I think Issa's show problem (Rap Shit) issue was the network, i love the show but i believe because it was on MAX which is a extremely top platform the expectations were to high for her. Majority of Max shows are emmy winners targeting a different audience in my opinion. Now understand I am not suggesting her work is not high Calibur enough, I just feel that MAX sets the bar is too high at this point. I think if she went the 50 Cent route and took her vision to Starz she would have had more success. just like the Power Universe or P Valley, Starz is more of a platform for her vision and it supports entertainment for her target audience

Max wasn’t the issue given its less pressure of expectations than an actual HBO series. Insecure is one of the most successful HBO shows of an Era. Rap Sh!t wasn’t marketed properly. It’s a cutting edge Hip Hop show with a huge potential Target Demographic. I don’t think the Writing and Acting were Emmy level but the show was finding itself and constantly improving. This could have been a major Ratings success if not also a Critically Acclaim series.

Just because something is Emmy winning or nominated doesn’t mean it was an actual good show. These people are running the show and they control what wins and what gets nominated. Sometimes yall really gotta put those labels on the back burner and look at the reality of the situation for what is most likely is. She said what she said because that’s her experience from working in that industry. Yall don’t be telling regular everyday people that they are lying when they are talking about the hardships they are experiencing in their field of work, but yall love making it seem like black people in Hollywood are making stuff up went they are pointing out clear systemic racial issues they are still experiencing even in 2024. There are waaaaay too many subpar white shows that have gotten a 2-3 series release before it was canned. They will kill off our stuff especially if it is building us in too much of a powerful light. It's not. Just look at how Tubi is viewed. Tons of original stuff by black people and almost all of it is cheap made trash. People like Issa Rae just need to accept that you need to put amazing quality and then hope a big audience discovers it due to great word of mouth. American Faction for example is is an amazing movie and gets great word of mouth because of that. Compare that to The Color Purple that is now a musical which not many people were asking for in the first place when the original was a straight drama and The Book of Clarence that is so over the place tone wise that it's even hard to say what genre the movie is. At times it's almost a spoof movie and at times it tries to be a real drama with biblical undertones. Turns out there's not many people that look for The Passion of the Christ mixed with Monty Python and the Holy Grail in one movie

Not to mention there are black owned studios and even production companies that are building like Kevon Stage studios, Tyler Perry has his and Oprah. They are all pretty new and still put out some higher quality shows and films. It's ok to not start off at the top. It's ok to take a step back if necessary. The we push towards having our own the more we can put out. We're just going to have to take the good with the bad until it's all good.

Now that I live in NYC the entire ordeal is extremely expensive. 3 people is 100 dollars or more for a movie that I can stream on all the platforms that I pay for also. HBO, Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Disney and I’m sure I’m forgetting another one that I pay for. So I’m more selective and I rather just go to a Broadway show if I’m honest

Actually not all black projects are marketed as a black movie by black media. White media tries to put it in a box which is something black actors complained about in the past. When Best Man II came out it was a box office success and topped all the movies opening weekend. White media got wind of it and started purposefully started labelling it a black movie in their write ups in order to pigeon hole it.

Actually that isn't altogether true.They want white shows and producers who make money but they have an agenda to tell specific types of stores about black people - so they purposefully set black shows up to fail if the show isn't dealing in what they perceive a black show should be. The shows about drug dealers are always approved. They have conditioned us to think that if black folks are going to win an Oscar it has to be for a period piece, a slavery piece, a story about a bad mother, or a movie about black trauma. A black movie about a family like that which was shown in The Blindside would never be up for an Oscar. They purposefully bought the story about Nat Williams the slave who rebelled against his slave owners then targeted the director by bringing up an old-ass accusation in order to tank the movie - lest black folks got any ideas.

We had a big window and opportunity to show more of our art to people but it was all repetitive stuff, all trauma based as someone said below, more educational or revolving around the black experience, and non appealing to large audiences. I get it, at a time where we finally had more visibility we wanted to show what we went through but we forgot about telling great stories and mostly about profit. We can tell the stories we want but don't expect it to make a profit when it appeals to only 12 percent of the population max. Marketing is also a problem, production budgets as well.

This is literally proving their point, that these black themed shows aren’t profitable. CTG says you have to go out and support these shows, people don’t support them because they don’t want to see them. Personally I think the issue is every black themed show seems to be about racism. I remember when 12 years a Slave came out, though it was a good movie, I was thinking, another movie about black suffering. One, not every Black show or movie is about racism. Two, I disagree that those shows aren't profitable because Black shows are being cancelled regardless of popularity or success. The problem is the audience isn't diverse. Just as an example, the most successful "white" shows aren't strictly being watched by white people. The audience it reaches is diverse. If you look at the most successful Black shows, the audience is far less diverse. White people aren't tuning into "Lovecraft Country" or "Rap Sh*t" on a weekly basis like Black people are tuning into "Modern Family" or those shows.

I went to watch the Color Purple, and the Book of Clarence at the cinema. I enjoyed the new CP more than the original. Bought it on Prime Video a few days later so my friends and family could watch it. They all love it. It wasn't what none of us expected. The storyline is still there but the tone of the movie is way different. When I went to watch CP at AMC there were way way more white people there than black people there. So I agree with Charlamagne, we don't support black movies the way we should.

Remakes used to be one of the main things studios could bank on. People don't want to go to theaters to see an original story anymore, Book of Clarence being an example of that. (Movie is dope btw). My issue is the culture that seems to remain popular and continues to sell, regardless of its impact on the youth, I don't have any solutions to the problem, my household and the content I choose to view has always been based on my values. These movies aren't doing good because they aren't showing everywhere. They aren't showing Book of Clarence at ANY theaters in my area. They are showing Orgins only a couple of theaters and they started showing American Fiction a week or two AFTER the release date!!!!

Ratings are ratings and if the ratings are poor the show gets canceled whether it’s independent or not. People are just not watching tv anymore, going to the movies,their attention spans are short or they just stream.

I think the black box offices would bring in a great return for black films if they simply released them on streaming platforms. I personally quit going to theaters years ago. It’s much more convenient to watch a movie at home and pause when needed. I feel like going to the movie theater is becoming a vintage experience like the drive-ins.

Multiple factors can affect the ratings/revenue i do think one of them is ppl are tired of remakes, the industry went all in on nostalgia and we're reheating shit that wouldnt translate today, recasting things for diversity quotas, and the very little that was new was of poor quality that goes for any movies "black" or "white" , I knew profit was number 1 in the execs head but green lighting trash bc it already has a name and banking on nostalgia but cancelling smtg else that has zero room to grow after a succesful season is backwards to me

They don't start talkin about Issa until @3:25 ish. But, the networks have done it before. Getting a bunch of black TV shows so we can boost their numbers and then they cancel us once they are good. It was never a question about if we can pull numbers, it's just that they don't want and respect us so we gotta do our own thing. Charlemagne mentioned ratings, which he is right about. However, let’s say the show caters to a black population then rating will look weak and networks will cancel. This goes back to us having ownership, and Issa was successful being independent which I understand why she would do that.
