If the police don’t know where the child is but have the parents right in front of them, they know the child wasn’t abducted so right there it’s not an amber alert situation. The police can’t just pull a car over, demand to see children and immediately issue an amber alert if the parents don’t comply. They have to have evidence of an abduction. People are already desensitized to amber alerts because of how often they go out. They don’t want to risk loosening up the criteria and then having people barely paying attention anymore when there’s information specific enough that it really can save a child’s life.
