I’m glad they’re showing how Moirane’s pathological refusal to ever tell anyone anything they don’t absolutely need to know until the last possible minute is both a tactical decision and a character flaw. In so many ways in the first few books, Moirane’s tight lipped nature sabotages her own plans, because it means even her closest allies, let alone the Emmon’s Fielders, don’t ever fully trust her. I feel as though she, and many other Aes Sedai, get so caught up in their own cleverness and power that they forget it’s possible to have a relationship with someone that isn’t either manipulative or coercive.
@paulkelly2701

This can be repaired but in one of two ways. One, they could have her let go of what looks to me like paranoid delusions of being attacked at all times. This results from the very precipitous stilling which would make anybody fear everything everywhere at all times. this is what I think we're seeing in her. Given she has wasted a lot of screentime sparring with her sister, that would have been much more worthy to have been her sister consoling her. They grew up together and while it was 60 years ago, they would both know the moves. Anvaere should have been able to see how deeply maimed Moriaine is and how deeply she needs help in dealing with her loss. Instead, she was, well, nasty (and it made E4 a total mess). Ok, that ship sailed. Now, Moiraine has to do the letting go herself. Book Moiraine would have sat herself down and gotten the reprimanding done. That's what needs to happen now. We need human Moiraine again.
@ninnusridhar
@ninnusridhar Жыл бұрын
The unfortunate thing is moiraines nature comes from a very real paranoia. New spring sets up her wariness about darkfriends being absolutely anyone. So how can she trust anyone who is not her. Even siuan maybe a darkfriend, so what about anvaere or barthanes. It's what makes the wheel of time and moiraine so great imo. That sense of absolute paranoia
@paulkelly2701

@@ninnusridhar Well bethought. That said, the prequel was written with much of the main series already complete. We really do have to take the first books at face value and her paranoia did not reach the kids, all of whom she basically trusted intrinsically. Her main conflict bookly was that they increasingly refused to trust her and that came from prejudice built into them from childhood tales. They really believed that AS do things for Machiavellian purposes much of which would always work to the detriment of everybody else. It was the same kind of bigotry directed at the Tuatha'An and for many of the same reasons.

Haven't read the books, so I don't know if this a "correct" take, but anyway: Something that stuck out to me about the sul'dam character which I don't know if it was intended, but it added another layer of horror for me: to me, she didn't come off as classicaly manupulative, but genuine in a fucked up way. When she snapped and started kicking Egwene at the end, I saw it as her being offended at how "ungrateful" Egwene was being to how "gently" she was breaking her spirit. Her acting out of what she honestly percieved as mercy and kindness made the whole thing feel all the more fucked up. Villains who do horrible things while still showcasing some sort of twisted emotional intelligence are terrifying.
@jessicahojo7682
@jessicahojo7682 Жыл бұрын
That's exactly how it was intended and she did an amazing job. Only difference from the books is that she used the Adam for the pain because to harm the property of one of the blood would be a death sentence for herself. They wouldn't physically damage a damame physically, but considering how challenging that would be to show the sensations versus smacking her around, I think we all can forgive that adjustment for the medium. But yes suldam do not do as they do out of sadism. They have been convinced it is the right/proper/true way and having women with that much power without someone to control it would be disastrous. So they employ it for the empire and if they control all the channelers no one would have the power to stand against them. So for the blood/power it makes two fold sense. Mitigate potential threats/wild cards and grow your own power simultaneously. Win win for Sanchean. Only sucks to be born with the spark and be able to channel.

@@jessicahojo7682One thing I can add to what you said, is that the Seanchan don't see damane's as persons. They see them more as dangerous animals. So in fact, I felt the sul'dam treated Egwene too gentle. She treated Egwene as a person, while she should have treated her as an animal. I do agree with what you said about using the a'dam for torture. I didn't like it while I was watching it. But I agree that it would be difficult to show such torture in a TV show. My interpretation was that Rand may have initially subconsciously seized the One Power, but then surrendered and let it slip through his fingers so to speak, hence his failure to control the weaves in previous episodes. Logain could be referring to this. Additionally though, Logain dropping in the word ‘surrendering’ here does, at the very least, help to simplify the difference in how to embrace Saidin / Saidar for show-only watchers, and sometimes you need to simplify for a visual medium, much like how a Gentled Logain shouldn’t really be able to see Rand embrace the source in the first place.

