Michael Barry, the Patti Cadby Birch Consultative Chairman, Department of Islamic Art, MMA, presents this examination of the mysterious central figure in one of the most enigmatic paintings of the Italian Renaissance, Giorgiones "Three Philosophers" (Venice, 1504). The discussion of this work, which is now in the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna, sheds light on the role that Islam and Islamic philosophy played in late medieval and early Renaissance European perceptions.

Brilliant, though there are some smaller Errors, e.g the photo of the church at 54:11 is NOT San Giovanni degli Eremiti, but San Cataldo with the Tower of Santa Maria dell'ammiraglio in the background. And Frederick was the second of his Name as Holy Roman Emperor, but the first as King of Sicily.

TRADERS is the great word to explain the painting the True Moors of Venice and it has to be said that Armenians traders "Khojjah" were since centuries used to occupy a first place in the International trade ... a banker of the Medecis was armenian origin ... and as traders who wants to developp their business in peace, they promote PEACE vs war ! this is the deep meaning of this painting ... it is a painting to glory of understanding between main military and economical strengths

The "final" interpretation of Giorgione's La Tempesta! What about the 2015 publication, "Hesiod's Theogony as source of the iconological program of Giorgione's "Tempesta" : the poet, Amalthea, the infant Zeus and the Muses" - it also claims to be "definitive".

Some very insightful points made throughout - however, Averroes sidelined in the early sixteenth century??? Averroes CONTINUED to have a huge influence in Padua. In fact, Michael Barry, failed to mention that Paduan universities championed Averroes' interpretations of Aristotle in opposition to Aquinas (and later Scholasticism). Furthermore, when Aristotle's Poetics gained a huge influence in Paduan universities in the mid-sixteenth century, Averroes middle commentary was regularly employed in its analysis. So hardly sidelined. The depiction of Averroes to the side of the so called 'School of Athens' (a seventeenth century title) merely mirrors the negative or secondary position of the philosopher that Barry showed in earlier works of art. If anything Petrarca's views were further negated in the Padua of the mid-sixteenth sixteenth century, post Raphael's work.
@pasquino0733
@pasquino0733 7 жыл бұрын
Averroes wasn't merely seen as being a commentator, some medieval scholastics and Renaissance scholars believed he drew upon lost works by Aristotle and his peripatetic followers. It would thus be most strange that such an author would be sidelined.

Thats a good point. Not all of the Moors were black or from N. Africa. The word Moor has ancient roots. The people today known as mid-easterners are actually descendents of the Hyksos invaders. they are mixed with 9 different blood types and are relatively new to the planet. They are not the original of anything.

I know what you mean Moor. So called "blacks" are actually Moors. There's really no such nationality as "black", although many have adopted that term. The true identity of so called "black" people is Moor. That does not mean that "black" implies Moor or "Moor" implies black. These term are not related, although connotations have been added to them over time. My point is, I know what you mean by saying they were "black" but melanated people, if you will, were called "Moors" at that time. Peace

You even described 'Medieval.' My dear friend even to use that word excludes much story. Just like saying Egypt without knowing the word Kemet shows a lack of reference to time. Today indeed "Moorish" isn't distinct, oh but 'Moor' denoting black Aboriginal Indigenous was indeed so in the distant past. Harmony and Love Fam.

"Moor" became a broad term for a number of associated ethnic groups who have been historically designated as "Moors". Used more generally in Europe to refer to anyone of Arab or African descent. But you're right, it's a nationality. However Moors were another name for the African American and Arab Muslims trading and living in medieval Europe. There were even Muslims from the Philippines who were called Moors. So Islam is still tied to the term in history.

His view is apologetic. Indeed he no consider many elements for example the neo-platonism, that arrived in Venice with Greek diaspora and the fall of Constantinople (1453). Indeed there is a strong influence of byzantine "icon". Unfortunately Islam philosophical influences in this period were almost nil. The Turks and Mongols were practical people. The Mamluk Egypt was decadent and besiged. In the Tamerlane Empire, the philosophers lost the heads not only ideally.

786swe How so? I find the humanist values, Greco-Roman aesthetic and Roman coding of law, double-entry accounting, prototypes of mass industrialization (as is seen with the Venetian shipyards), the proliferation of printed literature, and the legal principles of private property to be all rather dissonant to anything gleaned from Islamic and/or Moorish culture; be it the indigenous or the product of conquest. The Islamic/Moorish cultures had admirable attributes, whenever they were allowed to be enjoyed (such as in a secular Baghdad in the 1200s), but to accredit it as a progenitor to the Rinascimento is quite the mental leap.

Islamic art, this is almost all occidental art, in islam the representation of the nature is blasphemy
@almishti
@almishti 8 жыл бұрын
+Marceline The Dragon No, it's not. Nature is often represented even in mosques--scenes of nature with cities, vegetation motifs, and so on, are actually fairly common. Representations of animals, people, and even sometimes the Prophet himself and angels are common in art of the Islamic world, like in manuscript illuminations, panel paintings, etc. What is NOT allowed are representations of God, and images of the Prophet that show his face--whenever he's depicted he always has a veil over his face, even when he's shown as a new-born infant. Also, mosque paintings cannot have images of the human form. From the point of view of Islamic theology, it makes complete sense that this would not be allowed: the Christian Church makes such images b/c they believe Jesus Christ was human as well as divine, so they show him as a human to emphasize he's both, while Islam doesn't believe this: to them, Jesus was a great prophet but certainly not 'God made flesh'. But the Christians have certainly had their share of controversies about such images: the Byzantine Iconoclasm and Protestant image-smashing show that Christianity has the same tendency as Islam, if it weren't for the doctrine of "God became Man" it probably would've gone in the same direction as the Muslims and the Jews.
