ISS Voice Reception on a Kenwood TH D75A

Kevin shows us, with out doppler shift method ,receiving a signal from the ISS world wide repeater with a downlink receive frequency of 437.800. He does does his demo using an Elk dual Band Log periodic and comparison with the Diamond SRH320A. you will be surprised with his results.

Rotating the antenna changes the polarization of the antenna relative to the satellite, it's not doppler shift. Doppler shift is the increasing or decreasing of the received frequency due to the satellite moving through space at a high speed relative to you on the ground. When the satellite is approaching you the frequency can be as much as 10kHz or more higher and when it is moving away from you can get as high as 10kHz or more lower in frequency. Most people that do satellite work with a radio that does not have a VFO will program 5 to 11 different frequencies into their radio to account for the doppler shift from beginning to end of the pass. Start with the highest frequency at the beginning of the pass and work your way to the lowest frequency at the end of the pass. In the video you can hear the signal sounds distorted and clears up. That's because the radio is set to one frequency.

The Elk is a much better satellite antenna, it’s directional and has some gain. The TH-D75A works great for the ISS APRS digipeater.