We are given plenty of information throughout the books that Elayne was terribly sheltered and that as far as "friends" she had no one but "acquaintances". The Royal family on Andor is her world. We are given multiple glimpses of how she was not allowed to do certain things only because she is the Daughter Heir. Part of the allure of Rand when he fell over the wall was the simple fact that he was a stranger. She is so starved for outside contact that she is immediately enraptured with him. Go back and read it. BTW Lanfear created an Ishy to use as a foil to show how she was on Rand's side and protecting him. The fact that he dissolved without even a little struggle proves it. Natasha O'keeffe is KILLING it. Then again, I love scenery-chewing villains, like Raul Julia as Bison in Street Fighter. Villains who revel in being the villain (rather than just being *evil*) are great :) I also think Lanfear made a fake Ishy in that Tel'aran'rhiod scene to make it that much easier to show that she's "protecting" Rand from him (as well as her being a master of TAR, though that means when they introduce the TRUE queen of TAR, Moghedien, they'll have to let her actress really have fun being unhinged).

This was the episode which finally turned my feelings around and made me like what I see. I realized my problem wasn't the fact that we are way too far from following the books, it's not impossible to like something so different, but if I'm being honest, most of the time I think I was just simply bored out of my mind. Not anymore though if it continues like this. I was so impressed by most of the episode, the actors/actresses knocked it out of the park, amazing job. I want to throw a thousand awards at Madeleine, I honestly don't know how she did it, but she did it and it was flawless. I will always miss Barney as Mat, nothing can change that but it warms my heart to see that Dónal Finn has all the charm that needed to embrace this role. He will do AMAZING.

It is definitely possible to like something different. My problem has never been they were doing something different. My problem has always been everything different they are doing is worse in every way from what Jordan gave us. If you're going to have the hubris to do an iconic work "different" you dang well better make it just as good, if not better. It's no coincidence that your feelings happened to "turn around" in an episode in which the best scenes were ones that was pretty darn book accurate. I imagine feelings would have turned around a lot sooner had we had Perrin saving Egwene from the Whitecloacks and the struggle with taking a life in season one. Or Mat's iconic scene besting Galad and Gawyn with a quarterstaff while still reeling from the effects of the dagger. Or Thom thrusting his bundle with the harp and flute at Mat and Rand and taking on a Fade in Whitebridge. It's just a shame they throw away so much of the actor's talents. Mat is a perfect example. We finally had a chance to see him develop and grow with Rand (they did in the books a lot on the way to Tar Valon), and then they did him dirty by having him "ditch his friends" AGAIN.

ye man i'm with you, I never had a problem with them telling an original story, like you can never perfectly adapt between mediums etc etc., but the first season was just totally UNFOCUSED; rushed in some places, IMPOSSIBLY slow in others; this season has been such a meteoric improvement on damn near every front. Oh also this season is so good that it got me to go back and rewatch se1; gotta say, there WERE definitely some standout scenes in that season, they were just spread very thin amidst a bunch of gunk. The show is really starting to flex some muscle now, and if it can maintain this level of quality, I think we'll start to get some really great word of mouth going!

This tells you all you need to know about how good this episode was: I'm watching the series with my Son who's not read the books. I'm trying my hardest to keep quiet and not spoil anything (in fact I refuse to spoil anything for him, party because I never know if the show will hold to the plot/character development from the books). Anyway, he loved episode 5 and starting to learn what the Foresaken are and that they're next level above the Aes Sadai, but at the end of Episode 6 he just turned to me and said "Have they signed up season 3 yet?" It says it all. That episode moved things from "Ok this is cool watching an ok show with my Dad, cos I know he loves it so much and it must be good" to "I want more of this, much more of it!" Egwene's scenes were obviously outstanding, but I have to say I'm loving Lanfear. Natasha O'Keefe has smashed it. Her casual confidence with the power is exactly what a Foresaken should be like. Wow, wow, wow. Lets hope the show continues on this upward arc, or at least maintains this level - that would be fine actually. Just keep delivering like this!

Loved the Ogier song. It was not how I imagined it in the books: it was much better. When the seanchan first commanded Loial to sing I was sure it would be a demeaning scene for him, but instead, it was a powerful display of alien magic. I thought that was why Suroth abruptly asked him to stop. Not because she was "not the center of attention" but because she felt the change in the atmosphere. The seanchan all started to look uncomfortable as Loial sang. I think that on some level they realized almost instinctively that they were making light of something ancient and sacred.

