Garp is a mentor for a lot of marines, he's there to inspire and help the new bloods. He wants to be a teacher for them, but this time Garp is there to save someone he considers a grandson lets be honest. He couldn't save Ace because he chose duty, not this time Black Beard has made a mistake. This whole chapter is great, look at all these cool fruits I hope to see some more and get details on these fruits. I love how Sword seems to be the marine version of a yonko with Garp being the yonko. Something I caught was Alkigi's reaction to Kobby, I wonder if he was unaware of the connection or maybe he is a member of sword? A question I had at the end of the chapter though, what happened to Law!

Reading the spoilers before the release of this chapter and the "massive W for Garp in the chapter" comments had me thinking something very definitive was going to happen: that it would be a short fight, with Garp obliterating someone important, saving Coby and leaving the scene in style. But, all the setup of "here's all these important BB members, and here's a description of their stupid broken powers", as well as Garp's declaration that he's there to save Coby, the guy he makes a point of naming his successor(!) made me think of, as you said, Marineford. So my feeling at the end of the chapter was more of a "Garp might end up staying behind, holding all the BB pirates back by himself and allowing his own subortinates/surrogate family escape". I'm genuinely thinking Garp might die in a similar, even more hard-hitting way, to Whitebeard. I don't know, I'm just seeing all the death flags...

Like, even now 25 years later, with all this world building and built-up, it feels like the story hasn't even begun gearing up for the final confrontations.

I'm not sure. The situation is both similar, yet completely different. At Marineford, the Marines had EVERYONE there, including their biggest heavy hitters, and they were all at the ready. Here, you have an unprepared mass of lesser pirates and some of the titanic captains. At Marineford, Whitebeard had an entrance strategy, but no real plan. Here Garp and the others planned this all out and caught the pirates offguard. I think the titanic captains will get to showcase what they can do, but at worst, I see Garp getting an injury, probably from a stab in the back by Shiriu, but I don't see him dying here. Getting an injury that could later on spell his death in a fight with Blackbeard himself is more likely later down the line.

@@robertsilvermyst7325 Yeah, getting an injury that affects him further down the line sounds more plausable, altough I can't see Shiryu getting a hit in on Garp, even if he's distracted by fighting another BB commander. I know we're supposed to think of Shiryu as a real danger to Zoro (if we assume he'lll be his opponent), but he still hasn't shown he's worth it. Then again, if he does get a solid hit on Garp he'd have proven himself so I guess I destroyed my own argument...

I think it’s more about how important Koby is to GARP, as another grandson that’s been put in danger. He sat by while Ace died and it’s probably one of, if not, the biggest regret of his life. He won’t allow it to happen again, damn the marines and their orders.

