Love these Garage band geniuses. You sir are a badass. I’ve never shared this story publicly, but a couple years ago, literally maybe a week or two before The Weeknd went on his Legend Of the Fall tour, someone on his team contacted the company I work for to show up at a recording studio and rehearse with him and his band for a few days. While I’d prefer not say what I do for a living, I will say that it required me to learn all of his songs in a day or two to be ready for rehearsals. Because I’m a big time Howard Stern fan, I’m not super literate on current music, to be honest I’d never even heard of “The Weeknd” at the time. So I went from never hearing of him, to learning every potential song he may do on tour in a mere 48 hours. Day of, I get to the studio, expecting a massive posse and crew (as typically in my line of work, the larger the celebrity, the bigger the production), but it was just his band, tour manager, guitar/drum tech, sound engineer, two security guards, Abel, and little old me. They set my station up on the stage right next to him as he rehearsed all of his songs and it’s perhaps the most surreal experience I’ve ever had in my life. It was like my own private concert lol. I’ve worked for many big time talent throughout my career but I remember reiterating in my head as he sang “he’s the real deal.” Truly stunning vocals live without those electronic synthesizer gizmos to enhance how he sounds. He was super personable, asked me what I thought about the set list, cracked jokes with the band, absolutely 0 ego, and I’ve worked with singers who have a fraction of the talent but 10 times the diva attitude. Anyways to wrap things up, rehearsals went great, and unfortunately I never heard back from his team, but it’s a gig I’ll remember for the rest of my days.