My thoughts: Lan: He definitely feels like the character most drastically altered to allow for the other characters story lines, which like, we all LOVE Lan, but I can see how if you have to sacrifice a main crew to narrative he'd probably be the most logical one. It still leaves plenty of space for his big moments later. Elayne: I don't think we ever get much pre-story Elayne life, but I could easily be wrong. I took at it as yeah she has friends, but Egwene is the first person she met where El is like, oh your my subject, and Eggy is like, oh, well you're the subject of my disdain XD aka Elayne's first true friend. Trauma bonding is a huge theme and Eggy is almost certainly the first person Elayne has trauma bonded with. Mat: I really liked the Mat and Rand reunion, felt very Mat, the other parts made sense but it was hard to say how "true" it felt, which so little time on the show. Lanfear: Perfect (I would also sit in a box for thousands of years for shirtless Rand 🤤) Perfect moment in the dream where she's like I'll show you anyone, he's thinking, we cut back to Lanfear and (at least with book knowledge) you KNOW she KNOWS he's about to pic a woman and that woman is gonna be on the hit list lmao. Fantastically done scene for readers. Logain: Hard to compare to books since he's in such a different place, but I liked that this was probably the most direct (non-animated) mention of male and female access to the power being different. I've seen a lot of things saying like oh, Rand was surrendering to the source, he couldn't even touch it that way, but I personally took it as he was still grabbing it, it was just a weak hold, he held it but let the source do as it willed and almost control him, but then Logain gives the very book cannon, no, you must *grip* it and then suddenly homeboy gets so much taint at once he vomits. Also loved that Rand turned it from to night to brighter than day, great touch. Egwene: I said perfect before but that was but a temporary shadow in Tel'aran'rhiod to Egwene's scenes and performance here. Probably the most accurate series of sequences in the series so far and OMG Maddy had the BEST performance in the entire series. Like, we might have to wait a few seasons for there even to be a scene strong enough to have a performance that could compare. Nynaeve: Also doing great and embodying her character. I'm on ~54 of Fire of Heavens on my re-listen so seeing the seeds of Nyn and Elayne bickering was nice XD Can't believe I'm saying 8.5 out of 10 seems too low for me XD Legit 10/10 in my book (hehe). Still a few things could be better but I'm not one to say you can't ever be perfect so 10's don't exist.

I feel the same about Egwene. Much like some people don’t like what Sanderson did with Mat, I don’t like what Sanderson did with Egwene in terms of certain personality traits (her overall arc was spectacular). But I remember thinking in the latter books that Egwene was almost regressively petty in some ways despite all the torture and Aiel training and white tower stuff. Anyway I hope we get her same amazing character arc minus the layer of pettiness that crept in at the end with Sanderson’s writing that didn’t match the experience and wisdom she’d gained from everything else!

@Ceej474 it's strange how different people see different characters. I think a lot of the reason people dont mention Egwene when talking about characters Sanderson struggled with is because a lot of people (myself included) thought Egwene was always that childish and petty so we don't see regression in the character like you do. They definitely had to get thrown against a wall. They were in hostile territory, everyone was looking for them, and Basan's only other options were to try to grab them and risk them channeling, or trying to convince them he wasn't a threat while they were exposed in the street. I’m so excited but really nervous about these last two episodes… even though I didn’t hate the final two episodes of season 1 as many book readers did. There was so much that could have been better, and I feel that the future success and continuation of the series depends upon them really nailing this season 2 finale. 😳

The next episode is going to be heavy on Suian/Rand/Moraine interactions and Egwene rescue. So Falme is going to be just the final episode. Mirroring GOT...slow buildup to a big action episode.

A reason I really like the scenes with Nynaeve and the Yellow Aes Sedai is that it comes right after Nynaeve was betrayed by Liandrin, who I think she was starting to look up to somewhat as a role model, and gives her someone else to respect as an Aes Sedai, which will inform her character arc further down the road in terms of the books. Also, welcome to Massachusetts!

