I've resisted watching this since my order hasn't arrived yet and I prefer to read the rules and then see you put the game into action, but it looked too good to pass up...now the wait is even more agonizing! It made me grin to see the fish from A&B, love when games share a universe as it makes for interesting table banter.

As I understand it, Jen is required to move her ship as the very fist thing she does, so she can't have bought the Navigator's Guild to increase her speed before moving (9:20)

Lots of good decisions in this game.

Seems like Ryan is slowly settling in mechanics. The character stuff from Ancient World and Above and Below and the building queue from City of Iron and the aforementioned are pretty dominant in his designs. Not that I criticize him for it.

A good gateway game!

Would've liked to see round tokens for the goods (like fish), as in Above & Below. Or squares/rectangles with rounded edges. I know, I know, prototype. Edit: Dur, I just noticed the goods tokens are round on the KS page. There ya go. Edit2: I obviously haven't played the game, but 4 tiles feels like it might get a bit tight. I'd love to see something like a +3 map tiles/+2 player tiles expansion mentioned at some point, bringing it up to the size of the Empires of the Void map.

I can't see in the rulebook where it says you discard pirates and sea serpents after a successful attack. The only mention of discarding your pirates or serpents is when you fail to roll high enough and choose to retreat, then you choose one of your pirates or serpents involved in the fight and discard that one, and take the rest back to your ship. I don't know if this is an error, or if the rulebook I'm looking at isn't the same as Rahdo's. (28:35)

+Zero Bad Ideas i've got a physical printout of the rules that came with my prototype, and there's a callout section indicating that whenever used for a successful attack, you lose your pirates/serpents. i just checked the rules on the kickstarter page, and that callout box is missing (that section of the page is blank). i assume there's a goof with the rules online, because i did confirm with the designer before filming that you do lose all you used after a successful fight (I had to ask because the rules talked about it for taking towns, but not for winning event cards)

+rahdo Ah, I see. I did think it seemed a bit overpowered if you could just keep using pirates and serpents and never have to hire more so long as you never lose.

Rahdo, have you heard about the game Castaways? Take a look at this excellent playthrough: (I've started it in progress to give you a feel for gameplay instead of starting with an explanation of the rules.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aV6paouamNx2i7cm42s You might want to check out this game b/c it looks FASCINATING! I am totally engrossed in what is going to happen!! I'm going to ask my game club if they will get a copy of Castaways!

Any game that takes 30+ minutes to explain is bad. Trying to get friends to play games like these is a drag. They lose interest after 5 minutes.

Maybe you should find some boardgaming friends? It sounds like your friends just don't have the kind of attention span for more serious boardgaming, which is fine and all. Maybe they prefer more lighter fare, like Munchkin/Flux, any of the 'classic' family associated games (Life, Monopoly, etc), or any number of party games. Frankly, many of those games seem like a waste of time to me. There isn't much to them, and more often than not, depend on randomness rather than skilled play. Many of us seek more depth to a game, to our choices in a game, and that takes something with more meat on the bones. I've seen good and bad games that take ten minutes to explain, and good/bad games that take 25-30 minutes to explain. But ultimately, it is all in what you want to get out of the gaming experience and what satisfies that itch. So rather than say this is bad due to the time it takes to teach, maybe seek out games that are more to your liking? Cause, clearly, this isn't it, not based on the quality of the game or the quality of the instruction, but based on your very specific limitation (game that takes 30+ minutes to teach... which, based on the video, I think this one could probably take less to actually teach, but he is actually showing a playthrough of the first several turns, not just trying to teach the rules).

You could explain this game in less than 30 minutes. If you haven't noticed, these videos are gameplay videos not exclusively explanatory/informational videos. Calling a game bad because you or your friends don't have the mental capacity to deal with it is just daft.
