Built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 542 AD to supply water to the palace, the Basilica Cistern (known in Turkish as Yerebatan Sarayı, or Subterranean Palace) is one of Istanbul's most timeless and magnificent historical attractions. It is, however, under immediate risk of collapse in the event of an earthquake.