Incredible episode, wow, Egwene's story line, that torture, interaction, one can feel her pain, anger and despair, amazing acting. This season, this is some fresh unrecognizable show getting better with every new episode. p.s. 11:50 Exactly, spot on, amazing casting! Natasha O'Keeffe as Selen/Lanfear and Fares Fares as Ishamael are incredible, no other words to describe it but - they hypnotize me when on screen. Everyone is doing great, not only major roles but other ones too, for example Basan and Ryma Sedai (Yellow Ajah), especially that scene of despair when Basan is killed and she captured, oh my god, than that pure sadistic evil of that sul`dam Renna, god help us, than every interactions in Moiraine`s family, her sister, and so on, so on, just great acting overall.

I really love the complexity and diversity they are showing with the One Power and this episode hits it harder than the others. This is so crucial to making this WOT and not random magic powers of energy blasts like in Harry Potter movies. The yellow Aes Sedai twists her healing weaves she knows so well to become weapons because that is what she knows. The damane shoots a blade of air/spirit because the damane are weapons. Lanfear exploded someone's head previously because she is a ruthless Forsaken. This needs to be highlighted in your videos because this sort of detailing makes this WOT

Let the haters, hate, Daniel. I found your channel because you were one of the only people willing to give the show a chance once it became apparent that it is not going to be letter-true to the story from the books. I share many of your concerns and criticisms of the show. I also share many of the things you get excited about. People who shit on content creators like you for being a true critic instead of fanboy enslaved to the text can go take a long walk off of a short cliff. In the meantime, I'll keep tuning in to the reviews. Well done!

Agree with everything you said! I'm particularly pleased with how they are making the weaves I wish they had more colors for some of the complex ones but when she was breaking the sul'dam body the visual of the weaves in her hand looked really intricate. I also loved how when Rand was embracing saidin in there was touches of black which I thought represented the taint. I hope they continue to build on the visual complexity of weaves throughout the show.

Some of my biggest highlights from this episode: “Ishy dear” Egwene not returning the Sul’dam ‘affinity’/affection after setting the tree on fire and seeing that strange mix of emotions play out between them When Egwene wakes up thinking Rand is there and then doubting her sanity Lanfear belittling and manipulating Liandrin Loial singing Rand and Mat!!! And Mat making light fun of him with his short hair and Dragon Reborn grandeur When Rhyma Sedai calls Nynaeve Sister When Rand pleads with Lanfear for knowledge of Egwene Siuan batting Liandrin away with a comment about frivolity Elayne and Nynaeve holding hands as Rhyma gets captured Very excited for next week !

I felt the exact same way. I am so happy to finally be looking forward to next weeks episode with extreme anticipation. The series is getting better with each episode and I hope it continues. I can't deal with another debacle like the last few episodes of season 1. The actors are killing it this season, and that's how it should be with such amazing characters.

Welcome to Boston. A couple of useful tips: find a Market Basket for your groceries. Even if you have to travel a little, it will save you a ton of money over time. When you go to the North End for dinner (which it is a given you should do) skip Mike's pastries and go to Bovas on the next street over. Other tips depend on the area you are living in. Feel free you reach out if you want any other tips (I am an Uber Driver so I get around to lots of areas)

Ohhh welcome home!! 😍😍 Bostons totally the place to be! Haha I’m so glad you’re enjoying the show now! I’ve really loved the whole thing. I read the books after episode 6 of season 1 so my outlook is a bit different I think! Haha but I love both and really think the characters and overall arcs are going to match up really well, even when the exact details are different. The only compliant I would have is I wish they had more time (cough Amazon cough) and more focus on Rand. Because Rand is the best😍 I’m just waiting for his big moment! Haha the build up is killing me.

Thanks for another great episode review. I appreciate that when you don’t love something from the episode, you offer suggestions of how it could have been done instead to keep true to the book while still working for the changes they’ve done with the show. Too many reviews simply complain without context.

I think this season started off a bit rocky, but it’s been mostly been progressing and I’ve been really enjoying it. The only issues I have been having is the editing. Since episode 4, I’ve noticed some BAD editing in some parts, especially with the cuts between actors, and it keeps taking me out. Aside from this though, I’ve still enjoyed this season overall and it’s definitely an improvement over the first ( coming from someone who actually thought the first season was okay).

Love your reviews Daniel! I am SUPER amazed you did not refer to the one line Egwene drops, to which I had man tears run down my cheeks with, and stood up to clap for- “No woman can have power with a collar around her neck.” As we know, this is the driving force for her character to do SOOO much later on… and this line sets it up beautifully!
