Sir, huge respect for stressing how oscilloscope isolation from mains is not a good idea. Nobody else I've watched has explained it that way. Now I have to learn how to setup two channels on my oscilloscope to read potential difference. People can certainly get a false sense of safety when using isolation transformers. Thank you very much ❤

Dude, as an amateur electronics dabbler, I can't tell you how many videos I've watched trying to understand the issue of isolation transformers and grounds -- whether to ground the IT itself, whether to ground the case, whether to have a 3-prong outlet coming out of the secondary, etc. At last someone has spelled it out clearly. Excellent, excellent, excellent explanation. Thank you VERY much.

Hi, you are an excellent teacher! I've been watching a lot of videos on this topic, but your explanation is, by far, the best!. Thanks a lot

First time I’ve learned about the use of the ‘Invert’ switch on the scope, or using an isolation transformer at the device itself to take a measurement. I wonder, though, about the impedance of the isolation transformer affecting the accuracy of the measurement, and again useful only for measuring AC voltages, which is what the scope is most used.

One time, me and a friend were playing electric guitars. He was plugged in to one side of the room, me into the other. We came in to contact in the middle of the room, and pow! We were shocked!

Great video bob. I have a question about transformers. Why do lager transformers operate at lower frequencies and smaller transformers operate at higher frequencies? Why does size play a part. I never fully understood why.

This is from Quora website for your information: Perhaps you are familiar with the universal transformer EMF equation: E=4.44BmaxAfN E is the rms emf (induced voltage) of any transformer winding. For a primary winding this must be equal to the rms applied (supply) voltage. Bmax is the max flux density reached during each half cycle (tesla) A is the cross sectional area of the iron core on which the winding is wound (m^2) f is the supply frequency (Hz) N is the number of turns of the winding So all other things being equal, an increase in f means that you can correspondingly reduce the core cross sectional area “A”, which reduces core size and weight. And since the turns go around the core, a smaller core cross section means shorter turns, i.e. less copper in the windings. Less iron and less copper makes for a smaller, lighter transformer. If you aren’t familiar with the transformer emf equation, I suggest you read about it, e.g., in the Wikipedia article titled “Transformer”

Great explanations, but what’s the issue with using an isolation transferring on your scope power input even if the case of the transformer is grounded. Agreed it’s not designed you be used that way and there may be noise pickup or something but there’s no chance of electrocution without a fault inside the transformer. The differential probe trick is a great idea though! Thanks

What about welding machine.. is it possible to eliminate interference or voltage spikes on home electric network? Lights are flashing when welding with short circuit mig machine..

So what if the isolation transformers primary side is grounded? Can't if I touch the hot in the secondary side(which is not grounded), electricity flow through the primary side, since it was grounded?
