The Maldives is a Muslim country. You don't actually see the "real" Maldives when you go there. Land at the airport at the capital Malé on the largest island, a short bus ride to the sea port or seaplane port follows, then a boat or air transfer to the tiny island atoll you'll be staying on. English speaking staff hired from India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia etc... are in most of the customer facing roles at the resorts and make up nearly 60% of the tourist sector workforce. They get a visa to work on that specific island, and stay on it in staff quarters. Most of the Maldivian workers live on larger local non-resort islands, arrive by boat daily, and don't interact with guests. The Maldives is a very conservative very Islamic country - the stunning all-inclussive resorts serving limitless alcohol are the cash cow taking US dollars to fund it all. You aren't really visiting a country when you go to the Maldives, just a small western enclave staffed by foreigners.
