Islay Ferry from Kennacraig to Port Ellen (Day Trip to Islay)

Day Trip to Islay: Taking the car onto the Islay Ferry from Kennacraig to Port Ellen on Islay with CalMac Ferries (Caledonian MacBrayne). We started this journey from nearby in Tarbert with an early crossing to Islay on a day trip with a later return from Port Ellen to Kennacraig. We also toured the island by car, including Bowmore, Laphroaig, and Ardbeg Distillery with a personal visit to my plot of land as a Friend of Laphroaig whisky distillery. Obviously drank lots of peat-smoked scotch whisky throughout.

My pals and I from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway crossed this way to Islay in 1988. We'd taken a taxi the night before from Oban where we'd enjoyed a three-day cruise aboard the "Columba" to Colonsay, around Mull and Iona, and to Tiree and Coll (cabin and full board for just £70!!!) in her last year with CalMac before she was refitted as the exclusive "Highland Princess". We slept aboard the ferry at Kennacraig before the early morning crossing to Port Ellen. We visited Bowmore distillery, and spent the night in the Marine Hotel overlooking Loch Indaal, where there was a fabulous sunset over the Bruichladdich Distillery on the far shore of the loch. The next day we celebrated my fortieth birthday at the Port Askaig Hotel as we waited for our ferry back to the mainland. The second week of our trip was spent aboard the "Puffer" VIC 32 cruising out of Ardrishaig around the sea lochs and islands of the Firth of Clyde. The next year we spent a week at Kinuachdracht on the northern tip of Jura. Unforgettable memories of a magical part of the world (except for the midges!).
