Salah is Palestinian and Spanish. Until six months ago he lived a quiet life in Gaza, his hometown. The war, which broke out on October 7, turned his life upside down. It forced him and his family to leave everything and embark on a journey, for now, with no return.
However, it is not the first time that the 74-year-old has left Palestine. In fact, the conflict has marked his entire life. He was first born as a refugee and stateless person, then became trapped in a war outside his country, the difficulties of emigrating and achieving a dignified life in Spain, and the desire to return to his land.
For several days we accompanied Salah in Pilas, a town in Aljarafe in Seville with 14,000 inhabitants. There, he, along with his wife, children and grandchildren, tries to adapt to a new life full of uncertainty. Although his wish is to return to Gaza one day. “It always resurfaces. Gaza is like the phoenix,” he says.
He discovers his story in this new video from In First Person, a digital video format.
