I suspect that the origins of the debka pre-date BOTH the Jewish presence (c.10th Cen. BCE) in Eretz Yisrael/Falastin, AND the Arabization of the Fertile Crescent (beginning with the Muslim Conquest in the 7th Century CE). If we really want to get technical, I don't think any Middle East country or community can claim "ownership" of the debka. That being said, both sides of the debate should be sensitive to the feelings of Palestinians and of Mizrahi Jews, who were BOTH ethnically cleansed.

The choreographer of this dance is Moshe Eskayo, an Israeli. He used to lead dance sessions in New York and has choreographed many Israeli dances, among which other debkas. Israeli dance is influenced by the dance Eskayo is particularly good at incorporating Arabic and Yemenite elements of dance into his choreography. His are among the most interesting, intricate and beautiful Israeli dances that I know of.

Die ethnische oder religiöse Zugehörigkeit spielt dabei keine Rolle. Let's dance together for a better world ! Tanz der Kulturen am 15. 9. 2007 in Berlin-Kreuzberg !

The Israeli Choreographer don't change the name; this music-piece is called "Debka Oud". But the steps, figures and movements=the Dance is made by an Israeli Choreographer named Moshe Eskayo. Arabs and Jews are Brothers because of their Tribe-Father Abraham

1) At the risk of sounding sexist: I think Debka expresses a kind controlled physical power that makes it more appropriate for male dancers. 2) It's great the way the kids in the audience get into the music!
@Hageulah13 жыл бұрын
@gilboagilboa . The Israeli Debka is choreographed for women and men and danced by Dancers all around the whole world, it doesn't matter the age, religion, sex, ethnic roots....

It's an Israeli Dance called "Debka Oud", choreographed by an Israeli Choreographer to an arabic music-piece! By the way Israel is an ancient oriental country described in the Holy Bible and today there are living all kinds of Jews, which are returned back out from the Diaspora....Jews form Irak, Turkey, Marokko, Algerien, Yemen, India, Europe and USA and the Sabres born in the young state of Israel founded (re-founded) in 1948.....Mirjam

I wrote Israeli Dance Debka Oud, because the music might be arabic, but the Dance is an Israeli Choreography and not an arabic Dance! The Israeli Dances are new and modern Folklore, choreographed by popular Israeli jewish Choreographers, especially by Mizrahi.

The Hebrews/Jews never have stolen Land. Israel is the Holy Land, where they have lived since more than 3000 years. It doesn't matter if Debka is an Arabic Word. Israel is a Country at the Mediterran Sea, where the Mizrahi Jews keep up their ancient Culture. Music and Dances don't belong only to one people. Everybody are free to sing and dance to the Music, who touch his Soul and make the movements, that express his Feelings! We are Dancers not Politicians. Mirjam

But the Debka-Dance don't belong only to the arabs; the Jews - especially the Mizrahi - dance it too!

"Hebrew and Arabic words that are the same in Hebrew and Arabic (yom, arba, beyt) all come from Aramaic. So, it's not Hebrew" There are HUNDREDS if not more words common to both Hebrew and Arabic, they are from the same semetic family.

Huh? Half of Israeli Jews have roots in the Arab and Muslim world. The number of Americans living in Israel is quite small. By now, most Ashkenazim--other than recent immigrants from the former USSR--have been in Israel at least 2 generations and are more at home with hummous & falafel than golumpki & borsht. And Jews from Arab countries were not "influenced" by Arab culture, they were PART OF that culture. This is not to say that debka is "Israeli" to correct your "facts."

u can dance dabke when ever u want but u cant call it isreali cuz its not n there is nothing such a thing as an israeli dabke!! it dosent matter if its not only known in the arabic communities cuz its arabic , from the arabic culture. peace

The Jews have a very old and rich Culture: Religion, Songs, Music, Dances, Food...This Folk exist since a very long Time in the Holy Land. You can read it in the Torah/Holy Bible - even the Moslems write it in their Koran. The Romans gave this Land the new name "Palaestina"! The wonderful Hebrew Songs of the Jews are unique and so are their Israeli Dances. Please stop posting such stupid and hostile Comments! Mirjam Hageulah

The Jews live in this region called Kanaan, Israel, Judäa, Palaestina for more than 3000 years. There don't exist Palästina and Palaestinians since Israel was founded in 1948. This Region belongs a long time to the Osman Empire and at least under the British Rule. Palaestinians are Arabs. The Jews are origin Mizrahi like the Arabs, before distroying into the Diaspora.

they didnt steal some culture ( i wont even get into the land part). Israel is a middle eastern country, and Jews are semites and at least half of Israelis are from Arab countries. Don't you think its part of their own culture too?

Excuse me but Debka is not "Palestinian" (FAKEstinian) it's a dance from the Geographical AREA known as the Levant which includes Lebanon, Israel, Syria and Jordan. We have 1.5 million Israeli Arabs who dance this Debka so yes it can be called Israeli. Especially the Israeli Arab Druze in Israel who dance it a lot.

Mirjam
