Istanbul's Basilica Cistern: Saving It From Collapse

Built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 542 AD to supply water to the palace, the Basilica Cistern (known in Turkish as Yerebatan Sarayı, or Subterranean Palace) is one of Istanbul's most timeless and magnificent historical attractions. It is, however, under immediate risk of collapse in the event of an earthquake.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) is currently conducting the most elaborate and comprehensive restoration project in the Cistern's existence. Watch our video to find out more about the careful work going on to save Istanbul's sunken palace from imminent collapse.
