I remember when this happened, the guy used it on hard mode yogg sarron and got the world first kill because of the shirt. It was almost instantly known about because of all the top guilds racing to do it at the time got beat out by some weenie that couldn't help himself, and to be completely honest, neither would have I.

Abusing something that was unintended is called "exploiting". And why the fuck would a GM get banned for typing the wrong item ID when restoring a player's account? Would you lose your job over a very basic mistake?

Regardless of the green text, if your a GM employed to do correct work, and then proceed to give someone a "GM only item" by mistake, then that is the GM's fault, not the acquirer. This logical way of thinking about this, is everywhere in our daily life. So I have no clue what exactly, you spend your time on in, real life. But it certainty isn't improvement or regulations, or rules that should be followed by everyone. Also, the bias for GM's cause their GM's is funny. Their humans, and they can make mistakes. People who play the game, can make mistakes. But this case is too obvious and is one of the reasons why GM's doesn't exist anymore. For this exact reasoning. The player that is involved in the wrong doing of the GM, isn't banned by the way. :). So don't pre-judge to harshly.

Everybody with half a brain cell knew they'd get banned if they abused that item. The story of Martin Fury really was a great showing of how Blizzard even back then would not own up to even tiny mistakes It all started because a guy named Leroyspeltz got hacked, lost pretty much his entire inventory, and in the process of trying to restore his account (which took around 5 months) he was accidentally given this dev item along with a host of completely random shit, his level 13 warlock received a small amount of gear along with Martin Fury. Since the guy didn't get a full restore of everything he had, he thought it was actually an intentional move by a GM presumedly to help get him back up to where he was, because how the hell would a GM make this level of a mistake? The item also had a limited charge count which might've added to this belief, everybody essentially thought it was a joke by a GM. I imagine a pretty high level of frustration was there as well, it had taken them 5 months to get to his hacked account and when they did they just dumped a bunch of random gear and items of all levels on the guy and called it done. Eventually the guy shared it with a friend of his, Karatechop who I believe had also been hacked at one point and they used it to go clear some raids with a few guild members, Ulduar, Eye of Eternity, and Obsidian Sanctum, around 14 times. This earned them some pretty significant achievements including some world firsts a lot of people didn't really know existed, unbeknownst to them they actually cleared several of the most difficult achievements for those raids using it. Eventually Blizzard found out and temporarily banned THE ENTIRE GUILD for 24 hours, many of the guild members didn't even know what was happening as this was a pretty large guild. Blizzard then banned Karatechop permanently without any real communication, this was his first infraction, they claimed to send him an email explaining why but Karatechop says he never received this, he also tried to open a ticket but also never received a response. For about a month people just assumed Karatechop was a hacker that had somehow obtained the item via nefarious means and Blizzard to my knowledge never actually acknowledged their own mistake. Blizzard more or less tried to hoist the entire responsibility onto Karatechop who wasn't even the original owner of the item. If I remember right Karatechop also stated he wasn't actually the one who had the item by the time they started using it, he was however, the leader of the guild and Blizzard apparently held him responsible for his guilds actions.

IIRC, Karatechop is the one using the item. By that time there was logs about a players max damage in a single hit, and for Karatechop that damage is exactly the same with Flame Leviathan's HP.

Blizzard has only ever cared about optics. In the case of Martin Fury; it was easier for them to call an entire guild cheaters than it was to admit that a GM fucked up. However, even today you can get perma-banned just for being inconvenient because they have it built-in to their "support" system... If you get reported enough then you get an automatic punishment, even if the reports are complete lies and you haven't actually done anything wrong. But on top of that, even if you appeal that punishment and get it overturned; they don't actually remove it from your account's record. It'd be like still having a criminal record even after you were proven innocent. What that means for your account is that if you ever get a punishment, even if you get it removed, the next one you get will be worse... You'll be treated like a repeat offender even if you've never done anything wrong. And it doesn't stop at once or twice; it keeps going until you're on your last strike and then they'll automatically permaban you *for literally nothing,* and you _can't appeal a permanent ban._ I'm speaking from first hand experience, by the way. They did this to me back in 2017.

@@90Rush Karatechop did use it at some points yes, but it never had anything that prevented him from trading it, you could use it and then trade it. He claimed to have used it a couple of times but the last few it supposedly wasn't in his possession but in the possession of an unnamed guildmate.

I can't believe how big of deal this was at the time. It should have gone like this: They one shot some bosses, Blizzard finds out, they revert the gear and achievements, everyone has a laugh at how silly video games are sometimes. Instead it a big moral debate. "The item said cheater. They should have contacted Blizzard right away. What he did was wrong. He knew it was wrong." Like he should feel guilt and shame for killing fictional monsters incorrectly in a computer game for teenagers. This is a game where people corpse camp real players and compete to see who can be the most horrible in trade chat, but the real players suffering are the ones who thought someone got an achievement earlier than they were supposed to. It was a GM's mistake and Blizzard's reaction was to ban a whole guild, even people who didn't know about the item.

I was actively raiding Ulduar back when this incident happened during Wrath. I remember some of us in my guild, at the time, pulling up Karatechop's armory page and refreshing it every 30 minutes or so to see all the new pieces of gear he had equipped as the result of killing the bosses so fast. At that time, we didn't know how he obtained Martin Fury, but you could clearly see him wearing it on his armory page. About 18 hours later, the entire raid team was permanently banned from the game lol

Then the raid team members made a post on the official WoW forums about what happened and Blizzard looked into it further. After that, most of the raid team had their permabans reduced to something like 1 or 2 weeks suspensions. But yea, Karatechop kept his perma.

Ok hear me out on this one. I just read the background to this story and its extremely interesting. I remember this vividly, back when I was playing during this time period 2008/2009 there was this MASSIVE wave of accounts being hacked. Like it happened all at once including to me. It was very odd to me, there was 0 reason I should have been hacked along with like 70% of the guild. I was in college at the time studying cyber security, and I went above and beyond the very basic safe practices to secure my account...like i went to ridiculous lengths, so when this massive wave of stolen accounts was taking place something didn't seem right and this story brings me back. How does a GM accidentally send an item like this? Its interesting that the security tokens came out around the same time all of these accounts were "hacked" and they cost 6 fucking dollars. I remember telling my brother blizzard was probably behind these account hacks to sell and incorporate these new security tokens. After reading this story, along with blizzard selling its soul around the same time as well, Im even more convinced there was fuckery involved

In the original story the guys who got the Martin Fury thought it was a genuine gift from the Devs and therefore used it liberally. When they were discovered by Blizz, every single online Guild member got a 24-hour ban except for Karatechop, who got permanently banned. He was quite upset about this because he thought the item was purposefully given to him. It is a legendary WoW story and afaik the last of its kind.

I think the final boss is able to alert every GM's attention in thier currently database systems somewhere. Likely The first realm achievements or they havent kill any single of the final boss each on thier servers's reach alert at blizzard peoples.

Blizzard since the game started has a "war room"(imagine the main NASA room you'll see in movies-almost identical) in which a large team of people watch big screens at the front of the room that correspond with current player activity as well as in-game things happening. When raids dropped, they too will monitor what's happening a lot of the time but they don't need to either because they are absolutely notified upon completions of a raid even if it's not world firsts. Guilds would get banned for cheating on raids where the guild had completed it a lot already but because of the raid ID and corresponding boss ID's it's easy for them to see potential cheaters and just review what has happened
