Thanks for such a wonderful city guide - it brought back memories from a trip to Istanbul about 20 years ago and reminded me why I need to go back soon. It is such a fabulous city with a rich history to explore. One of my best memories is having a cup of apple tea on the almost deserted platform at Marmary station late at night, waching the Orient Express getting ready to leave - magical.

Fantastic video Istanbul is definitely one of my favourite cities I have visited. With the exception of the Marmaray Railway Station, I did visit every tourist site on your list including the Bosphorus Cruise which we stopped at Dolmabahce Palace, Rumeli Fortress, then onto the Bosphorus Bridge to the Asian side and went to Camlica Hill and then to Camlica Mosque before we headed back to the European side. Rustem Pasha Mosque is close to the bazaars (and Spice Bazaar) hidden away which is worth a visit. I would also add Sultan Ayup Mosque and Pierre Lotti Cable Car. Tried the fish sandwich and had a proper Turkish breakfast in one of the restaurant close to Galata Bridge. Many of the sites like Topkapi Palace, Aya Sofia, Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern and Gulhane Park are easily done in a day then you can go down to the bazaars, visit Rustem Pasha Mosque, go along the Galata Bridge and head to the top of Galata Tower about an hour before sunset. Sulemainye Mosque, Grand Bazaar and Theodesian Wall can be done in on another day

Anything you buy in the Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar) will obviously be charged at tourist prices. Kuruyemiş (nuts and dried fruit) as well as tea and spices can be bought outside this bazaar at much lower prices. All larger supermarkets and specialty shops sell these goods.

Another fantastic video - beats the old lonely planet guides "hands down" . I am interested to know which area you stayed during your trip? - I have been to Istanbul several times around 20 years ago but I am planning on taking my family - including two teenage kids. I have previously stayed in sultanahmet due to its proximity to everything touristy (plus views of the bosphorus from the hotel rooftop cafes') but I am also looking to provide the family an authentic experience. Also last time I was in Istanbul there was a major issue with the taxis ripping off tourists - has this been cleaned up? at all or is it safer just to use Uber ? Thanks again
@januslog2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Mark, I really appreciate! I stayed at Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu. It may not be the most authentic experience as these are indeed the more historic and also touristy parts of town but I enjoyed the proximity to all the amazing sites and restaurants. Alternatively you could stay at the Asian side but you’d have to take the ferry boat or metro all the time. I didn’t have major issues with taxis but make sure to use the official (yellow) ones and that they turn on the meter 👍😊

Very nice list. Where would you say is the best preserved section of the Constantinople walls? After watching so many videos, I find surprising there are not more ancient landmarks given the city's long and rich history. By ancient I mean pre ottoman era
@januslog Жыл бұрын
The wall can be seen and visited almost throughout. In my view, it’s almost too “preserved”. It must have been restored to its original state quite a while ago. Maybe start with the big portals that are now gaps for the major through streets. For pre-Ottoman sights I’d also recommend the hippodrome and cisterns, and of course the Hagia Sofia.
@b3arwithm3 Жыл бұрын
@@januslog I have those on my list. Thanks. I was hoping to see more of that. Is there any section of the wall we are allowed to climb on and walk?

At the 44minutes mark: about Fish Restaurants. I disagree with his recommendations: those are the worst places to have fish. You can easily get sick. I had fish at one of those nice restaurants overlooking the Bosphore, and had a good intoxication the following day. I had to stay in the hôtel room all day. When it comes to food there is nothing better than eating like locals and where locals eat. Avoid touristy areas.

@januslog Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Most of the places are in walking distance, except Ortakoy and of course the Asian side. But it would be too difficult to do everything in one day. I’d split up into several days, spending a day on the Fatih side, another day in Karakoy and a day in the Asian side. If you have more time, that’s of course better. Ferries to the Asian side leave from Eminonu. There are also trains going.

Hi Jack, yes, that’s possible, although for the Asian side you will need to take a boat. I’d factor in a minimum of 3 days

Sorry, ever been here? Any own impressions? Sounds and probably is, someone reading right out of a guide-book!

Yes, all of the narration was scripted and narrated by myself - and all the footage is of course recorded by myself too. And it is indeed meant to be an informative comprehensive guide to all the places I’d recommend visiting there. I figured there are enough vlogs on Istanbul that are full of opinion already 😊 But thank you for watching 👍

Background Music is loud, very distracting & makes it hard to watch the video. I had to stop. Too bad.
