Pirating in Star Citizen is finally getting real economics to support it. This will be a major component of life among star and getting to test it out in these still early stages is fantastic. Big thanks to ‪@Avenger__One‬ for the invite.

I had a feeling there would be some sensitivities around a video showcasing piracy in Star Citizen. Many players are waiting on full fledged features to explore the career paths they want. With persistent cargo it allowed those who dreamed of being pirates to start actually feeling like there is a gameplay loop for them. Unfortunately it comes at the expense of trading and cargo running safety. There is no "safe place" for players trying to avoid conflict which I do believe CIG wants for the final universe design. Like having lawless sectors and heavily policed sectors. Nor are there hauling missions to facilitate low risk, hauling gameplay. Every time a new feature is added it runs the risk of imbalancing something else due to the incomplete game design and that's unfortunate. Hopefuly Star Citizen gets to a place soon, where people can play the way they want. I don't think its fair to slam people for wanting to pirate in a game that facilities it as a viable career path. Nor do I think its fair subject all haulers to a single system with little consequences for grand theft and murder. But that's what Star Citizen is right now - unfair, due to it being incomplete. One day it will be a more feature complete game, that gives players a little more agency over their experience. But at the moment, people hauling high value payloads need to be extra careful.

I think the solution to this would be to add ways to insure ones cargo at the cost of a reduced profit margin. This would allow haulers and miners to be protected from total loss if they get hit while insured, while also encouraging them to take the risk of not insuring for larger profit, which of course makes no harmful changes to pirates

I agree to an extent. I wish more pirates would ask to negotiate, and I also wish that pirates that get caught, would lose as much as I do when they kill me…i.e. the equivalent of 1 week of gameplay. Piracy has way too little consequences as it stands, but it is part of the game. I just hope to see better law enforcement and punishment in the near future with mercenaries.

It’s actually easy to avoid being pirated as a cargo hauler. I’ve had numerous attempts but if you don’t simply fly directly upwards into orbit and accelerate to max speed close above ground and then climb upward with QT drive fully spooked and ready to go to any jump point, you can get away almost without fail. And then it’s very simple: jump to random places for a couple of million in first, only then go to your destination and snaring isn’t a thing. I’m yet to ever be pirated: or should I say, they’re yet to succeed.

Seems like Star Citizen is going to have to grapple with the same issues as Sea of Thieves, I wonder how they're going to balance the predator vs prey dynamic considering there aren't such strict limitations on ship or crew sizes, clearly it's going to be more fun for big groups to steal the haul of smaller groups, rather than grinding the PvE or mining content.

Good point. SoT limits a server to 6 ships I believe, giving players room to roam around and evade if needed. Although if a pirate ship is determine, you may need to engage at some point. But for the most part you can play PvE and enjoy the game, it's well balanced for sure. SC is still in development but we already know there will be security NPCs in protected areas for law abiding citizens. According to CIG, when it's at a polish state you'll be hard pressed in getting caught and serving time for committing crimes. There will also be systems that are the wild west and the only one saving you is your preparation.

I think at least part of the idea is to have systems with more strict security where say NPCs and bounty contracts will pop up and really make it hard to be a criminal and some will be lawless. So if you stay in high sec you won't be prey as much. That's kind of how EVE works, and I assume it will be similar in SC given their plans for Pyro.

@@LevelCapGaming I think a really cool idea is that we eventually get a sort of citizen passport/ID and some form of record is left on it and it goes away after awhile. Also I think this piracy gameloop might work VERY well with their upcoming reputation system as a player goes more towards lawless actions they will build more rep with outlaw factions like dusters and ninetails and it becomes more and more harder for them to find friendly stations in UEE/corporate controlled space.

Pro tip: soft locking/target pinning with alt+1,2,3 *_does_* let them know they are locked. the RDR LOCK icon on their ship HUD turns yellow instead of red.

