Ambassador Chas W. Freeman, Jr. is a senior fellow at Brown University's Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense, ambassador to Saudi Arabia (during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm), acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, and Chargé d'affaires at both Bangkok and Beijing. He began his diplomatic career in India but specialized in Chinese affairs. (He was the principal American interpreter during President Nixon's visit to Beijing in 1972.)
Ambassador Freeman is a much sought-after public speaker (see chasfreeman.net) and the author of several well-received books on statecraft and diplomacy. His most recent book, "America's Continuing Misadventures in the Middle East" was published in May 2016. "Interesting Times: China, America, and the Shifting Balance of Prestige," appeared in March 2013. "America’s Misadventures in the Middle East" came out in 2010, as did the most recent revision of "The Diplomat’s Dictionary," the companion volume to "Arts of Power: Statecraft and Diplomacy." He was the editor of the Encyclopedia Britannica entry on "diplomacy."
Freeman is a former U.S. assistant secretary of defense, ambassador to Saudi Arabia, principal deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs, chargé d’affaires a.i. at Bangkok and Beijing, acting U.S. commissioner for refugee affairs and director of program coordination and development at the U.S. Information Agency. He was the principal American interpreter during the late President Nixon’s 1972 opening of U.S. relations with China.
Chas Freeman studied at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and Taiwan and earned an A.B. magna cum laude from Yale University as well as a J.D. from the Harvard Law School. He chairs Projects International, Inc., a Washington-based firm that for more than three decades has helped its American and foreign clients create ventures across borders, facilitating their establishment of new businesses through the design, negotiation, capitalization, and implementation of greenfield investments, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, franchises, one-off transactions, sales and agencies in other countries.

“I want my legs back,” the girl cried in Arabic. “I want my legs back.” You can’t have your legs back, little girl. They have been eaten by a hungry machine who needs them for fuel to power its gears. The machine needs your legs to keep the sky raining bombs and to make its death robots fly. Your legs power the bulldozers digging mass graves and the tanks blowing holes in the hospitals. A glorious kingdom is held together by the amputated limbs of children. A pentagon-shaped castle is built from the bones of the amputated limbs of children. Wall Street werewolves and bank boys dine on the amputated limbs of children. Movie stars treat their wrinkles with creams made from the amputated limbs of children. Suburban families prop up their smiles with the amputated limbs of children. The news man lies and in his eyes you see the amputated limbs of children. The podium man smirks and between his teeth are the amputated limbs of children. And the little girl cries, and the news man ignores her, and the podium man smirks at her, and the bank boy bites her, and the machine rolls on, limbs fed into its furnace with pitchforks, crushing houses and blackening the sky, poisoning the oceans and bloodying the earth, while the air fills with the crying of children, for limbs that will never come back, for homes that will never come back, for mothers that will never come back, for childhoods that will never come back, for brightness that will never come back, for innocence that will never come back, for dreams that will never come back, for joy that will never come back. And we are here, eating cheesy meatcarbs and watching funny haw-haws and gossiping and prattling and wishing we looked better and trying not to think about all the tiny arms and legs we see covering the earth whenever we step outside. twitter.com/afshinrattansi/status/1768566917055295873 www.caitlinjohnst.one/p/the-amputated-limbs-of-children

@@literatious308 Nima's a propagandist, even if you and I agree with most of what he says. Pascal is someone with a heart for human beings on all sides. If you think I'm being harsh (in this echo chamber), a Nima headline might read something like "Ukraine army already crushed/destroyed" while Pascal might write "US Neocons pushing Ukraine towards devastation". Not exact words, of course. Maybe Nima will become a balanced, bighearted adult like Pascal eventually. Also, it's sad not to critically question the opinions _any_ of the revolving table of guests. Nowadays, it seems that no-one dares: if otherwise, the guest wouldn't agree to keep appearing or wouldn't be invited. That's why I say we desperately need adults (with respect an essential aspect, of course).

The whole last section of the conversation about Israel is the exact same for the USA. Let Chas listen it back and replace the word Israel for USA and replace genocide for violent oppression. The world looks at the USA now as the dictatorial bully that it is and sees the flag as a symbol of violent suppression of opinions and cultures and of anything that the USA destroyed and doesn't want. So the USA is looked at more negatively by the world every day, because of its wrong, violent, supopressive actions everywhere. And also the USA is divided internally and the people abhor its politicians, just like in Israel.

Brilliant analysis of current events by former Ambassador Chas Freeman!!! He has a great depth of understanding about international affairs on a multitude of levels. It is always highly enlightening to listen to his responses to your thought provoking questions. I think he has accurately summed up the likely outcome of Israel’s current actions. They are in the process of alienating their country from the world at large. This will not at all have a positive outcome for Israel, and certainly a horrifying outcome for the civilian population of Palestine! The nightmare that Netanyahu, his government and military have inflicted upon the Palestinians is nothing short of genocide, and is indefensible as a response to the October 7th attack on Israel. Thank you for inviting Chas Freeman back on as a guest. After listening to his wisdom and insights, I think we all have a better understanding of the complexities of what is unfolding in Gaza and the West Bank. I think he was very much on point, when he suggested the State of Israel is committing suicide, by their deplorable and indefensible war crimes being perpetrated on the civilian population of Palestine. As an American of the Jewish faith, I am outraged that the U. S. government is using our tax dollars to help Israel commit this mass extermination campaign, and further outraged by the inhumane and cruel attitude Israel has exhibited in carrying out this horrific genocide! You are doing a great job keeping us all well informed ,Nima , please keep up the good work!

