systems in some fashion in modern societies too. I guess I am thinking that negative stuff exists through different eras. The ills of modernity are not unique to modernity. May be I am wrong.

To see the differences between premodern and modern power, see Foucault on sovereign vs. disciplinary power and Hallaq in The Impossible State. To offer a quick illustration: premodern power oppresses from the outside, modern power oppresses through changing your internal subjectivity. -Imam Tom
