Mark, it's folks like you with your Ram truck compounds that convinced me to do the same with this. Everyone always says "if you're towing, you want compounds", and I thought "well,that's all I do all day everyday, is tow". So glad I did it, can't wait to do the next one

@fat guy Mgtow both are stock turbos. The one that came on the motor is the holset he400ve. The larger one is a box Borg Warner s478 with a cast compressor wheel. at some point I want to increase the compressor size of the low pressure turbo, something like an s483 possibly. For now though, building it on the cheap, it works very well

Have I got this right, the exhaust firstly drives the 2nd in line turbo, then drives the 1st turbo? That is if you consider the turbo attached to the air filter the 1st turbo.
@dougkratz52694 жыл бұрын
Your are correct sir! It is a traditional compound arrangement. CAT's ACERT engines are exactly the same. They are just mounted opposite.

@@steveallen1340 sure! It's a fantastic concept. Best of both worlds with different sized turbos. Slightly more complex,but well worth it for performance
@N54God6663 жыл бұрын
The idea is to precompress the air at a higher efficiency then the main turbo could ever do. Feeding cooler already compressed air for the main one to then finish compressing, leading to a cooler air charge output which then lets the intercooler cool down much easier making more power from denser air

What is that between the cold side & hot side of the lower turbo? I'm a diesel mechanic and I've never seen anything like that
@dougkratz52694 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to, the lower turbo is the OEM for this engine which is a Holset he400ve. The VG mechanism and the actuator are part of the center section. It has coolant lines running in and out of it as well. Hope that helps

Any updates on how this is working on the road ?
@dougkratz52696 жыл бұрын
Charles Pyatt sure,thx for asking. Simply awesome. Even with a slight increase in fueling,smoke is all but gone now. Much quicker acceleration,and near stock exhaust volume. EGTs are lower, back pressure to boost ratio is 1.2 to 1 at 50lbs. I should have done this a long time ago. Would have save me time and money experimenting with other turbos

Question...we all know the ISX and X15 Have amazing engine brakes. How did the engine brake perform now that you had compounded turbos???
@dougkratz52693 жыл бұрын
Great question! Every bit as good as stock because you still keep the VG turbo intact. I can't really say it was better but it certainly wasn't worse. It's the reason I went with the compounds. I had originally removed the VG turbo and was running an s478 BorgWarner. Great turbo for performance on that engine, but I definitely missed the engine braking of the VG turbo. That's why in my opinion, the compounds are the best way to go.

What is the atmospheric charger?
@dougkratz52692 жыл бұрын
Not sure of your question. If you mean what size,it's an S478 borg Warner,78mm compressor,96mm turbine. It is also referred to as the primary charger. Air from the filters enters it first(atmospheric pressure) it pressurizes the secondary or smaller turbo. Hope that helps. Oh,and if that is your 'A' that is pictured,that is FINE!!👍

interesting, cat tried this and everyone who had one couldn't wait to get it back to one good turbo.
@dougkratz52693 жыл бұрын
The turbos never were and still aren't the problem with that (CAT)engine. If you've ever driven a properly built and tuned Acert C15 with the factory compound turbos still on it, you would never want to go back to anything else. Intake valve actuators, high compression, and EPA tuning were the problems with the Acert from the factory. But everyone thought that since they didn't perform like their old single turbo, it had to be the turbos. Wrong. Thanks for watching
@michaelcoachtechvp28463 жыл бұрын
@@dougkratz5269 I disagree a single turbo on a 60 series which can be swapped for a larger single turbo is superior why you say . I can wrench one out in a few hours while having a coffee . The twin turbo set up when you blow out manifolds because of excessive heat and drive pressure is 5 times as much to repair for labour and for parts also the root cause of these failures are the twin turbos too much heat is introduced into everything . Looks cool I guess but not practical at all . Single turbos usually can be tuned for more hp anyways .

How did you do your stacks what elbow is that I'm about to buy a 2017 kenworth looking into stacks and I've already ordered my twin set up from pdi
@dougkratz52695 жыл бұрын
Gil Ropte- I completely replacd the entire exhaust system from the turbo to the elbows with 5 inch stainless pipe. The stacks themselves are 6" Lincoln Chrome with Dynaflex muffler inserts in the center spools. You can't order a direct fit kit, you just have to order the individual pieces for what you need. Four States was very helpful with this. It's just a standard 90-degree elbow that reduces to 5". if you don't want to go to the full expense of replacing all the piping underneath, I would suggest getting a shop to make a 5 inch to 4 inch reducer to connect to your existing set up, and then connect that to your new elbows. B&H Industries in Souderton PA does all my pipe fabrication. They are fantastic with stainless. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have anymore questions. Good luck. You will definitely love that twin set up

Your top turbo is to small if you had to put a waste on it. Need to look into a less blade count turbine to slow it down or bigger ar or maybe even a bigger turbo. Normally you want something in the 110mm area for top turbo to keep the boost low and efficient. Looks really beautiful, i have a signature 600 isx3 2010 386 that pumps almost 800hp with compounds. I didn't use a wastegate on my top one so thats where the idea comes from

I had a little over five grand into it. But that's been several years ago now. Your best bet is just to buy the add a turbo kit from PDI *UPDATE* I just helped a friend install PDI's add-a- turbo kit to his X15. I was pretty impressed with the workmanship quality and fitment. That was the first hands-on experience I had with it, but I would definitely recommend it from what I've seen now. He is very happy with the performance. Only thing that was disappointing is they would not send the 1.45 AR exhaust housing in the kit. Only the 1.15, which is no good! We proved that on the dyno. It currently has the 1.32 now and that works pretty good, but I was really hoping they would send the 1.45

Hey bud, thanks for the compliments! I no longer own the truck, but the new owner is taking just as good of care of it. Never had it on the dyno, so conservative estimate would be 650+ on the horsepower, I'm guessing the torque is somewhere in the 2300 range. I just know it was real fun to drive 😉

Tyler Golden this truck has never been a good mgp truck. Has 3.25 rears, and I moved up from low pro 22.5s to 11R22.5, so it will fly, but usually about 5.7-6 average. Probably someone with a lighter foot could do better. Mileage with the compounds didn't change much at all, but driveability is SOOO much better. Also,I didn't build it for mileage,and don't really drive for it either. It requires extreme discipline to do that with these turbos, because it just wants to GO!

Damn that thing is nice. Is that wastegate controlled by air pressure?
@dougkratz52693 жыл бұрын
Yes, off of the boost line which also ran to the gauge in the cab. I had an inline boost controller installed as well so I could adjust the opening pressure. It was pretty neat and it was all experimental for me, but if I would do it again I would have just put a larger exhaust housing on the turbo and not use the wastegate. But it was a fun learning experience. And a good way to empty my wallet out 😂

Because the he400ve turbo isn't capable of providing enough air flow on its own to cool the amount of fuel this motor has. but it is nice to keep it for the additional engine breaking power, and the instant response. You only have to drive this truck one time and it would answer your question as to why
