It Happened! Something Bad Is Happening With NASA Artemis. SpaceX to Save...
NASA's efforts to return astronauts to the Moon's surface and build a space station orbiting the Moon have just become even more costly.
Recently, a report revealed that the estimated cost of NASA's launch tower has skyrocketed to nearly $3 billion. This new figure is even close to the entire cost of developing the Starship program up to this point!
So, why did the costs increase to such an insane amount? And how did Elon Musk react?
Let’s find out on today’s episode of Alpha Tech:
It Happened! Something Bad Is Happening With NASA Artemis. SpaceX to Save...
Nasa's massive Space Launch System (SLS), a rocket designed to send the Orion spacecraft to the Moon, will need an entirely separate launch tower, called Mobile Launcher 2, starting with Artemis IV.
This is because that mission is designed to kick off the construction of NASA's Lunar Gateway space station, an outpost in lunar orbit, no earlier than September 2028. The additional launch mass means NASA will need an even more powerful variant of its already enormous SLS-and a stronger launch platform.
Building this tower won’t be cheap; NASA estimates it will cost up to $1.8 billion and will be completed by September 2027. Now, according to a new harsh report from NASA's Office of Inspector General (OIG), this tower could end up being much more expensive than initially expected. The office predicts that the 'total cost could reach $2.7 billion'-a bewildering figure that could significantly undermine NASA's ongoing efforts to establish a more permanent presence on and around the Moon.
It Happened! Something Bad Is Happening With NASA Artemis. SpaceX to Save...
OMG! No one wasn't surprised by this enormous number! Elon Musk, the head of SpaceX, with his large and small projects, even exclaimed, 'Holy smokes!' under a post about NASA's launch tower. Because, in reality, Elon Musk personally, for his space company and the entire trend of the current space industry, is moving towards the goal of reducing costs, making space exploration no longer considered a luxury.
With $2.7 billion in hand, you could do incredible things for SpaceX's services. Imagine renting 43 Falcon 9 rockets, each costing $62 million, to send a total of 762 tons of cargo into orbit. More interestingly, this mass is nearly 1/5 the weight of the launch tower itself! With an equivalent cost, we could even dream of sending the entire tower into space, skipping the intermediate steps.

An elephant is a mouse designed by NASA contractors. The General Accounting Office needs to take a hard look at NASA. There's way too much pork there. Space launch system is nothing more than a rocket built out of junkyard parts.

The SLS system was a dumb idea to begin with. If it was supposed to save money by reusing components like old shuttle engines, what happens once they're gone? Gonna cost tons extra to manufacture new ones. Stupid idea to save money.

Meanwhile, SpaceX builds TWO towers in a couple of years, at less than $150 million per tower. The difference in how these projects are managed is profound, and in my opinion further underscores why an Agile approach to project management is a far superior methodology.

Cancel SLS and associated projects ASAP. NASA, save some money. Give the workers other projects. Let SpaceX proceed with Falcon Heavy. Certify it for manned flights to the moon. Save some of the Starships planned for Mars missions in 2026 for the moon. Please!

Yeah well what do you expect when the guy in charge of NASA is a country singer, that's even worse than Bozo trying to look like he knew what he was saying to the Everyday Astronaut when he was shown round that supposed rocket facility which has NO DUST or even people working haha, yet when he did the SpaceX tour with Elon, it's EASY to see the difference with Elon still being head of engineering and design as he has been since he built the first rocket engine and now with his amazing team at SpaceX and especially Gwynne who took a chance when Elon asked her at the beginning,it's incredible how much tech they've all created since they said he was insane and ridiculed him to try and return rockets and land them for reuse, what a bunch of incompetent losers haha 🤔🚀🚀😲🍾🎉😂😂

The thing that gets me most about this new moon landing, is the time it is taking. It was only 8 years after Kennedy said we would land on the moon 1961, we had a man on the moon by 1969.

Well Bill not this time they are taking NASA to the cleaners you need to think this through. You need to have that fixed pricing so that they will stay on track and also they need workers there every day with out fail. They don't need to keep on milking it out. One other thing you might want SpaceX to look at the blue prints and check out the reasons why they are not working.

If NASA is going the private route, then the private sector should foot the bill. Would you fund the development of an aircraft and have the corporation make profit from private sales of an aircraft you paid to develop? Musk is doing just that! Paying for the development of starship.

That is the lowest IQ comment I have read in a while. Your envy/greed has blinded you. NASA doing it means: NASA has less money because of the expense of Artemis less money to spend on other space equipment. Also, withholding contracts from SpaceX means they have less money to advance their mission to explore the cosmos “first Mars and then the Stars.” You basically hate human advancement and space exploration.

The Gateway is a crutch for an overpriced, under performing rocket that cannot match the flight capabilities of a 55+ year old Saturn V. Artemis needs a station, and a Starship to help it's bloated ass get to the moon and back.

Well it has only been under development since 2016, (with the exception of the raptor engine) having a cost of 6 billion so far, that includes EVERYTHING even infrastructure required to launch, build and refurbish the rocket. Meanwhile the SLS has been under development since 2011, costing 11.8 billion (for the BLOCK 1 SLS only), this means the SLS 2 cost will get added to that AND no infrastructure is include in this price. so far and having only 1 succefull launch. Also this is ignoring that many components from the SLS are recycled from older craft like the space shuttle wich should have brought the cost down and that the SLS is not a reusable design. Starship will probably start flying commercially next year with a development cost of less than 10 billion and a fully reusable setup, wich means the starship will get more cargo for cheaper in orbit, AND MORE FREQUENTLY.
