This came from early in the series. The presence of Michael Bates and George Layton. Needless to say, The Sgt Maj's attempts to have the part posted, came to nothing. A classic comedy series with a lot of really good humour in addition to the situation gags. One of Croft and Perry's better efforts.

I hate it when internet divs start spacking off about how these wonderful comedies succumbed to "political correctness" That's absolute bollocks and does the shows a complete disservice. It Ain't Half Hot Mum came to a natural end partly when Jimmy Croft and David Perry started writing Hi-De-Hi. Anyone who thinks it was a casualty of "the loony left" or something is talking out of their arse

@AsDeadAsDillinger6 жыл бұрын
I think you're a bit confused about what they are saying, mate. (Or you're attacking a 'straw man' on purpose.) Nobody is claiming that the series did not end naturally and nobody is claiming that 'political correctness' played any part in the natural ending of the series' story arc. The writers had gone about as far as they could with the characters and they were obviously out of ideas. Their ACTUAL issue that people seem to have is that the reasons given by the BBC as to *why it would not be running any repeats of the series on BBC TV* (as they had done with every other popular BBC show) *was entirely due to BBC's stated concerns of 'cultural insensitivity', 'racism' and 'homophobia' etc.* So it's undeniably and unavoidably factual for someone to state that the series was not repeated by the BBC due to concerns over 'political correctness'.
@Bromley686 жыл бұрын
@@AsDeadAsDillinger That's fair comment, although at least one other person on here does actually seem to be saying just that (have a look at Philip Croft's comment below - where he's alluding to "BBC Marxists"

I haven't watched an episode of this since childhood in the 1980's. My memories of the show are not detailed or vivid. They wrote to type and the actors played to type. I have no memory of the show's chronology, but the Sergeant Major's inner monologue suggests it was a later episode. Why? Because laying pipe as part of an inner voice is clumsy and really lazy. There's no way a decent writer would use a hackneyed conceit in the first couple of series.