China is no longer the largest trading partner of the U.S., but I guess that is irrelevant because China is indeed the largest trading partner in the world, and the world beyond the U.S. matters greatly. Amb. Freeman corrected to a degree the ridiculous remark he made about the Uighurs a few days ago. That was a good thing to do, so I applaud him. However, it does not matter what Chas Freeman thinks about the Russian political system because the Russians overwhelmingly support it, and that is what matters. The weakness in the Russian political and economic system was the result of western vultures in the 1990s. I believe that Russia is much healthier and more competent politically and economically than the U.S. Just my opinion.

This is all we - Ukrainians need to know about this proxy NATO vs Russia war: “Being an enemy of America is dangerous, being a friend of America is fatal.” - Henry Kissinger *** >>>I guess it was the 12th or 13th time to Kiev, and I was supposed to announce that there was another billion-dollar loan guarantee. I got a commitment from Poroshenko and from Yatsenyuk that they would take action against a state prosecutor, and they didn’t. “So as they were walking out to the press conference, I said, nah, we aren’t going to give you the billion dollars. They said you have no authority, you are not the President. I said call him. I’m telling you, you are not getting the billion dollars. “You are not getting the billion; I am leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you are not getting the money. “Well, son of a bitch, he got fired.>If you put aside the immense human suffering and look at Ukraine’s war through the cold lens of international power politics, a clear picture emerges: the West is having a good war against Russia. All NATO has to do is send Kyiv munitions, equipment and money, which, as any general knows, is the c h e a p e s t way to wage war. (...) The lives are being given by the Ukrainians. They’re defending their nation but also, inadvertently, helping decide the Cold War. For 70 years, NATO deterred a Moscow attack westwards. The Russians eventually invaded, last February, what they assumed would be a conquerable target on their south-western border. The war that NATO long prepared for is finally being fought.

Well done. if you’re a Ukrainian ask your stupid president why he fall on the NATO trap How would Russia let the arch enemy come to its border. Who provided most weapons? Why? To get some Russian military and weapons used. Why did you not stay neutral as advised. They used UKRAINE WAR to distract and get ready for the war in ISRAEL. The US and western leaders and plenty of citizens are ZIONISTS. Since that war started did they bother too much about Ukraine. Don’t know if you believe in RELIGION. I am a Muslim from UK I believe in the QURAN and it’s happening, started 1947 now finally want all the land, Gaza first because HAMAS is there, then West Bank. Did you see Netanyahus map he wants to achieve. Don’t know if they CAN take GAZA But the results is written what will happen at the end. Why have they raised ( red hiefers) all that time. A certain description has to match which they think they finally got. They want to build the third temple. They are waiting for the MESSIAH. The ZIONISTS are a mixture of Christians and Jews. The war in ISRAEL is going to become a RELIGIOUS WAR. Also people are realising the TRUTH and sensible citizens from all religions are REVERTING to ISLAM fast all over the world. The eloquence of Chas Freeman is a sad gift that he gives. It cannot help but bring to mind how much the statesmen this country was had are gone. They have been succeeded by men without honor or virtue. Men who we at once looked for making America better are not what we now have. Accomplices to genocide. Supporters of starvation of women and their children . Older men who are shot in bed or standing in food lines. Ambassador Freeman does point to the future we must yearn to revive. Because, if we fail, the dystopian vision George Orwell gave us in his 1984, that will be our future for our children.

Vote Jill Stein 2024. The only anti-war candidate and a sane voice in this election cycle! She has great ballot access. A serious peace candidate.

His final words, "in my own country could turn into a general antiwar movement," recalls to me that the original Persian Gulf War was said at the time to have "cured the Vietnam Syndrome" that limited the use of war as foreign policy. We could now see a return of what we once called Vietnam Syndrome. That would be a good thing.

I really wish you are right. I have been living through the ups and downs on this planet since 1949. We had some bad experiences here and there, but they were mostly localized and we understood a countermeasure to fix or manage a problem. Lately, the problems we face are more complex, not only on the foreign diplomacy sphere, but now they cross many distinct fields. Greenhouse gases, economic, Washington gridlock. Jets costing $100 million each so they are stealthy. We are backing a Genocidal Israel making nuclear threats on Iran. When Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th, I had taken time off from work. When I read the history of the United Kingdom invasion of Palestine I was stunned how I was uninformed for decades of the real story. I essentially became aware the Professor Ralph Wild was on target with his International Court of Justice account of the Palestine steal by corruption of international law. We were lied to for decades. I gradually learned the mechanisms of how we were deluded by mainstream media. Was CIA involved or not. A key concept of. The Orwell Book 1984 centered on video, And twisting word meaning. Which is now richly present.

Brilliant analogy by Ambassador Freeman on Blinken's black thumb! Mixing it with Josep Borrell's earlier statement on garden vs jungle, one would be inclined to come to the conclusion that 'the garden is dying, and the jungle is thriving'...

Chas Freeman for president. Wishful thinking, but the gulf between his intellect and moral convictions and those of Biden and Trump could not be more stark.
