The implications for Anbennar would be really cool. In the Lore, Centaurs invaded the Lake Federation during the winter over frozen ice and wrecked havoc.

I like the way this makes areas with a lot of winter become inherently less productive than areas that have shorter/milder winters. More properly modelled differences like this rather than modifiers like “-30% construction: harsh winters” is always a win! I guess my ideal model would be some sort of seasonal temperature system, so instead of just modelling winters, it would allow effects to construction, etc for ridiculously hot areas

This all sounds nice, but I do hope there's something similar for the oppressive heat/humidity of equatorial location too. It's not like these places are perfect places to grow food/work simply because it never snows there.

The Napoleonic battle on ice you were thinking of was the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, considered Napoleon's greatest moment of tactical genius, and one of the most consequential battles of the entire Napoleonic Era, leading within the month to French victory over Austria in the War of the Third Coalition and the peace treaty which utterly neutered the Holy Roman Empire and directly caused Francis II to dissolve it in 1806.

it would be cool if lets say you own a location on the opposite side of a mountain pass, and a severe winter closes the pass that the control level in the province on the other side would drop to near zero for the duration of the winter.

There were also two ducth battles that happened on ice. The Battle on Skates in 1572 (located somewhere in the IJsselmeer (largest manmade lake of the netherlands) - here the dutch won against the Spanish by using iceskates and the capture of the dutch fleet by the french during the war of the first coalition in 1795, whereby a part of the dutch fleet was frozen in place by the severe winter.

Tangentally, I think that this makes map changing on zoom more likely (was already almost certainly a thing), just because they are going to want to show the seas frozen visually rather than making players click on every sea tile to check if it is currently frozen.

This is really cool that they're giving winter serious effects, in other Paradox titles like hearts of iron 4 winter is just a modifier that you don't even realize is there, the fact that it will fundamentally change the map and paths you can take I think is really cool and will make winter something players plan for and actively have to think about

While it does sound heavy recalcing winter for every location every day, i think i heard the engine does lots of that kind of shit already anyways and that's why savefile sizes are so bloated. But maybe that was a lie and that is indeed really bad. Oh well Also that whole freezing thing, while cool, might be extremely annoying. I hope they'll have alerts or smth when your army goes through an ice that MIGHT melt soon or navy goes through waters that MIGHT freeze soon. And hopefully pathfinding accounts for that as well maybe somewhat

I would really like to see the building screen tell you why the building is stalled. I understand looking at it and its mid January, oh yeah it's winter. But I assume buildings can stall due to at least material shortage as well. So it would be nice to just include that there. Perhaps it is and you have to hover over it? This is insane though. Also ahh yes I remember learning in history class. England and France were gearing up for a very long war... perhaps even a century long one. But a devastatingly brutal winter in 1341 froze the English channel and France marched across the channel and burned London to the ground, ending the war and unifying the two crowns under France. History be crazy.

I think that winter calculation is going to be very fast compared to everything else the game does, and you wouldn't even notice a speed difference if you turned it off. A modern computer can iterate over an array of 25000 elements and do some simple math or logic operations on each much faster than a millisecond. The logic for this can't be very complicated. You can also assume there are some quick early escapes like "is it summer?" or "is it tropical?" that skips some of the other logic. What I think probably scales much worse with the amount of provinces are all the pops and buildings (multiple per province), their consumption, results if they are not satisfied, and resulting market imports/exports, even if it is recomputed on a longer time scale (I don't remember what they said about it), and even that they say runs fine.

I hope this doesnt lead to Mediterranean europe having a perma-buff advantage over the temperate regions in central and western europe. I wonder how technology in particular may effect this. Intensive agriculture, better building methods like red bricks and chimneystacks, etc. May negate some of the harsher effects. Additionally, I'd hope to see the inverse of thus feature modeled in equatorial regions of the world, where heatwaves can be so oppresively hot as to prevent any safe labor outdoors.

@Shayrin2 perhaps in the time period before this game. After the end of the Renaissance productivity in Central in Northern Europe spiked with various inventions, introductions of new crops better suited to cold environments, etc. At the beginning of the game time the most productive per capita regions are italy and central China (if I recall correctly) and by game end it is most certainly Britain, Northern France and the Low Countries.
