Many experts believe that Istanbul will soon be hit by a major earthquake - potentially one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent history. It’s only a matter of time.
Istanbul is located directly on the North Anatolian Fault, between two tectonic plates. These move apart by two to three centimeters a year, over a length of 1,200 kilometers. This is why severe earthquakes in the region are a regular occurrence. A quake in Istanbul itself is only a matter of time and will affect millions of people. An earthquake with a predicted magnitude of 6 to 7 on the Richter scale would devastate the city.
Actress and filmmaker Nisan Arikan witnessed a severe quake in the region when she was nine years old. Together with geophysicist Patricia Martinez-Garzon, who researches the earthquake risk in Istanbul, she sets out to find solutions. How can the city’s 16 million residents prepare for a worst-case scenario?

@@suziecue3027 The thing is Florida is enforcing and tightening the building code, especially recently after the Surfside collapse. Additionally, the HOAs are required to carry out all regular and structural maintenance, homeowners are required to install hurricane-resistant roofs and windows etc, all in the effort to minimize the damage and loss of life. Of course it wasn't always like that, but lessons have been learnt and actions taken after every disaster. The catastrophic earthquakes in Turkiye sparked the debate on the serious issues that contributed to potentially avoidable tragic consequences and on the need to be better prepared for known risks.

I couldn't walk in the streets of Istanbul without the fear of an earthquake. Everything was so DENSE. They say we'd have 5 seconds warning. What can you do in 5 seconds? Not enough time to take an elevator, run to a plaza, or even move from where you are! You'd just have to pray to the gods and hope for the best. It would be a catastrophe.

42:02 most of us that were born and live in an earthquake prone city feel the same way. Not much we can do about it. I remember the '99 quake, i lived in Bucharest, Romania. It was around 3 AM, and we thought it was a small quake in our country, in the morning we found out that it was a big one in Turkey :/

Currently, doing research regarding earthquake preparedness, the key to swift recovery is social capital and earthquake proof infrastructure, reliable forewarning systems do not exist as of yet. Istanbul has a shitload of previous mismanagement to fix. And the way I know my folk, we are going to be in hell once the quake does strike. Many of my family members died in Kahramanmaras in the quake, and that's why I'm doing said research. Turkey really needs to fund its NGO and volunteer sector, because they compensate what the government can not help with. I hope the earthquake never strikes, or at least only strikes once Istanbul is prepared accordingly, but i doubt it. I'm afraid of what comes afterward.

So many photos from the Hatay earthquake (and several of those from the last Istanbul one) show clearly the way that even long-time earthquake-related construction norms haven't been respected. The buildings that survived best are those smaller houses built traditionally - with wooden cross beam structures that can move & hence reduce the destructive impact of quakes.

0:14: 🌍 Istanbul faces a grave danger as it is threatened by a potential major earthquake disaster. 6:16: 🌍 Turkey is a tectonically active region prone to earthquakes due to the natural movements of tectonic plates. 12:53: ! Geoscientists use seismic technology to investigate tectonic plate movements along the North Anatolian fault in Turkey. 18:59: 🌍 The Eurasian and Anatolian plates are locked due to friction, accumulating energy that is released in earthquakes every 250 years. 24:22: 🌍 Scientists study the tectonic processes in Turkey to understand the impending threat of earthquakes. 31:03: 🏢 The video discusses the potential risk of earthquake in Istanbul due to poor construction practices and lack of adherence to building regulations. 37:22: 🏢 Existing buildings in Istanbul are at risk of earthquake damage, but a non-invasive technology using shock absorbers could potentially protect them. The top historical buildings received more earthquake preparedness attention than the almost 3 million buildings with 25 million people in them. Hagia Sophia is expected to survive due to its method of construction. The true worry is the number of lives lost and how these people are going to die, unbelievable tragedy. The Turkish minister said 600.000 buildings would collapse. Those who make it out alive, can not make it out of the city because there won't be roads, ambulances, firehouses, hospitals, bridges, clean water, electricity, communication networks ....

There is a mistake in video. Turkish seismic code and regulations did not change after 1999 earthquake. They were changed in 1997. Also the buildings which were constructed according to the 1975 code survived in 1999 earthquake( they got damaged but did not collapse). In video, we see the University of pavia and italian dampers but we have not seen the experiment done by ITU where real size buildings were tested. In that experiment the effectiveness of CFRP material can be seen easily. We want less geology, less urban planning, but more structural engineering next time;) And ask it to Turkish academicians. I have spoken as a Turkish academician in structural engineering field.

It's not just Turkey. As the earth warms, everything is shifting. As the Arctic, Antarctica, Greenland melt, the weight of the ice is shifting into the oceans. Its the same when you press your finger into the side of a balloon and then let go. The air shifts to fill where the balloon was depressed . Global warming/ ice melt is affecting the risk of massive earthquakes around the world. Extreme droughts, depletion of aquifers and oil fracking also increase likelihood of shifting local faultlines.

It makes me sad when i see how much damage and loss people have sustained. It is very important to warn and to remind people of the imminent danger. But it is important to adress the countries which are not as prone to earthequakes as Turkey, Japan, Chile, need to be teached of that danger in teir country, look at Morrocco which is not that prone to erathquakes had a major devastation last month. My country of Bosnia and Herzegovina is also prone to earthequakes, no as strong as in Turkey, but the issue here is that we very fast forget that magnitude 5 or 6 is possible even in thge capital and just don't really think about that. In March 2009. we have had a strong earthquake of a magnitude nearly 5, and exprets said, there might be another in 50 years of maby even magnitude 6. the last that strong near Sarajevo was in 1962, some more than 60 years ago.

After the devastating 1999 earthquake, the government introduced a special tax to enhance disaster preparedness and fund nationwide infrastructure improvements. Unfortunately, these funds were misused by later administrations, who redirected them to favored companies. These companies then built substandard buildings that were not earthquake-resistant. Despite these failures, these political figures continue to be reelected, highlighting a serious issue with accountability.

Yes, the fault line is only 8 km away from the city, but the biggest problem is the very low quality of construction and earthquake preparedness of this huge 20+ million city. Most concrete used cannot even be classified as concrete in developing countries. Other earthquake prone countries in the world - Japan, Chile, New Zealand, Italy, USA are way more prepared than Turkiye - sadly.
