Paul Farrington and Robert "Ziggy" Ziegler react to Jordan Love's record-breaking 4-year $220 million contract extension with the Green Bay Packers. The guys discuss why Love is worth the huge investment, how open a Super Bowl run is for the Packers this season, and what changes in Green Bay now that their budding star QB is paid.

The first Packer game I remember seeing was the Ice Bowl, I was ten years old. Not a good time to become a Packer fan, they mostly sucked the next 25 years - '67 until Favre's arrival in '92. For those 25 years it seemed the drought would never end. Then among the best QB play since '92. I guess that's why they play the games? You guys do a great job, thank you.

Others are taking the time to tell how long that they've been a Packers fan. Here's my story. Our high school marching band performed for halftime of a Packers game in October 1967. Yes, high school marching bands were the halftime entertainment back then. When the Packers made the playoffs that December, our band director said the Packers asked him if there was a student who would volunteer to be a flag barer. He asked our entire band during class and I threw my hand up. Little did I know then, that the temperature would be about 15 below zero and wind chill of 55 below zero. I proudly carried one of the four flags in during pre-game for the national anthem. Then we had seats behind and at the right end of the Cowboys bench. When Bart Star followed Jerry Kramer's infamous block, the view from the Cowboys sideline was perfect and the Boys, and me, saw the hole open and Star crossed the goal line. I'll never forget it.

I’m a diehard packer fan, I watched every snap of the season last year, and Kurt Warner broke it down better than I could, but love early was actually missing guys. It wasn’t all on the Rookies. Then suddenly mid game against the Steelers something went off in his head, and from that point on, he was unbelievable.
@stevedrake604
@stevedrake604 2 ай бұрын
I think it was a combination of factors in the early struggles. The OL was not very good after Bakh went on IR, and the Packers couldn't establish a running game to set up play action. All those things improved as the season went on, and yes the Steelers game felt like a change in their offensive look and energy.

The reports out of packers camp has been the defense has been eating the offenses lunch. D Line dominating O Line, DBs are ball hawking…offense is a mess and defense is living it up. Love shows up to practice this AM and all of the sudden the defense is having to do pushups and run laps cause the offense is torching them.

You guys are pretty good stats wise, so I’ll ask about comparisons between Love’s team and Roger’s team as they marched to their Super Bowl season. I’ve watched this game long enough to know that there are so many variables involved in a successful championship run to get out in front of my skis, yet I’m curious if your analytical dives can plot a similar course. The Farve team won earlier too, but that team was stacked and the NFL rules were also different enough to separate it from the subsequent teams, I think anyway. It’s actually super disappointing that they didn’t win two or three titles. That’s another question though for another day. Thanks again for your honest and dutiful analysis.

For perspective, the great Viking quarterback Fran Tarkington, who led his team to 3 Super Bowl appearances, had a peak annual earning of $250,000. Of course, the NFL's profit margin and salaries today are huge, but the average old time football player earned relatively peanuts back in the day. The Packers were wise to pay Love now, rather than later when the cost of his salary would be substantially higher.

Here's what I'm thinking as a Packers fan: We have no plan B. Love looked really, really good at the end of the season. Will he sustain it? Will he get better? Will he regress? I don't know. It's a gamble, but most QB contracts are a gamble, and I'm certain there are plenty of other teams willing to pay Love and take the risk that he is the guy. But paying him is easily the best option the Packers have right now, because there's no indication whatsoever that any of the other QBs on the Packer's roster or in free agency can take this team to the playoffs and have the same potential long-term upside.
@williamhermann6635

The, "now they have tape on him" argument makes less than zero sense. It was the first part of the season when they had less tape on him that he was just ok with his rough patches. As the season went on and they kept getting more tape on him and how to play him for defenses, he rose above and went on an 11 game heater to end the season. The more film on him, the better he got. If the, "now there is more film on him" argument actually held water, Love would have came out with a stellar start but then faded as the season went on.
@ThePaulFarringtonShow

Well, they didn't have an off-season to look at it, plan, and prepare. That's the big difference--teams will be looking at that with the Packers circled as a threat.

These teams pour over film all season. They could see what he was struggling with and keep doing that to Love. Love though ascended above that to ball out. It wasn't a matter of what teams can do to him, it was the fact it was his first season and as the season goes on, he figured out this game called QBing in the nfl.

From Mike Florio: “The four-year, $220 million extension ($55 million per year in new money) combines with the existing $10.5 base salary for 2024, creating a five-year, $230.5 million deal ($46.1 million per year). The deal has $100.8 million fully guaranteed at signing, with a practical guarantee of $140.3 million. After only two seasons, the full guarantee moves to $160.3 million. The contract binds the Packers to Love for three years. If they’d release him after the 2026 season, they’d be saddled with $20 million in guaranteed salary for 2027, subject to offset.” He’s the 9th highest paid QB. Between Kirk and Kyler. All Packers fans should be thrilled with this and all NFCN opponents should be wetting themselves.

As the youngest-team during the 2023-2024 season in the NFL & only having gotten younger via Bakhtiari & Jones & whonot departing, the Pack's got more than just a window of a "Couple" years. By the law of averages, 2 teams of the NFC North will probably not realize their upward trajectories. Could be the Bears. Could be the Vikings. The Lions could very well cool off & be eclipsed by 2 of their Division counterparts. Who knows...could even be the Packers. But, my sense is that the Pack (youngest team last year only getting younger + the gluttony of WR & TE talent + Josh Jacobs + Xavier McKinney + Hafley's new D sparking up vets like R.Gary + the new class of Defensive talent (Bullard, Cooper, Williams) have the best currents odds for the next 3, 4 or more years in the NFC North. Bears & Vikings still have Roster valleys to elevate, while Lions are will have to refresh sooner than later to avoid becoming the Division's aging bunch. BUT, either whichever way, the NFC North is going to be amazingly entertaining here for the next several years!!!

@@ActiœnMan Yeah... go back 3 years to be relevant. Every power ranking has Detroit over GB. Detroit has 5 guys in the top 25 under 25. GB?? Zero. Detroit aint going anywhere.

@bradpirochta9293 LOL You talk like power rankings mean anything. Most useless week to week changing garbage metric there is. NFL had Brock Purdy off the top 10 QBs and had Rodgers in there after a year of being out the whole year. Tell you know nothing without saying it out loud. Detroit always Detroit. Just like you wasted Barry Sanders and held him in NFL hell you'll waste your one year of wonder too 🤣

Ofc he’s worth it. Franchises wish they had this problem. Passes the eyes test, makes elite elite throws effortlessly.

I think Love is a good QB, he's demonstrated he can be... but he's only had half a year of good play. He was not good the first half of last year and it really took Aaron Jones coming back for the team to regroup. While I like extending him... I'm really not sure his value is equal to what they paid based on his previous lack of experience. You want to give a SB winning (or appearing) QB that kind of money or one who has takien you to multiple playoffs on the previous contract... fine. That's probably a good call. But I just dunno about this one.

Jordan is going to have a chip on his shoulder this year due to companies ranking him below Stroud. Not even making the top 10 in some cases!! He’s gonna be lightning

Funny enough the last two QB classes after Love were basically all busts or guys who have been extended so the QB market is going to slow down a ton. Besides Dak and Brock, I don't forsee any big QB deals for the next two years.