I don’t do piracy myself but I knew this gameloop is supposed to be something SC is supposed to have, whether people like it or not. There will be space in the future with more security and other systems with none. And additional risks to piracy but for now it’s something to study l, observe, and non-pirates need to start employing security players or learn how to angle different quantum travel routes

They camp multi server freight buying stations . They scan the ships on the pads to see what's inside .Then when they find a target they call in players from the other servers , if you have escort they just call in more pirates as needed from other servers . But what gets me the most is the evil laugh when five guys shoot one guy . Everything Avenger One touches , he figures a way to turn it to crap . I wish we could combat log as good as he does .Maybe AO could teach us all his tricks on that subject .

@@Rgraceful1 well AOne did produce videos on how to avoid pirates and how to pirate, and I too keep an eye out for other players and ships nearby because I know it’s the Wild West out there…also I’ve never experienced piracy myself but I do take some precautions to help friends those who need a bit of back up I’m not good at pvp yet but I actually watch his tutorials on how to fight in SC. Because one of the elements of a full sandbox and player run environment IS player to player interaction and I don’t trust most humans… also these pirate heists remind me of some of the Fast and furious movies how they get a target, mark him, and let it ride

This video sucks so hard, and you'll never convince the guy that made it, or the cunts he played with in this video, that what they are doing is one of the most toxic things to do in an online game. It's not the piracy. It's gaming the system, and gaming at the expense of other players, AND wanting THAT to be your primary form of gameplay.

This illustrates a fundamental problem with MMO's with universal piracy or pvp ((unzoned pvp)). I think zoned pvp is a bad solution to this problem absolutely so don't think I am saying PVP is a bad thing. It's great. But, unzoned pvp where there are no consequences is how you kill a game. When you turn players in to farmables you kill the population of a game. Absolutely there should be pvp and it should have amazing rewards, but there really should be meaningful consequences. The prison system in the game is pathetic. It should be meaningful sentences that don't count down when you log off. A pirate should really have to worry about the law catching up to them. It's not really piracy if you don't. But, I don't have any skin in this myself as I'm way to busy RL to play PU ever and just am waiting for the single player, so this isn't in any way a complaint. Just a prediction about how a couple years down the road SC will have pop problems.

I agree with the prison being stupid. First day I landed in prison I had like almost a full days sentence and that made me really think about playing more carefully. Until I realized that i can just escape the prison (and keep the wanted level) or just log out for the day and play like nothing happened the next.

I've not played yet, but this seems like the most reasonable take on it so far. If you have zoned pvp you run into the runescape issue of the wilds being essentially dead. There should be an economic lockout of pirates by whatever SC group is the government. Essentially they should be either refused service point blank or have to steal from fueling stations, etc, that aren't lawless. If they do business in a place with law, buy fuel, it should make the authorities, or even better, bounty hunter players, get an alert as to where to find them.

honestly it would make sense to assist people requesting help and go pirate killing because you win reputation, make friends split of cargo you get off dead pirates and credits.. being part of the problem is only fun for so long but limits alot of what the game has to offer when on the path of piracy.. its a win win to make war against the pirates because it allows the other players to progress quickers adding to much more potentials to advanced players and whats possible in game.. keeping many players struggling from advancing limits what is possible with collaborating together .. choice is yours but becoming a pirate the easy way to take what you want with consequences.. makes sense to make money from killing pirates rather than becoming one and joing the list of c***

yeah i would totally play star marine more if there was more overall polish. sometimes its fine but the last time i played the desync was horrendous. making trying to snipe nearly impossible. also the fact that i cant seem the get the sensitivity down right. it was fine before but now for some reason i cant get it to feel right. i need a per zoom sensitivity. like i it mostly ok but like for example ads for the multitool is extremely high. not that big of deal the the multi tool but basically saying i cant control all of it the way i want to. also the movement feels a bit too swingy. like as if u were a walking water balloon. switching weapons and gear is clunky as hell too. trying to switch back to primary after medpenning. or panicking while trying to find the right angle to restock medpens hoping u dont get shot in the back

As a trader I’m stoked that piracy is now in the game is another hurdle to over come. Makes the payout so much more rewarding. However currently my concern is profit margins from trade is so low this is going to potentially push a lot of players off trading. Need to up trade profit given risks to keep people trading so that pirates have targets. Currently everyone will play as a pirate!

