Wow, what a great in depth conversation! I kinda like the PS1 sound profile as well. The sound is what I described as "punchy" and "intense". It has a lot more "umpf" than orchestral arranged tracks. I will defiantly will tune in for more.
@purpleschala Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Dustin, really appreciate your listening to us! And yes, I know what you mean regarding synthesized samples packing more of a sonic punch because the attack is so fast and the compression normalizes everything to a high volume--I personally prefer the original PS1 soundfont to some of the rearranged tracks played by live orchestra in Remake, even as a classical musician myself, because it just seems to suit the aesthetic of the OG so perfectly, though that's a pretty polarizing issue in the fandom. Andrew and will be having many lively debates about that in subsequent episodes lol!!

Excited for this podcast all about the FF7 OST with you both. ❤ I was in high school when the game came out and do love the game, and I’m excited to learn from much greater musical minds, about this beloved soundtrack. My 2 cents’ worth: please feel free to take detours to wherever! My fav version of the prelude is FF4’s. So wonderful, I love the instrument set Uematsu has in that OST, and what he achieved there. But FF7 is great stuff: Cid’s theme, Cait Sith’s theme, Don of the Slums, Yuffie’s theme, Aerith’s theme, Tifa’s theme, Main theme, on and on. I will be glued to this podcast. 🎉 EDIT: holy cow, just heard where you show us Ruby the rendition at the end of FF8. I think I will have to update my answer!! I never actually finished that game, and I had never heard that awesome version. Sick!!!! Edit 2: oh man, Hamaguchi…oh right, he was who did the piano collections arrangements! I love him! I didn’t know he was part of the OST itself. I love his work also for like Shirobako (anime). Thank you for reading my rambly comment and thank you both for doing this.

One extra technical consideration of the tracker format vs. pre-recorded waves in PS1 is that the waves would have taken up a lot more storage space - like 4 MB-ish per minute of music. Those games were already 3-4 discs because of the FMVs, and using waves would have blown out the size of the game to at least another 2 discs. The tracker format persisted into the PS2 era and I think it's one of the reasons that those games could fit onto one disc.
@purpleschala Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, thanks for adding that info!! WAV files are massive, and as this 1080p, 30fps one hour podcast video ended up being a staggering 8G I can only imagine an hour's worth of mp4 cutscenes on a DVD would have taken up half the disc lol, unless Sony had their own proprietary format--would you happen to know more about that? Love that the PS2 still used real time synthesized sound and had so much of the PS1 hardware, thanks for mentioning that, and thanks so much for listening!!!!
@IsrafelCello Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for putting that in perspective!! These days, I'm extremely grateful for the massive amount of storage space for present day console, so much of my work comes from recording for these games, and it's funny to think a lot of what I do wasn't really feasible a couple of decades ago.

We definitely need more of this. Great job to both of you! I'm surprised that purpleschala knows so much detail of the sound hardware of NES,SNES,and PS. Definitely a hardcore gamer/geek😂. Correct me if I'm wrong.I bet most KZbin instrument players don't know anything about that. The music on pc version of FF7 is quite different from the PS version. If i remembered correctly, PS version using a certain midi synthesizer which has the unique soundfont. My S3 Sonicvibes doesn't have that one. Later i heard Creative sound blaster 16 which contains Yamaha midi synthesizer can produce very similar to the PS Version. I never verified this though. Anyway, can't wait for the next episode.
@purpleschala Жыл бұрын
OHHHHH MAAAAAAN I AM SO HAPPY YOU BROUGHT UP THE PC VERSION i totally forgot about that!!! 😍😍 Though to me the PC version sounds pretty similar, maybe a little more detailed in some places, since the game shipped with the original soundfonts that could be played by Soundblaster cards (btw I'm shocked you had a S3 Sonicvibes, those were kinda rare!! I didn't know anyone who had one--how did you like it?) and also shipped with, like you said, the Yamaha SYXG70 for soundcards that had MIDI synthesis capabilities which also sounded quite similar to the PS1 version! I always thought that was an interesting twist, since Yamaha was partnered with Sega for their soundchips and had the lock on FM synthesis, and the Saturn was the direct competitor to PS1 at the time lol. Thank you for bringing this up and thank you so much for listening!!!! I was very very into synths and MIDI as a teenager, and the topic of vintage console audio and chiptune composition is super fascinating to me, so I'm glad it wasn't boring hahaha!
@greenclover913 Жыл бұрын
@@purpleschala I'm excited that you're happy, even more so that you asked about the S3 Sonicvibes. It was a birthday present from Aunt, comes with my very first Customized build PC. Her friend selected the hardware, including the S3 Virge/DX video card, also known as a 2D/3D accelerator back in the day. He may have a personal preference on the S3 chip. The sound card is quite unique, and, being young at the time, I couldn't fully comprehend its capabilities. I do remember being able to set up sound banks in the Windows 98 control panel, with options for 1/2/4 MB, although the 4MB option was grayed out in my case. According to 'jwt27' on Vogons the GM synth supports 32-note polyphony and simple reverb/chorus effects. The sound differences, especially in the Battle theme, stood out. A KZbinr (@thunderpeel2001) posted a comparison video between the PS PC (1998) and Steam (2012), and it aligns with what I remember from the S3. Interestingly, my Steam version is identical to the PS version, after some inspection on it, I found original soundbank found in the installation MIDI folder as *.sf2 files. Back then, I was frustrated when I discovered the Battle theme was different from the PS version. Instead of playing games, I found myself in front of the PC, trying to recreate the exact sound. In the end , I managed to find the best setting for the S3. How silly I was! 🤣 The S3 synthesizer holds up well in my memory, not quite as impressive as Yamaha and Sound Blaster, but definitely better than Microsoft's which is default option in Windows 98. Although the card isn't with me now, probably sitting somewhere in my parents' house, it brings back a lot memories. A fun fact: the S3 Sonicvibes chip ran hotter than the S3 Virge Graphics card under working mode. Whether it's a good or bad thing, I'm not sure. However, after the motherboard was upgraded which introduced AC97 within it. The S3 is definitely the one I prefer.