Oda's really building up every faction he can right now, though the back to back breaks aren't fun for us SWORD's explanation was needed, using Aokiji to further suspicions he's a part of it too was clever, Tashigi was with the group though which is interesting, since she's never been confirmed as a member of SWORD (it's a shame she won't be in Egghead either, given her stake in the Punk Hazard children hinging on Vegapunk's survival and compliance) but that does make me worry for her too, I just hope she gets a bit of shine. Blackbeard's plan interests me, but in a curious way. He's already a Yonko why would he want the Government to recognize his pirate haven? We've seen such plans before with Doffy (Dressrosa), Crocodile (Project Utopia) and Kaido (New Onigashima), so what's different about this one? It feels like another 4D chess move from him, but we're missing a key piece of the puzzle as to why, what's his end goal? We have all fruits for Blackbeard's current crew somewhat confirmed, think Wolf and Burgess got a bad hand though, pretty generic powers really. What concerns me though is that none of them jumped into action when SWORD attacked, which means they're waiting for something perhaps even a trap of their own? There are some strong looking Devil Fruits from the SWORD members after all. So far Devon, Aokiji and Lafitte are the only Blackbeard Pirates unaccounted for in present time, all three could be going to Egghead sure but some may not, Devon may even pull the same trick twice and catch Perona out by using Absalom or Moria's body (because, I don't quite see a way out for Perona and Moria, Pizarro can feel movement on the island and SWORD aren't gonna just let them go), and the nature of Lafitte's powers is not entirely clear. As we saw with the Cover Story and Amazon Lily, the Blackbeard Pirates tend to go in pairs of sorts, but there's also the matter that Aokiji may not be the Tenth Titanic Captain. I do still think it's Aokiji who pulled up to Egghead though, this does make me more confident of it. Sticking with Perona, what if she's a high-commodity Devil Fruit they want? Like if Blackbeard is a 'them' and has more than one soul in his body, Blackbeard could use Perona's fruit to be both a ghost and have the other soul in him control his physical body. Wild theory of course but with some plausibility. Garp man, he is terrifying, like pulling some All Might energy in this chapter - they don't call him 'The Fist' for nothing. I get the annoyance though that this strength wasn't used in Marineford, since it felt like if Garp wanted to he could've easily saved Ace, but on the other hand Ace's death has perhaps motivated Garp into action a bit more. I still do fear something bad may happen, Garp's presence may force Blackbeard into coming back to Fullalead rather than Egghead (maybe giving Law a reprieve), but it just feels that SWORD are succeeding too easily in a Yonko's main territory. I also think about how interesting it is that Garp, despite being a Marine, feels like the teacher Luffy needs to break that ceiling of the old generation, if Luffy can get a similar level of impact as Garp can then he will be up there in that level, the problem is the pirate/marine divide. If anything, I feel like the Marines are gonna get a Pyrrhic victory; Koby escapes sure but at a big price. All factions right now are made to look strong (I feel like Cross Guild is next, their bounties were mentioned already and Koby's high God Usopp-esque bounty implies that they know he works for SWORD) so you can't just weaken Blackbeard's HQ by giving the marines even more buffs. In other news, Prince Grus' fruit is cool, being able to make clay golems, Hibari is using Vegapunk's flower creation for her main weapon, and the whip girl Kujaku - why explicitly state that she's Tsuru's granddaughter? Are we supposed to start thinking about her family? Also mentioning that they 'fixed' Rocky Port implies that Blackbeard owns the territory now, so how did Koby and Law fit into that mix? Also how did Garp's ship fly up to the island? Did Garp use Haki or did the Navy find a way to copy a Coup de Burst?

The parallel to Marineford is amazing. Garp, just like Luffy, flying through the air to save someone important to him, but I suspect that it will be very different. Luffy when all that took place was emotional, not smiling, in contrast Garp is. Garp is powerful and knows his strength. Luffy at that point was overestimating himself. Garp will save Coby, but may get captured instead. He will achieve his mission unlike Luffy at Marineford.

Admirals work directly under the control of the WG/Celestial Dragons. So I don’t think it works with any Admiral being Sword. They can’t do whatever they want, which is why Fujitora doing what he did in Dressrosa was an issue.

Garp for the longest time has been my favourite character, he is Luffy with the burden of responsibility and he is so complicated. It’s awesome!!! And to see him be this badass makes me so happy. When Oda talks about doing a story about Garp and Roger’s times as a sequel, I’ve always hoped Garp not Roger is the protagonist. How cool would it of been if Garp Knocked out Avalo with that punch. I mean, if Avalo can feel a slight tickle on his chest where the prisoners were running around, i can only imagine what he felt when Garp destroyed that town lol. I am 100% sure you are wrong concerning Garp being a sword member! he is too important to the WG and marines to be considered one. simply put, he is considered a legend and HERO amongst the people/mass, meaning the WG uses his face to control the mass. and the best argument I can provide if he REALLY was a sword member do you sincerely think Sengoku would be mad on Garp's actions since he can do whatever he wants and the WG would just cut ties with him? no way. it is really simple, Garp doesnt need to be a sword member to do whatever he wants. plus friendly remember that girl at the very early of the arc when Garp showed his plans to rescue Koby, She told Garp "did you get your orders from above?" if he was a sword member we all know how it would have went.

