Gerusalemme d'oro.

What an unusual arrangement - and the dissonances and minor chords in second stanza - a relief when it switched at the end to major. A beautiful performance. I can't believe it took place during the pandemic, and there's a full audience without distancing?

Not that unusual. The minor chords and other touches in the second stanza were a nod to some Mizrahi/Middle Eastern flair. As for social distancing - note the date, this was in 2018.

I cried because the music was unusually strenuous. Possibly a lament for the Old City at a time when the battle raging on the outside seemed to have torn the inside apart. I immediately thought about my Birthright trip, when I stood at high noon on a rooftop adjacent to the intersection of the four quarters and heard both the Muslim call to prayer and the tolling of the bells. Last I heard, before Covid, the Birthright trips in the Old City were limited to a quick in-and-out at the Kotel. And that was in 2018 or before. As for the performance, I loved when the strings decided to stick to their C-minor terra familiaris when making their re-entrance despite Lahav’s “arranger-privileged” move to E-flat minor, and how the music becomes more urgent even when they succeed to bring the key back. Their repeated upward striving in the last chorus outdoes anything Shemer could do with only one voice.
