@@MemorySeekers I hope you are able to return at some point. You are right about them living there when they were little but one of them bought houses there when they became famous (might have been Maurice). There is a Bee Gees statue in Douglas which looks pretty cool. Looking forward to your next upload.

yes it was early life for bee gees. but robin Gibb had a house here. not sure if his wife still has it. I saw robin at the villa marina doing a small concert for a children's charity. he did a lovely concert but looked very thin. thinner than normal. I commented to my daughter after the concert saying he didn't look well. he died about 12months after. had the Manx flag on the back of his coffin. we now got a statue on Douglas seafront of the bee gees. looks good.

I've heard many fascinating stories about the Isle of Man all my life, but this is the first time I've seen modern pictures (my only reference was a book about the island, dated 1896) What a magic place - breathtaking to say the least. My great grandmother (Elizabeth Jane Cubbon) was born here, and her family lived in the Cubbon House for many, many generations. I only wish I could visit! Thank you for posting this video. After watching this, I am wondering why she emigrated to Ontario, Canada!

Hello Jane what a lovely story about your grandmother. So glad that our trip to the isle has given you some insight into how it is today and what a wonderful place it is.
@chryseass.51433 жыл бұрын
Jane, your great grandmother would feel right at home even today - the surname of Cubbon is one that is well known on the Island as belonging to one of the old Manx families.
@janeblake69153 жыл бұрын
@@MemorySeekers Thank you very much for your message. I delved a bit deeper into my family history, (through Ancestry), and discovered why Elizabeth never returned to the Island she loved. She had eloped at the age of 16 and was told she "had disgraced the family" and was told never to return to the island by her father. Poor girl, and very sad for everyone, isn't it? She did keep in contact with her mother though, who came to see her after the father's death.

Absolutely charming. Have seen the videos more critical of the current neglect, and the complaints are valid. With any place, we must take the positives and negatives and hope the net is in the black. Seems overall that is the case with the IOM, but I can also understand why one would criticize the lack of care from municipalities, who inherited such natural and historical grandeur. Fascinated with the Isle before I knew of the TT- but admit that it is a bucket list event- the location makes it.

My favourite places were the glens; Summerhill, Groudle, Glen May, Glen Helen, Glen Falcon etc. Always walked the Marine Drive from Douglas to Port Soderick, don't think it's open now. Nice walk in the isle of man. I enjoyed it very much. Your walks are always amazing and historical. Have you ever been to fyvie castle in Scotland? I heard it's a great place to visit. Can't wait to see more soon. 😃

No we have not been, this was our first ever trip to Scotland. I have marked it on the map for when we return.

You might want to walk up Peel Hill to look at the Castle.... Tynwald Hill is the Parliament in St Johns. Thanks for the Video though I am adding it into a Blog post ;)

Very pretty tour - it's one place I know just about zero about, but my ears pricked up when you mentioned FREE PARKING!! I'd really like to know about what makes the IoM unique and how it differs from England? Do they have VAT, did you notice any differences, are the holidays the same, when are the TT Races (in case you want to avoid them) - is it closer to the Channel Islands in governance (?) than England - how do you get there, and how does it compare in size, to say Jersey or the Isle of White! Do they have their own currency? (Sorry, as I said I know Nothing!) I do like the idea of all the heritage rail you took, that looks like a lovely way to explore and the coastline looks very unspoilt and quite dramatic - and was the ice cream good? I remember years ago being heartbroken when I went to Jersey & there wasn't a genuine Jersey ice cream to be had - I hope that's no longer true! (Just wonder if the short-horn pigs are related to the Aussie Drop Bears? 😉) You guys do a great job - I know you go all over, but the British Isles really is blessed with some amazing destinations.

For VAT they are the same as UK but not part of UK , holidays the same as far as I am aware. TT is usually around the end of May you need to google for exact dates, The Island is a self-governing British Crown Dependency so just like Jersey but Isle of Wight is part of the UK not the same at all. They have the Manx Pound that is the same as sterling but cannot be spent off the isle. You can use GBP in IOM fine though. You can fly from a number of airports in the UK or take a ferry. ☺

Peel "The Sunset City" without a sunset? Other than that, a delightful tour of the Isle. We've just returned from our second two week trip and it won't be our last!

He was talking about having a picnic on Tynwald Hill, WRONG!! It is Peel Hill NOT TYNWALD HILL , which is at St Johns

Whenever I travel by bus from Cregneash to Calf Sound (on my almost-annual trips to the Island: I pray I will be able to go again someday!), I see a weird flying saucer-like structure on a hill before I reach the Sound. Never known what it is.

It's to do with air craft, it's like a check in point for planes flying over us. Known locally as the spaceship I think most of us grew up believing it was a real spaceship!