Sword is like Undercover Cops, by renouncing their Marine numbers they get to operate outside the law, like vigilantes, but are still cool with the Marines so may not get arrested for the “Good” they do as private citizens.

Concerning Garp, many are too optimistic that Garp will win, hell , some are already celebrating it but friendly reminder that this has been Oda-Sensei's style since ever! he ALWAYS makes his characters flex until he turns the table on them, which is what I am calling. Teech is a much more important card to save then Garp. I thought at first that Garp will die at first, but now, if Coby wont satisfy the WG to accept Teech's "dream" as he described, than a stronger card like Garp will 100% sure convince them (unless they betray him and thats sth I really wish) but lets be honest, would Garp accept being captured and be toyed by pirates? I think he would die than accepting it. but Majorly, the idea to capture Garp to negotiate with the WG is the best outcome and what I am calling the most!! but we will see =) P.S. I hate Garp, why ? I wrote it in another comment, but to be brief here, he was more heated to save coby than ace, and that hurts on a personal level, what triggered this (since I already hated him) was his words at the final and ending of the chapter, I was very disgusted.

My only concern with garp is he’s whitebeard and Rayleigh age. Rayleigh did put the fear of god in a yonko but he knew he couldn’t out last bb. Garp is old but looks to be in great shape unlike wb. I can see him surviving but having to take koby’s place. Once this happens the marines will disavow garp pissing koby off and making him ask luffy for help and triggering a god valley incident or Bb crew has the most destructive abilities and it’d be dope if they came up short on all 3 battle fields (law escapes, garp rescues koby, repelled from egghead). Therefore they decide to attack the world and rampage

This is exactly what I commented switch one hero of the marines for another and that plot thread can still continue but at a much larger scale. I think half the marines are going to disobey though and still go to save him and that'll make this a yonko crew, all of sword plus some other marines, maybe dragon and the revolutionares, possibly boa, maybe a few nations that either stand with garp, luffy, or even dragon, verses the blackbeard fleet and likely cross guild making this a world war and MF 2.0 but at the pirate headquarters now

OMG this chapter is LEGENDARY! finaly Some Garp hype flexing the biggest haki attack we seen in the series just with his 1st entrie... And now we know the black beard pirates who arrived in EGG head ! Lafitte Devon and Aokiji ! Since vasco shot and shiriu and pizarro and Sanjuan wolf stayed in island while Doc Q burges and Van augure are with black beard fighting law ! And for garp and Marineford this chapter explains alot ! That him didn't help ace is realy helping him it self since he could've destroyed whitebeard Allies just like that ! And it shows hiq growth not wanting to risk anymore of his love ones without acting and Sword it self is made for THIS !!! to act freely whitout Been chained by the High ups like he was in Marineford !!!

imagine saying that garp got his "growth" not wanting to risk his loves anymore to a person who took his retirement, who is old as Whitebeard was ... my point, do you think thats growth or regret ? do you think at age of +70 he learns such a basic rule in the One Piece world of "the hurtful feeling of losing someone you love"? you think this is his first loss of a beloved one ? thats capping with my respect to you. Ace didnt deserve such "grandpa" and for me, he can save the whole world, that would never bring salvation to what he did (duty over family) ESPECIALLY when you see how he went crazy over Coby. Like for me , his words at the end of the chapter, hurt me on a personal level. Where was all this determination to a boy you took care of ? to a friend's child you were entrusted to take care of ? Garp is definitely a hated character for me after all this.

Think about it, blackbeard brings up a plot thread about exchanging a hero of the marines for nation status and I doubt oda will just drop that thread within the same chapter showing coby about to get rescued so garp will likely get captured to switch out one hero of the marines for another and still go through with the plan, thus marineford 2.0 this time one at the pirate headquarters and this can attract everyone from luffy(a yonko), dragon(leader of the revolutionary), and the entirety of sword( if not the whole world govt themselves), and possibly several nations willing to either fight for garp or fight alongside luffy or dragon. the only problem is what does blackbeard have that could counter the entire world besides allying with former warlords like cross guild, i really hope he has an ancient weapon or knowledge of where one is so by the time the war starts he'll be ready to even things out making this both god valley and marineford 2.0.

