Ernest Bevin, UK Foreign Secretary at the time the Palestine issue was passed to the UN (ie before the State of Israel existed) said: “This conflict is incapable of resolution. The first and overwhelming priority of the Jews is to have a Jewish state. The first and overwhelming priority of the Arabs is that the Jews should not have a Jewish state.” Sadly, it has continued so to this day. If the Palestinians insist on the right of return, not only for those displaced in 1948 but for all their descendants as well, thereby denying the existence of Israel as the world’s only Jewish state, there will never be resolution of this problem.

The Palestinians suffered a major injustice when half of their country was allocated by the UN to be a Jewish state. The current Israeli government is truly awful. The likes of Smotrich and Ben Gvir are odious and loathsome, and Netanyahu is not far behind. BUT, to think that the answer is to turn the clock back to pre-1948 is fanciful … and shows the lack of realistic expectation which has characterised the Palestinian’s last 75 years.

The tragedy is that the Palestinians could have had 80% of Mandate Palestine (1937 Peel Commission) and then 50% (1947 UN Partition … and their 50% excluded the Negev desert). Now, they'll be lucky to get 20%. The Palestinians go on and on about the Nakba as though they were the only people in history to suffer an injustice. At the same time as the Nakba, 700,000 Jews were forced to flee the Arab countries of the Middle East ... since then, no dedicated refugee agency for the Jewish refugees; not one Jewish refugee camp; not one $ of UN aid to the Jewish refugees; and not one claim by Jewish refugees for right of return to their countries of origin. Instead of wallowing in victimhood, they got on with their lives. If the Palestinians had only done the same, what a wonderful and thriving state they could have had by now … and may yet have, if they get realistic in their expectations.
