I think for Elle, (A) She used to Tao treating her like her, and then he starts treating her like a stranger who he’s trying to impress by not being himself and (B) she wants them to be together, but she doesn’t want Tao to put her on a pedestal - she wants him to like her for herself as she is, not as an idealized version of herself. I think Tao is very much a cinema-informed romantic, but Elle has the artist’s appreciation for mundane and ordinary things. So with this movie thing, Tao treats Elle like a girl who he can pretend to like the same things as in order to gain her favour. But it comes across as inauthentic to Elle, who already knows Tao hates the movie. So instead of just enjoying a movie she likes, she has to sit there worried about him not having fun or worse, faking enjoyment for her. I think she’s kind of takes it personally. No right and wrong - I see both perspectives definitely and it’s one of the things I love about the show is you can usually pick it apart and see right and wrong on both sides.

Yeah but also rememeber Elle decided to keep some distance from Tao and push him away and that made Tao try extra hard, and Elle did that because she felt Tao was not interested, so in the end it's a self-fulfilling prophecy, no one is at fault, but Elle is Tao's best friend, she knows how he feels when he loses his friends, I find it strange she didn't realize that's why he was trying so hard, but I guess she was laser focused on not losing the friendship, no one is at fault, but I feel the same way as Elijah, Elle definitely frustrated me this episode

We have to give Elle a break regarding the date and her reaction to Tao. Each character has their thing that triggers them, and Elle's is change - as she's said "I've had to deal with enough changes in my life lately." So having Tao 'change' himself for their date was too much for Elle to deal with. This is why she had such a reserved reaction to Tao when he first asked her out (haircut, new look), and Tao's over the top behavior at the cinema (which was illustrated by the exaggerated sizes of popcorn and nachos).

I agree but at the same time Tao was stressing himself out trying to impress Elle. He didn’t change himself to upset her he just was trying to show he was serious about his feelings for her. I still feel Elle was too harsh, Tao didn’t upset her on purpose and if she had given him a chance to explain he could have said how he was feeling. I understand change is overwhelming it is for me too, but Tao didn’t deserve that reaction he wasn’t a jerk to her. Also all he did was just get a hair cut he didn’t change himself that much.

Side note that I think people are forgetting about when it comes to Charlie’s school work is that he is canonically depressed. They haven’t really emphasized it that much in this show yet but in the graphic novels he was going through depression when he was getting bullied and depression doesn’t just go away just because the bullying has stopped and you have a wonderful boyfriend now. So with all of that being said when you are dealing with depression starting school work or just any type of work is impossible. That’s why he finds it hard to do it even if he is good at school. He just wants to focus on things that makes him happy like his friends and boyfriend not on school so he doesn’t fall into that depression spiral again. I don’t want to spoil anything so that’s all I’ll say on that topic.

I think neither Tao and Elle are wrong. He did his best to make the date fun and he didn’t understand what went wrong. He put her on a pedestal instead of thinking of Elle as the girl he knows and cares about. Elle feels like the guy she liked disappeared. I’d be so uncomfortable if my partner set up a date full of things he didn’t like, even if they were my favourite things. I’d not be able to relax and I’d be worried about him not having a good time. Coupled with his nerves making him act differently and her not having that context because she’s a teenage girl and she’s still learning the socialisation rules (especially as a girl/woman, when previously she was socialised as a boy).

so Nick and Charlie are very obviously a couple to almost anybody who pays even a little bit of attention. his rugby friends know they are (well, maybe not Harry). i wrote about my own experience of the way i came out which was just not caring that people knew i had boyfriends and it didn't involve some hand wringing confession. i think that's a valid way too, and honestly in the perfect world is the way it should be. frankly if Nick and Charlie just leaned into their obviously being a couple it would take a lot of pressure off of Nick.