Fujitora, I could see… Greenbull being Sword would be the most unexpected twist. I just don’t see it, not from how he’s been portrayed so far. A few thoughts... 1. One of the pirates made a statement to shoot Koby "fulla lead" which seemed like a callback to what the pirate island's original name is hinted (in a data book) to being: Fullalead Island, the home base of Rocks D. Xebec. 2. First point above is one of a few hints at Blackbeard having some kind of relation to Rocks. 3. Koby obviously did not get captured intentionally. Not only did he have no reason to think that Blackbeard would invade the island at that time that he did, but he also neither had reason to think that Blackbeard would spare his life, nor that Garp or the marines would try to save his life. 4. The person who started SWORD is most likely Akainu. It fits with his theme for justice. It's One Piece's version of a Black Ops division. 5. We have no reason to believe that SWORD existed during the Marineford War arc. We're not certain that X Drake joined Kaido's crew before Akainu became Fleet Admiral. 6. Ace was a known pirate who chose his path; Koby is a known marine. Garp had neither the means nor the reason to attempt to save Ace; he has both where Koby is concerned. So why did he want to kill Akainu? Because of how Ace was killed, not because Ace was killed. 7. We saw that Sanjuan Wolf's ability works even when he's in water. What remains to be seen is if his devil's fruit increases his strength as his size grows, such as what we see with Luffy. 8. Garp was hinted at having conqueror's haki by Don Chinjao. As of now, Garp and Sengoku are the only two marines confirmed to possess conqueror's haki. 9. As we've seen with the Beast Pirates, it's possible that some of Blackbeard's crew will be taken down before the Strawhat Pirates encounter them again, meaning not every strawhat may have a one-on-one battle. 10. Kuzan may not be a member of SWORD, but may instead be working directly under the Elder Gods. 11. And of course, we have no real reason to believe that Blackbeard himself is not on Egghead Island's shores. With the amount of hype the author is giving the events there, I personally think he is. But to think that he will be caught up in some drawn out battle with Law is peculiar.

Lots of governments historically have used sanctioned rogue units to do their dirty work so they can retain a sense of plausible deniability to keep the public on their side. It allows a gov to do more risky and aggressive moves with impunity. Russia has been doing it with the Wagner group since at least 2014.

I was highly criticized and even attacked personally after expressing my opinion on the following matter, but I will say i again here: After this chapter, I hated Garp more and more! like I just hate him. With Ace case, he was and felt lost, undecisive what to do, but for Coby? he was so clear and he shouted his emotions loudly, and I dont know about you, but at the end of the chapter, his words hurt me personally, he considers Coby more important than Ace. Like Garp take the piracy too seriously, as if his grandsons are low criminals killing innocent people, and all they are asking is just freedom. it made me really feel bad at the end of the chapter. I know people will say "but ace was captured by marines, and Coby by pirates" , I will just say excuses,, Garp is a D, and we all know how that Clan can be wild! yet Garp is a government dog you love it or hate it, not only he betrayed his clan, his grandson but as well Roger's will of guaranteeing at least the safety of his son. (and please do NOT compare real world with One piece world, being a piirate in this world and in one piece is toadally different)

Now that we know what it means to be a part of Sword and the fact that Tashigi is with Garp. It all but confirms for me that if Smoker isn’t already a member of Sword than he will be in the future. It also sinks the idea of Smoker joining the straw hats because him being a Sword member accomplishes the same goal for his character and fits better in my opinion. Also I hope Tashigi got Monet’s Yuki Yuki No Mii because that girl needs a buff and she has the perfect logia teacher in Smoker.

Putting strong marines into sword solves the problem of not seeing them during the marine fort battle. Fujitora and Greenbull would stand out with their abilities, no matter where they fight. Devon on Egghead is the biggest threat ever. She could transform into a Vegapunk or the Elder himself, giving the Blackbeard pirates control over the Seraphims and replace the Elder, beeing the ultimate spy.