Ive tried trading and it sucks. The profit margins would be ok if there was enough material to fill a large cargo ship, like the hercules. But usually there are only a few boxes here and there, and considering the time it takes to travel between the buying and selling points to maximize the profit, its just not worth it. You make more money from just doing bunker missions.

My problem is that there's always a handful of dexterous players at the bleeding top of the gaming food chain that think they are entitled to trash a game experience for the other 95% of us. By the way, it's not necessarily solo that I'm looking for. Interactive doesn't have to mean cut-throat space battle where only an elite few, or cheaters, can prosper. I just want to be able to choose the level of interactivity I want. Getting your nuts roasted the second you leave space dock is not fun. People who like that crap are douchey humans, with little black hearts and sad souls. It stinks to Mars. And the smugness is enough to make you want to pound someone's face. Listening to this crew laugh it up while they take away something a dude may have worked a week or more to accumulate... man, when I went to school, we had zero toleration for punk ass bitches that acted like that. I do alot of gem mining, i tend to mine a ridiculous amount of gems at a time so its hogh risk high reward, and in my many runs from my home station, the 20 mil km jump to the moon and the 20 mil km jump back to the station, i have never encountered pirates of any sort. The joy of this game is to play it how you want, lawful or lawless. No need to bash people who want to live there pirate dream, just keep a clear head and make them think youre not worth the time and effort if you encounter them

Well Pirates have the total edge now on SC!! cause most people run cargo them selves and do not have a change in hell to defeat a group of people in multiple ships! No equality there. It would be okay if people could use npc´s on their ships, manning turrets or when breached fighting the pirates, at least it would be more equal...but as of now, pirates have the total edge over the game play. Yeah sure U can hire people to protect U but still more turn to the bad side when gaming cause it is so much easier to be bad and just nuking other ships and taking their cargo. I personally welcome both types of play being the "good" or "bad" guys, but this is not balanced right now.

I feel like the room for negotiations is extremely limited and I wish there was a way where a mutually beneficial piracy, as odd as that sounds, would be worked on. Still though, current piracy is atonement for those haulers who'd alt+f4.

@@asiftalpur3758 I think so, i mean they plan on adding like, rep with the criminal gangs so with pyro theres actually a couple of armor and weapon producers that are from the pyro system, so pirates and other baddies can make friends with gangs as well as arm up from pyro which can in theory lead to stanton being a bit more higher security.... as well as just other game systems like E war like the legionnaire is supposed to have... again piracy is in it's official infancy right now so it's rough around the edges, not overly tuned and the flight model alone and things like ship weapon rebalances and ship armor will help. so it'll be exciting to say the least not just for the pirate V hauler aspect but just the game in general

its definitely cool but ultimately if there isn't safe ways to do trade, people will just not do it at all or buy these big ships as it just wont be worth it. there needs to be some safe routes but less profit or some way where you don't risk all of your investment on the runs because lets face it, everybody knows the trade routes, and most people would rather play with others, get some action and make easy free money than do a long grind going A to B with a big risk.

There is less risky routes with lower profit margins. Med running between crusader and Hurston is very safe, short trip, lots of safe zones. As well as medical supplies not being expensive to buy. Gold is super expensive to buy, but sells very well. And is only available from a. Few locations. Ofcourse these spots are heavily pirated

A1 dipping his toes into basic piracy is fun, but you should ask to join on the guys in Mongrel Squad, they're been showcasing / headlining piracy in Star Citizen for years. Love a good piracy video, but it does seem so much easier now. Just soft death and collect. I liked the challenge it showed before more with co-ordinated EMPs etc. Keep it up though! :D

I dunno. I still find piracy to be very... uninteresting. Mostly because of the lack of features that it needs. The "soft death", the loot pinata upon "hard death", and the "shoot doors to open" mechanics are an unsatisfying kluge. And claiming that piracy is SC on hard mode is a joke- it's just ganking at this point. Maybe when component damage and black boxes are implemented?

