So, a bit of context that might not have come across towards the end. When Lena made it to the memorial, she almost certainly knew they were dead because even though their names weren't on the stone, all of their machines were there, and she knew based off descriptions what their marks all looked like (aside from Shin's), and they were all arranged so their marks could be seen. The personnel roster she was given by the Federacy was incomplete, and had several names [REDACTED] among them being the 86 groups at the top. This was a VERY intentional troll by the Federacy on Lena because they wanted the fact that her old group was still alive to be a surprise for her to get her reaction (which is why they had them meet at the memorial). Lena didn't immediately recognize them but, as soon as they started talking, she did (aside from Shin) because they all said something pertaining to the letter they left behind. Also to wrap it up, this is more of a translation thing regarding the last song but, if you watch the Fido scene at the end with Subbed music (its on YT somewhere) the ED actually follows the events EX. ""I am at a loss for words. I stare at you, eye to eye" lines up with the scene after he tells her his name, and she is crying but doesnt close her eyes.

Also, all the names on the memorial are taken from the "dog tags" Shin was making from their Juggernauts, so their names missing doesnt necessarily mean they survived but that they all died before Shin could make the dog tags. A special shout out to Cyclops/Shiden for not saying anything, for months, even tho she was aware that at least Shin survived.

I love that the president kept it a surprise for Lena. They intentionally kept info minimal just to get that moment. Made this reunion 10x better. Being called "Handler One" by Shin should have been a dead giveaway but she was probably in disbelief the whole time. What an ending. Endings are a hit-or-miss and this this episode is one of the best in anime.

Trust when I say you hope this gets another season. This season only adapted volume 1-3 of the LNs out of 13 , and there’s so much more to expand upon. But this ending was definitely satisfying in its own way too.

Anime adapts pretty much prologue of the story. Originally author wrote part that you see in the anime for a writing competition but decided to continue the story after how well it was received. It's one of those rare gems that doesn't drop in quality ever and each volume is somehow better than the last so I can't wait for when they continue adapting it especially given how good the adaptation was.

This is the combination of a really source material and awesome directing work. The ending is so good that even if it ended right here it still be satisfying for the viewers, but all of these are only vol 1-3 out of total 13 LN volumns, and the story actually does get better as of later volumn.

All the little details make ot perfect...Theo getting colored pencils to draw with, before he always has just a regular pencil drawing black/white pictures. Anju is now making meals not JUST desert. Shin who was bad at cooking, learning to cook with Frederica. FYI, Sawano dropped the OST used during the Shin/Lena meeting the day this episode aired. It is called LilaS, many fans believe that LilaS actually stands for"Lena is looking ay Shin". This scene always gets me. Shin trying to hold back his own emotions, blinking back tears and then his sweet smile with the softest eyes we have ever seen on him. Love, love 86!

I don't think any other show makes me cry as hard and as often. It's also one of the few shows that makes me feel content with how everything is wrapped up. Our babies came so far. The 86 group learning to process and cope with loss, survivor's guilt, finding a purpose, and finding themselves. Lena letting her humanity turn her into a kind, caring badass who people actually respect and want to follow. I'm so happy they have a home and freedom, and most of all: each other.

Also: There is a LOT more content they could cover--this season of the anime covered the events of the first three light novels, but there are currently a total of 13 of them, so this is really just the beginning of the story. A-1 is busy producing a bunch of other stuff right now, but I think it's likely they will do at least one more season (if not more) once their schedule opens up.

It's so funny to me that Ernst sets up Lena to think they are dead before ambush surprising her with them. Their names wouldn't be on the memorial because they all "died together" and Shin carved the names onto the back of the ones who died's marks so Giad wouldn't know our 5, their Juggernauts would be their symbol. Fido being there cements that it's them. He gives her a redacted staff list so she can't see their names in her squad .......what an absolutely lovely maniac he is.

What I though the uncle meant when he said to Lena "That I will buy some time" was that he went to kill the upper ranking officers that were delaying any real plans to defend. I always had the thought he went to take them out as they were the problem for having any change. At that scene too there was announcement for all officers to gather in one place, so that is why my thought process went to on what the uncle meant. If he killed all the upper officers Lena would have had much free hand to be the highest ranking officer to direct emergency defensive actions without the corrupt generals trying to stop her. PS. It's pretty much 100% that season 2 will come out, but think maybe 2026.

Wasn't her uncle the highest ranked officer, or among the highest ranked? Anyway, he definitely didn't go off and murder his own people. Pretty sure he went to lead forces that would hold off Legion until Lena could get her 86 forces in position (hence buying time)

And you wouldn't think those same officers that were so corrupted wouldn't have hampered Lena's last ditch efforts to survive, that is where my speculation went with his uncle's "I will buy you time" last message to her.

After the first volume was published, the series got picked up to become serialized. It was written like this in case the light novels were going to be axed by Volume 3 (a lot of LNs get cancelled early). I can see what Kadokawa was up to: they wanted to see how sales of Volume 2 went before authorizing anything further than Volume 3. If Volume 2 had failed to sell well, the third volume would have been the finale. It wouldn't be hard, all the writer would have to do is remove any mentions of No-Face and make Kiriya the controlling intelligence behind the Legion and the story would have ended there.
