When I was a teenager my grandfather told me that if the aid money they’ve received since 1948 had been used as it was intended, every family in the West Bank and Gaza would live in a villa and have a Mercedes parked in the driveway. This was in the late 80’s/early 90’s. I didn’t quite understand that then but I certainly do now. They could have built themselves a paradise on the Mediterranean but instead they used all the money and goodwill they’ve received to build their own version of Hell.

The living standard was surprising good, considering many were unemployed, and half of population children.... Last proof. Now these days of this terrible war Israel against Hamas inside Gaza... Rescue deliveries are flowing with over 200 trucks every day, but they are distributed unevenly... Many reports the deliveries are stolen (by whom? Hamas?) and sold on black markets... With people paying very high prices, at least 3x the usual.... Horrible. But what do we learn from this? People in Gaza do have money, lotsa of money. In cash or valuables, because banks are probably not working...

You should compare Gaza with Egypt and other similar GDP per capita countries. The chances of Google maps getting revenue in a high GDP per capita countries is much higher than in law GDP per capita countries. The GDP per capita of Egypt Jordan Syria Lebanon and Iraq all combined is less than 50% of the GDP per capita of Israel.

The Israeli Arabs have been living in a different society in which the leaders of the country, education, media, and the way of life are Western liberal, for all of their lives. In many ways they are as Israeli as the Jews. Most of them would choose to stay in Israel than living under Palestinian ruling. They are even different from the Muslims that migrated to Europe, because they were born in Israel proper and are not alienated from their country.

Israelis believe they have made "better use" of the land than their Palestinian Arabs counterparts, therefore Jews deserve the land. This is not how sovereignty works. Imperial Japan was famous for using this argument to justify the annexing/colonization of Okinawa/Taiwan/Manchuria/Korea/etc. This was almost universally condemned, and Imperial Japan is nothing more than two mushroom clouds over the ash heap of history. Even if Japan made greater crop yields/repealed some antiquated practices/provided industrial living conditions to these colonies, doesn't change the fact they were occupying land and people against their will.

This sounds like the kind of anti-Catholic bigotry indulged in by a few Protestants in Dublin in 1900, and in diminishingly isolated pockets of Northern Ireland today. Sometime between 1900 and 1920, my Protestant ancestors totally got over their notions of their "competence" and Catholic "backwardness". And nowadays, in Dublin, this historical memory is a shared source of amusement among Catholics and Protestants. I'm glad my colonial ancestors "went native", and I would recommend the Israelis do the same. It's never "the right time" to start, of course, but it started in my grandmother's case when someone taught her the words of a prayer in Gaelic .
