Maybe it's my bias showing, but even the way the remake just looks got a downgrade. The colors in the original are very warm, mostly browns and yellows with touches of mahogany or red. The space is cluttered, but cozy, and relaxing to look at. The remake throws in lots of cold grey metal, and lots of "nerdy" crap of all different colors, making the backgrounds far more chaotic and distracting. The lighting is also different, a harsh, bright white to the original's warm, easy yellow. The result being, even if you turn the sound off, the remake is harder to watch, in that it literally is unpleasant to look at.

I think it could have worked with different characters and a different script, but the same spirit. Like with the Office. Joel McHale can’t pull of nerdy though. He’s too fit and good-looking. He’s a cool guy who looks like he beat up nerds in high school (I’m sure he didn’t.)

The major thing that I noticed from this was that Joel didn't feel like he was playing a character. He's very good at doing the asshole cynic but I have barely seen him do anything out of that. He reminds me very much of an exroommate of mine who wanted to be an actor but whenever he tried to do anything that was out of who he was naturally it would be "I can see you're trying to act, I'm very aware I'm watching a performance right now". So I guess what I'm trying to say is that he was the wrong choice for an IT character.

Pilots are always rough in all fairness. In many ways, had Joel not done this, he probably wouldn’t had gotten more tv pilots (including Community). And as a general rule of thumb, pilots are often rather restrocted as they’re grinding with all gears not fully working until one painfully sees what could improve.

How did they take the ideas from the jokes, and then take the joke out of the joke? It's clever actually. Like, the "I'm not afraid of you.... Emily" is a joke, "Emily... I'm not afraid of you" isn't a joke. Instead of misdirecting with the cup, they just make it intentionally boring while he's not answering the phone, they don't even make it obvious why he's not answering. It's really smart.