I like the fact that piracy is a thing in Star Citizen now. I realize it can be frustrating to some people, but for me, it makes the game more rewarding even if you're not the one pirating. I, for one, am not much of a pve person. I like the sense of danger that comes with carrying precious cargo and knowing that there's a chance that someone may try to take it from me.

@@joppa560i understand the argument, but i also understand that with bugged comms, no tutorial for how to voice chat, gameplay that currently favors pirates, tricks like bringing in people from other servers so there is no defence, and knowledge of the history of games with systems like this, you’re going to find SC played only by pirates just dogfighting, and everyone else playing singleplayer or other games. Calls to just get good and get used to it are ultimately calling for a needed aspect, but in a game as broken and one sided as this one, and in a market of other games that can scratch the itch without these bugs and unfavorable odds, you’re basically calling for SC to be pirates pirating pirates

One of the biggest issue for me is punishment. This should be fine in pirate infested systems or systems with meh security, but honestly, systems like Stanton, this should not happen, or if you are caught, a few hours in jail that you can easily skip by logging off for the day or by doing the escape run just won’t cut it in my mind. There needs to be real consequences for taking the risk of attacking innocent players. Look at it this way, pirate systems would have lower consequences for pirates due to not having law enforced, and haulers going their do it at their own risk. But it should be the exact opposite in law binding systems where haulers should have lower consequences and pirates being caught will be punished severely with the aim to deter any wannabe pirates that is not skilled and fully dedicated to the cause. SC is too early for that, but I can tell you that most pirates, unlike you guys, are not willing to negotiate and just shoot to kill. This is frankly infuriating as it ruins the play session and you know there is no in game mechanics that makes it risky for the pirates. I mean, loosing half of your wealth in cargo that likely took a week to get vs logging out for a day when caught or free insurance for a couple of hours if they lose a fight and their ship. Piracy has no consequences!

This....All of this... I jokingly said pirates Alt-f4 out of their situations the same way traders did in the past. Like you said, it's being built.... But as a lawful player, it's hard to not feel like someone higher up has a soft spot for piracy. There are so many things stacked up against lawful players and pirates have the one risk.. Time.. Then they bring up the ship security and still find a way to force lawful players into a vulnerable position. It's getting annoying but I'm holding out hope that this gets smoothed over in time.

Its a remnant from the initial drop of 3.18, when you would get within about 100 meters of a ship your nose would kick and it would spin you around 180 degrees in the PU and in AC. The pvp community got used to it and started calling it jet-wash, because most of us spend 90% of our fights in that range.

xD believe it or, not, you can actually have fun with the game. you need other people tho and kind of make your own content. We held a 50vs50 large scale pvp event last year around 3 different outposts on one planet, went surprisingly smooth and was great fun.

Loved this and I have no problem with people engaging in actual piracy but that involves going after your valuables or ship not Just torping you with an eclipse from out of range and trolling chat. Half the cargo is lost when you just blow stuff up. I want to defend my ship on foot too if you manage to disable it that defense is a rush and loop in itself. It's the GRIEFERS and Trolls that go around claiming to be pirates when they're just blowing everything up or abusing the game (holding elevators at stations near ghost hollow/JT etc)

I wish piracy were more common. I run cargo and have been pirated once. I lost a freelancer max full of gold, but had a fun time trying to punch down the snare ship. An awesome 10 minute fight, well worth the lost gold. Part of the game, and makes cargo an actual risk. The game should not be about making number go up, but actually playing.

nope, stream sniping would assume the hauler was streaming and they used that to then pirate them. THAT would be not cool and a low blow even for the lowest pad rammer. what's happening here is they simply have people watching the points and when a target shows up they join on their friend and then start the hunt, theyre still putting in the effort of having to wait and find the person, you don't HAVE to go to that spot and then you wouldnt run into them, but people do and well then they don't think things through and then lose their cargo
