‘It keeps me awake at night’ - how the cost of living crisis is affecting everyday life

A dire warning - if one was needed - from the investment bank Citi.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
It's predicting inflation could soar above 18% by the start of next year - pushed up by the spiralling cost of energy.
Ofgem are to announce the October price cap later this week.
Household bills are likely to hit more than £3,500, and by next April they could be closer to £6,000.
No surprise then, that ordinary people - unlike politicians, aren't waiting around to take action - they're already changing their way of life to save money.
Eating sandwiches rather than proper meals. Using the microwave instead of the oven - or simply choosing tins over fresh food to avoid any cooking whatsoever.

Inflation is far more harmful to individuals than a collapsing stock or property market because it directly affects people's cost of living, which they immediately feel. It is not surprising that the current market sentiment is extremely pessimistic. In today's economy, assistance is critical if we are to survive.

If you lack market knowledge, your best bet is to seek advice or support from a consultant or investing coach. Contacting a consultant may sound simple, but it's how I've managed to stay afloat in the market and increase my portfolio to roughly 65% since January. It is, in my opinion, the best way to get started in the industry right now.

No chance - too many people in this country PREFER to live in a country where millions and billions are taken out of the publics pocket to line the pockets of shareholders. Crazy as it is, a lot of people, especially Tory voters see it as their duty to be poorer so that the rich can get richer still - an unfounded but persistent cultural belief that goes right back to Royal Assent and centuries of instruction that aristocrats are a higher class of human being instead of the parasites that they are.

@@ebbeb9827 And nationalise the NHS, because it's not despites the façade saying that it is. The NHS is a nationalised front that is forced to use private business for all aspects of what goes on in it. Next time you see an ambulance look at the logos on it, they're all ran by private companies and have been for years, and a lot of different companies at that. The lie is that it's better like this, how can it be better to introduce private middle companies that are there to make profits. It's the same with MRI scanners, CAT scanners, even whole hospitals in some cases, built privately and rented to the NHS. The Tories sneaked in privatisation slyly. People around the world are making profits off our health issues. Edit: I've been informed that the mass murderer Tony Blair had something to do with the sell off of the NHS as well. If someone desires to be in a position of power be very wary of that person, mandatory MRI scans to check for sociopathy I say. And, severe punishments for lying as a politician. We need a revolution. People need to get angry. The liars in this videos spout the same rubbish that got us into this place. There should be laws in place around lying when you're a politician. If you lie, and it's found out, then it's instant prison. It's not difficult to not lie. We need more transparency with media sources as well. Who owns what media companies. What shares and business interests these owners have. There should be statistics on how much wealth the owners of these media sources set to gain based on the events they're trying to scare us into or away from. I've got no hope for any of that really though. I have some savings, a pension that leaves me marginally better than being homeless, no children. I'm thinking of going to live in India peacefully for 10 years or so and then check to see if England has improved, if not then I'm calling it a day. I struggle holding a full time job and if a full time job can't support me anymore then I don't want to live.

Labour wasn't any different, we've known this was going to happen for over 20 years. When labour was in power how many nuclear power plants did they commission or give the Green light for? How many coal plants did they decommission? They're all to blame. Nationalisation of energy is only a stop gap, to avoid printing even more money to pay the wholesalers we need to be energy independent, order north sea gas platforms owned by the UK to lower prices. Build nuclear as quick as possible, recommission the coal plants, convert Drax back to coal, invest in existing open cast for short term.

Living in a van or a vehicle is not easy but it's worth it! Think of the money that you save such as rent, electricity, water bill, sometimes here in the States you have to pay a apartment or insurance tax on a house, if you're in an apartment do you have to pay for a pet fee, and you have to pay for a garbage fee, then there's groceries.. when you live in a van or a car your bills for groceries shrink drastically and believe it or not you find out that you end up eating healthier living in a car or a van then you do in the house and apartment! So all the money you save right there is going to help you put away money for either property in the future or travel or whatever your heart's desire. Also when you live in a van or a car you can scope out where you're going to park at night and there are a lot of times where you can actually Park and sleep close to your place of work which means less gasoline that you're going to have to spend. So the only real big bills that you need are car insurance and gasoline and a little bit of food for groceries everything else you put it away and it could be scary and a little bit different for the first two to four weeks but let me tell you after that it's not hard at all. Let the internet do the walking for you here in the United States there are apps that you can utilize where it will tell you where you can Boondock for free and also if you prefer to pay but not a lot of money they have where you can park and pay but very minimal amounts. I have tons and tons and tons of information and do's and don'ts when you live in a car or a van. But other than that think of how much you could save in living in a car or van. Some people call it homelessness I don't call it being homeless I call it being houseless. I would call it living in a house on wheels. You don't like the neighborhood change it. You don't like the area you can move. You want a different scenery by all means turn on the ignition and you can have a new scenery as often as you want.

@@Aztec1050 It really depends on what part of the country you live in and your individual circumstances. £30k - £40k may not go far in places like London or if you have a family or a lot of financial obligations (like an apartment service charge), but in other parts it's actually not a bad wage, especially if your partner is earning a similar amount. The uk government has left this far too late. I can see this all repeating itself but this time there will be a lot more younger people joining them.nobody should have to endure stress of trying to get by day by day. mental health will be in need more and more as people will be so stressed out wondering how to pay their bills. To me the uk is far too way behind and the sooner this conservative government goes the better. The standing charges are less than a cup of tea in a cafe. Stop pretending that there is a massive crisis. Just use less and you will pay less. Don’t heat the whole house, just the room that you are in. Turn the boiler down low. Take very short showers, never a bath as it uses a massive amount of energy + water. Get educated in energy cost and usage. It seems most people haven’t a clue and just do anything they feel like and waste energy. Most of all, if you have children, get them realise they have to make sacrifices, and that will be one of the best life lessons you can give them. This problem is only temporary.

Thats right, the global economic crisis, which we had seen be caused by the banking crash.... they said labour were spending too much and that caused it. This should have been warning enough of their complete economic illiteracy and incompetence. They have spent the last 12 years under investing in society whilst protecting their mates like the bankers who caused the crash; and now we've arrived here; working people are struggling more than ever, whilst CEOs and major shareholders are richer than ever. Liz Truss says she will deal with the Cost of Living Crisis via tax cuts and there is an Immediate outcry that the alleged poorest will not be helped, meaning those on Universal Credit and other limited, means tested benefits. For myself and many others like me though, it is a refreshing change. I live on a small works pension which I got when I took early retirement due to ill health/disability, after tax I am three pounds seventy pence over the threshold for U.C. This means I pay full rent, I get none of the free things offered to those on U.C. and I lost out on the 650 cost of living award. Ffs wake up, there are workers, sick people, carers etc who do not qualify for U.C who as a result are probably even poorer than those on it. Poverty does not start and end with those claiming means assessed benefits.THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.

She's planning to cut corporation taxes yet further, ours are already low by global standards. It's not whether you cut tax, it's what you cut and for whose benefit. One of the measures taken should be to increase the winter fuel payment above what is planned, this will help people in your situation. Edit : it might not help you actually, if you're still under retirement age. Still think it should be done, but there should also be a payment you can apply for if you are low income but can't get UC. They could taper it so the closer you are to UC level, the more you get.

I have cut expenses to the minimum and stocked up on food. Also moved money out of the bank, because I don't trust what is coming. Too many claims that some bank will be going bankrupt. That happened in the Great Depression and banks simply closed down, taking people's money as they did. Early this year I was able to pay off my house, and this month I paid off all debt.