Thank you so much!!! I think it's fair to say that Ruby knows a lot more about the original production techs than I do. @purpleschala Жыл бұрын
@@greenclover913 WOW! This was an absolute treat to read, thank you so much for relating all your experiences with the S3. That's wild that it was working harder than the graphics card lol!!! I'm impressed you got it working on Windows, if I recall it was only compatible with DOS? but I could be misremembering. And I had to laugh when you said you spent ages trying to tweak the card settings to resemble the PS1 version more because I honestly would have done the EXACT SAME THING LOL! that would have bothered me a lot !!!!! especially since you hear the battle theme the most throughout the game! LOL!! I guess if you had anything other than a Soundblaster it sounded drastically different on PC. I can only imagine how amazing it sounded with Roland MT-32 users. Thanks so much for the fun conversation!!

Fascinating stuff, especially the tangent on how the music was originally composed for NES and how it evolved during SNES and Playstation eras. My favorite is the Final Fantasy IV version. Maybe it is due to being the first one I came in contact with - so it feels more "pure" and "original" to my ears. But it does retain some striking clarity that feels very much in the right place there.
@IsrafelCello Жыл бұрын
So glad you enjoyed it!! I love the IV version, I think you are definitely on to something as far as when one has a one's first experience. My first time playing IV was in a very impressionable period for me, and I still have very vivid memories of it.
@purpleschala Жыл бұрын
Ahhhh hey there!!! ❤️❤️❤️😀😀😀😀 thanks so much for listening I was hoping you would!!! 😀 Haha-somehow I KNEW your favorite would be FFIV, just from our conversations and your love for SNES era FFs, the prelude is just more front and center in IV than it is in VI or V, even FFT, though I think its usage in P.R. Movie and the victory fanfare is super cool and a close second to FF8 imo, just for its very interesting transformation!! Thanks so much again for tuning in!!
@mad0gre Жыл бұрын
@@purpleschala Hah, you are spot on there. When I think of booting up FF6 what comes to mind is the ominous church organ of the title screen, never "Prelude". FFT makes me think of the first notes of the opening song of the intro video. FFT always felt like a different deal somehow, anyway. FF7 "Prelude" felt back then - perhaps fittingly - a more modern take of the same old song. As if it was trying to communicate to me back then: "Final Fantasy is now 3D my boy, gone is the gorgeous pixel art and last gen sound. This is the future, get used to it". While I did not resent it - time will always move forward after all - FF7 never really grew on me for multiple other reasons. The soundtrack is excellent, but maybe for that reason the true "Prelude" was always the FF4 version. When the strings kick in it fills me with an undescribable sense of nostalgic familiarity that tugs to my heart. I can almost see myself back then, playing it for the first time. Oh well, enough rambling on my silly musings. I'm looking forward to this journey. It was an excellent talk to listen to while cooking dinner ;)

I know just about all of purpleschala's videos and I play them over and over. It's nice to finally hear what her voice sounds like. I never knew there was so much laughter that went along with her, because when she's playing the piano, she's all business, which is how it SHOULD be. She's a lot of fun and sounds like someone I work with. I don't know anything about music, except that I have always love d listening to it on the radiio since I was a kid. Even though I don't know anything about the4 techincal points of music, I enjoyed hearing the two of you going back and forth talking about all of the technical aspects of the music you both love. Listening to purpleschala's version of With the Stars and Us made me go out and get the Persona5 Songbook just for that piece. I'm getting better at it, but I now see that she adds her own little touches to the piece, here and there, which I'll never be able to replicate. Interestingly, I gave the original soundtrack a listen and I can't stand it. Purpleschala's version elevated the piece to another level. I'm amazed by that. It's so much better than the original.
