Great vid, Steve. I would like to see the detail of how the windows get insulated and finished. Thanks for the info!

I really like how Steve and his guest are not defensive when they share concerns and/or advice with one another. In particular, the apparent absence of shear in the corner is a great observation by Steve, and it should be addressed by the engineer.

You need to look at the complete wall including those two triangular shaped windows. Each triangular shaped window has a common vertical stud with the window below it, while both have a decent header beam. Together this forms a triangle which gives the common LVL-stud enough rigidity to take the shear forces due to the wind load.

@@koenraadprincen7212 Interesting observation. Both Steve and the builder have the same concern, and they have called it out to the engineer. I wonder if the engineer will provide them with the same reasoning as you. Given the size of the ocean-facing wall, I am doubtful.

@@scottjackson638 The presumed lack of shear capacity is not for taking the wind loads on the big facade facing the ocean but for the wind loads on the two adjacent walls perpendicular to this big ocean-facing facade. The internal wall will take care of the wind loads hitting the ocean-facing wall. Besides that, it's always dangerous to critique design choices when the designer or engineer is absent...

@@koenraadprincen7212 I think that you may have misread my comment. The shear needs to be present on the wall facing the ocean, but I am not saying that is the direction of the wind forces (the forces of concern are perpendicular to the wall facing the ocean). Also, I am not critiquing the design, but I am asking a question. I think that engineers and designers often welcome questions and rarely do they view a thoughtful question as a critique. I think that what is dangerous is to be silent when there is a legitimate question comes to mind.

The triangle idea would work if there was something on the other side of the sheathed interior wall to resist push/pull forces. They didn’t really show that. There was a brief shot at 11:51 with them standing on the other side of that interior wall, but again, the exterior wall was basically all windows from what we could see. There may or may not be anything in the structure to prevent that interior wall tilting toward/away from where Steve was standing. If there is, it was never shown in the video.

It would be more educational if camera man was showing a close up of areas you are discussing. I’d love to see roof detail, sill detail, header … Other than that, great video and thanks for sharing!!😊

Steve, what if you used the Zip-R for the vent space instead of the plywood with the foam facing in?
@stevenbaczekarchitect943113 күн бұрын
It would slow the migration of moisture with the foam - kinda defeating the purpose of a vented roof

As I recall, the plan is to use dense pack cellolose in the roof structure. Do open web trusses present a challenge in reaching 4 pcf density given that the trusses don't create confined cavities. I hope Aron covers the insulation process in a future video. Also, just an observation, not a criticism of wood framing, but would that shear wall been necessary if the house had been ICF to the roof? Full ICF seems like a good choice for the extreme weather at this location.
@stevenbaczekarchitect943116 күн бұрын
Full ICF would likely have more reinforcement in the shear wall

Please replace the camera man or get someone who is paying attention. He literally doesn’t point the camera at anything the hosts are talking about 🤦♂️

I appreciate the comment - please understand, sometimes I find myself in situations where I need to use someone on the camera who may not have a wealth of expoerience
