Thank you so much for uploading this. This is one of based of one of the only Oliver Sacks books I haven't read yet- so it's a thrill to have found this. Sacks gets so excited about the particularities and individuality's of the human cognitive experience. It's infectious. Fascinating. Thanks

I saw this program a few years ago - Dr Sacks does a wonderful job of explaining this condition. He has other videos on his website and is a wonderful writer as well.

Thank you for the research. Now i understood how these great people perceive colors with told information, personal mental model and lightness/darkness gray light their eye cones receive. I would like to do more research and include these useful information while designing digital products for better usability.

My dad is red/green colorblind. I''ve heard about Pingelap Island, too. I've also met a couple of people who were totally colorblind.

HI there - I have the same genetic condition - complete colour blindness since birth - we should start a decent online community!

colorblind people are more prone to give birth to tetrachromats, i wonder if we can't just crispr the genetic difference and turn them in polychromats more easily than a normal people, i mean, some embrionary cells in the eye to generate more cones, as the normal cells die they can be changed to polychromatic cells, the eye's nerve can be seen as just a cable, the eye send a signal based in the frequency of ressonance of pigments, in a colorblind eye the eye can only send a determinate frequency based on the color of the person's cone cells, when i took acid i like to meditate and use cerebral control to do math and to control my body functions, it's interesting to "see" a lot of other frequencies that the brain can generate when it's receiving random frequencies, knowing what i know from the eye and my sinesthesia and even the fact that sinesthesia happens at all, especially with sound, and that there are tetrachromats that can see literally millions of times more color, i don't think our brain is bonded by a processing limits on vision color, maybe the eye's hardware, the optic fiber in a tetrachromat is exactly the same as in a monochromats and trichromats, monochromats have the same number of cells as polychromats, it's just that there's only one type of cone ,while the polychromats have their cones spreaded in a given proportion, the eye of a monochromat can send a signal of only one frequency in a certain position of the cavity, it's like a guitar note, louder or quieter depending on the light level, while the polychromat signal looks more like a chord, with various frequencies and amplitudes interlaced and multiplexed to one channel.

I'm partially colorblind, so it is not quite the same. However, I can say I lived my life and found the advantage of seeing more than color-sensitive people do. In the woods, they are blinded by color. Everything is camouflaged to them, but I can see through all the tricks of color and see the shapes and textures of what is really there. I am also aware that, if my eye is changed, by brain has no experience of processing the new information.

It is so sad that the recently invented Enchroma glasses cannot help those with total colour-blindness. Who will invent glasses to help the people of Pingelap to see colour for the first time.
@Tomchew10

Unfortunetly glasses would not help this condition. These people have a complete absence of cones, the photoreceptors responsible for colour. They do have rods, which has a pigment that can only absorb one wavelength of light. Without cones they will never be able to see colour.
