Malaysia had high ranking VIPs who were masons since 1800s. I’ve personally seen their names on plaque in one of the lodges. I’m sure it was the same for Turkish Ottoman that housed countless number of lodges.

they often tried to replace the Ottoman house (one of the longest serving dynasty with strong political power) as how they did with the Johor Sultanate in the name of modernization and wealth, but Sultan Abdul Hamid often caught them though his Yıldız Intelligence Service (the predecessor of US's CIA that the brits barged in after WW1). They used the young turks in the end to throw themselves out.

Dr Yakoob said, ottoman could not embrace capitalism because "due to different economic structures, Limited private property, lack of trading companies, Internal trading was restricted; external trade partners were scarce". None of these were the reasons for Ottomans disregarded capitalism. Rather the idea is that capitalism is not part of the Islamic Economy, the basis of capitalism is riba and amalgamation of wealth.

That is what he meant initially when he said that their minds couldn't conceive such a (predatory) system. The context of his statement was precisely becuase of the predatory practices within capitalism.

@@alixus10agreed. Limited companies ie corporate personhood is anathema literally, or rather the Islamic equivalent. As per the Quran, God declares war.

Saying there was no capitalism is ludicrous. Check your history.

Could you please do a podcast on Ottoman finances and their relationship with Western bankers. As well as a series on Islamic history of India and Hindutva talking points.

Dr. Yakoob's entry here is terrible, they were not pagans in the start, I'm actually shocked he even says that, makes me a prof now. Where do you put Ahmed Yesevi and Naqshbandi? Where is the ehli-sunnet Seljuks who saved the Abbasid Caliphate? The entry is trash. A Texan Ottoman.
