Strange thing is that "didn't I my dear" just popped into my head after a couple beers. I tried to place it but couldn't. Then "little lion man" came into my head so I googled it. Such a pleasure to revisit this masterpiece. I soaked it all in and then for some weird reason I thought what would this sound like at 2x speed (which I NEVER do)... and was blessed with laughter. I sit here nodding in agreement with myself that this last however minutes I've spent here was well worth it and from there, wondering why 'didn't I my dear' popped into my head to begin with. I was to end my engagement with this link until I saw that you sir, have the top comment which was exactly what I was not thinking, but ended up thinking.

Lost my daughter in 2019 and one of my favourite memories with her was sitting in a park in Aurora, IL listening to the Redrocks concert playing on Sirius XM on the radio in my car while we sat in the tailgate of my Juke with the hatch open and letting the music just melt over us. When this song came in we noticed for the first time that there were other people hanging around listening to the concert with us. That memory and this band keeps me going.

Heard this at summer camp in 2012. The energy on the dance floor was unmatched. Everyone was young, no responsibilities and just living life to the fullest. This song perfectly captured that moment of being young and unstoppable. No phones were on that dance floor. Everyone was just enjoying that moment. Years went by and I had no idea what this song was called. Then, this week, I found it. From that iconic banjo intro, I immediately knew this was the song. Makes me feel like I’m still at summer camp when I hear it.

Coming from religious family and community, the “F” word was never in my vocabulary growing up. To this day, I would never swear in front of my mother. When my son started saying this word while he was gaming or would listen to music with it as part of the lyrics, I would get very upset. I complained about it to a wise friend who gave me this advice: “It’s only a word and sometimes the only one that truly fits the situation. Pick your battles.” Once I gave up being so offended by the “word”, it gave me a chance to feel the feelings behind the use of it. Thanks friend. #wisefriend
@mikecc27704 жыл бұрын
Did he use it in gaming out of anger, or to convey emotions like this song? Because while it's good not to be offended by the word, I'd definitely still get involved if he gets angry at a game.

This is the first time I've heard this. I'm not ashamed to say I've had a dreadful month, perhaps the worst of my entire life. I've struggled, been hurt and I didn't know what to even do. Where were I to go after everything? It hurt so much and while I don't feel completely better yet, this helped alot. It's nice knowing, just even for a moment, that I'm not responsible for all my downfalls. I'll forever be grateful for this song for that reason. Here's to a better future, and a hopeful one at that.

Tremble for yourself, my man, You know that you have seen this all before Tremble little lion man, You'll never settle any of your scores Your grace is wasted in your face, Your boldness stands alone among the wreck Now learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck But it was not your fault but mine And it was your heart on the line I really fucked it up this time Didn't I, my dear? This song has and continues to get me through the hardest parts of my life. I'm young, I know my parents think my problems are small, but to me their huge- But even when I'm crying my eyes out and I feel hopeless, I plug in an earbud and just listen to this and it gives me something. I don't know what, but perhaps it's hope, a strength that I don't have any other time. It makes me think that even if life sucks right now, even if I feel like I'm alone in a vast sea- One day, if I just keep a strong smile and never stop rowing I'll find an Island. When I do it'll be where I belong, and I'll be happier than I've ever been here. One day, when I have kids, I wanna sing them this song and tell them about how I felt so that one day when they go through the same thing they'll know they're not alone- And they'll know that I'm here for them and love them. That's all I could ever ask for.

[In an interview, Mumford & Sons singer Marcus Mumford stated that the inspiration for “Little Lion Man” came from “a very personal story, so I won’t elaborate upon too much. Suffice to say, it was a situation in my life I wasn’t very happy with or proud of.” The narrator is Mumford himself, perhaps with the experience of time, and is chastising his past self and behaviors, which he now considers reprehensible. The self-loathing is evident through the repetition of “weep,” as to highlight that he may have been trying to evoke pity, but was only showing weakness. The almost mocking tone that “you’ll never be what is in your heart/weep little lion man” serves a contrasting image. The lion, traditionally in literature representative of pride, honor, strength, and wisdom (examples include Aslan in C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia, The Cowardly Lion in Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, and Simba [in a role similar to Prince Hamlet in Shakespeare’s Hamlet] in Thomas Disch’s The Lion King) is sharply juxtaposed and surrounded by the words “little man.” This powerful jeer strikes a raw nerve, that Mumford considered himself strong, but in fact was truly weak, and that his status as a lion was only a sleek veneer of a man of diminutive character. Not only does Mumford criticize his weakness, but also his cerebral nature- “take all the courage you have left/wasted on fixing all the problems/that you made in your own head”- while he should have been confronting the basic nature of his faults, he was too busy thinking about them. In many ways, this is in the tradition of the character of Prince Hamlet, which is downplayed in The Lion King, but whose indecisiveness is a key factor in Shakespeare’s original play.] But it was not your fault but mine And it was your heart on the line I really fucked it up this time Didn’t I, my dear? [It is difficult whether to tell if this is the narrator, or Mumford in the past, speaking, but regardless a catharsis is occurring (or has occurred) in which he realizes/has realized the error in his ways. Although his behavior has been the death knell of his relationship, this very realization is the first step in altering his character, and consequently his future.] Tremble for yourself, my man You know that you have seen this all before Tremble little lion man You’ll never settle any of your scores Your grace is wasted in your face Your boldness stands alone among the wreck Learn from your mother Or else spend your days biting your own neck But it was not your fault but mine And it was your heart on the line I really fucked it up this time Didn’t I, my dear? [The narrator is imploring Mumford to change, once again. “You know that you have seen this all before” indicates that this is a repetition of events, and as long as he does not change, he will “never settle any of your scores.” The narrator is not proud of his past, and that his “grace is wasted in your face,” which was used for deception (perhaps even self-deception). The personification that “your boldness stands” is powerful because of the strong action verb chosen; his relationship has entirely broken down, but he still entertains this absurd sense of pride. “Learn from your mother/or else spend your days biting your own neck” may serve to advance the metaphor that compares Mumford to a weak lion; lionesses carry their young cubs by clamping down on their necks, indicative of both Mumford’s childish nature, and inability to reflect his upbringing with regard to his relationships.] bantamhoney liked this

"Now learn from your mother or you'll spend your days biting your own neck" I love my mother dearly, she has had the worst of traumas occur in her life. When I was a bit younger I was selfish, and blamed her for everything that went wrong, including what's wrong with me. Now she's near 60 and her injuries from abusive relationships are really taking a toll on her. I want to cry everytime I see her hurt because it hurts me. And when shes gone its gonna be the hardest time of my life. But I know all she wants is for us kids of hers to be happy. I'll always love you mama. I'll do everything to keep you safe.
