For the first time, I agree with Loni! I was never given an allowance as a kid. I was told "We shouldn't have to pay you to do things around here. You live here, too!" Then, after graduating high school and getting a job and earning my own money, I'd go hard on spending it on things I want and things I was denied because I didn't have money as a teenager. Of course, here comes my mother "Why are you spending all your money? You should save it instead of letting it burn a hole in your wallet!" What irritated me about that was, when you had the opportunity to teach your child about earning money and saving it, you refused... and yet, somehow, you expect them to suddenly know and understand the importance of saving money at age 18 when they finally get their own for the first time? That's why I laugh when people say non-parents shouldn't give advice to parents. Not ALL parenting decisions are best!

Exactly that's why kids go to college and get in caught up in debt from credit cards because "old school" parenting says do what I say or get a whooping. But a whooping doesn't solve everything thing if there is no true lesson behind it. People talk bad about us millennials but they forget we are still young and learning. We actually could change the world and make it better when we get wiser but they just down play us like we aren't worth a damn but they raised us. Couldn't get mcdonalds with our mcdonalds money because you just expect us to have a job at 12 🙄🙄🙄. 😂😂😂😂

Loni's story was so cute, aw lol. I never received an allowance for doing chores, but I do think it's a good thing. The earlier children learn about working and saving money, the better they'll turn out. If you can't give them an allowance, allow them to have a little after school job once they turn 16y.o.

I don't think its necessarily healthy to live in a household where the opinion of the child is never considered. I don't want my kids to be robots and just obey any authority figure without questioning them, that can be a dangerous precedent to set. I agree with Loni, allowances are the bomb. I'd clean the house for the week and get my 5$ and rent my video games at Videotron for the weekend and it made me super happy.

@suikoden3299

***** It's not about arguing, its just about hearing the opinion of the child. Its not disrespectful to ask for justification for actions. Parents are suppose to teach their children how to act, this includes justifying why they do stuff so the child can know there is thought put into it. Questioning it is not disrespectful if you keep the wording respectful. Its just a difference of opinion here, no need to argue because there is no right answer ;)
@kenyattaknox5163
@kenyattaknox5163 8 жыл бұрын
+Leon G it's more than about arguing. You don't want to "discipline" your kids to the point where you don't even know who they are when they are "grown". Allow them to develop, parent and children argue, heck parents and parents argue. Telling someone this is my house and my rules, doesn't work.
@vlonevlone6365

Everyone is so for beating your kids and my word is law that doesn't work for everyone tbh. you can't constantly teach a kid their opinions and feelings don't matter and to not ask questions then be surprised when they find out their kid is being bullied. or their teen ends up in an unhealthy or abusive relationship. because you from as long as they remember taught them not to question things and that their feelings and opinions aren't needed. Yes respect is important and everyone should teach I'm not saying let your kids run the show and do what they want. but don't be so quick to shoot them down or not hear what that have to say.
@BRITTWOODNESHIE
@BRITTWOODNESHIE 8 жыл бұрын
exactly. every time kids want to voice their opinions the parent is always like "no, shut up, i didn't ask for your opinion". You have to let kids express their feelings and voice their opinions to fully understand them. I don't even have kids, but I think all kids know what it's like to be shut down sometimes when parents don't let them say what they feel.

Parents who do that are bullies themselves. They are surprised when their kids are bullied and marry an abuser because those parents are not cognizant....They follow orders without ever thinking critically. That is why many bad customs go down for generations and no one can see where the problems come from.. I grew around people like that; they repeated all that were done to them while suppressing the anger from their past..
@tizzbabe4386
@tizzbabe4386 6 жыл бұрын
YES! I strongly believe that beating your children and ignoring their opinions and feelings leads to them being bullied by other kids and getting into abusive relationships. Parents are a child’s first everything, and parents don’t realize that especially black parents!

The fact that you don't understand the difference is the problem. Defying your parents authority is a good way to get hurt. What do you think happens in the adult world when you defy authority? it ain't a spanking, it's usually a bullet. It's not to say that you shouldn't question authority or stand up for yourself when you are in the right. No, this is about doing what you know you have to do. Prisons are fully of people that didn't respect authority.

My parents were young parents (both 19) and they always let me ask questions and voice my opinion. They were able to guide me through voicing my opinion without being disrespectful. I think it made me a more understanding, confident person. Kids are people too; they have their own voices. I think its wrong for parents to stifle that and then expect the kids to grow up and know how to communicate with other people.
@KingsPromise31
@KingsPromise31 8 жыл бұрын
With my parents I was allowed to ask questions when they told me to do things. Not disrespectfully, but I was allowed to gain understanding as to what they wanted from me. Like you said I think it helped me to be articulate and be able to get my point across without being nervous or afraid. Plus, I got paid for some chores and some I didn't. I think it's fair to give to your kid if they do well and are respectful. I think it's also important for them to know that they aren't entitled to it.

I'm like Adrienne, I can't believe parents would think to bribe their kids to be decent human beings at home? Your parents work all day to give you food and shelter and you want them to pay YOU for keeping _their_ house you live in rent-free clean? The way I grew up it is socially unacceptable to expect to take without expecting to give. That is so wrong, no matter the age. If you're lucky and your parents want to teach you about money you get an allowance, but no way in hell do you refuse to do chores or expect an allowance for making a small sacrifice to the people who sacrifice for you all day every day. smh people tell me it ain't so, this is not how you raise decent human beings!

I agree with Lonnie. Tamera and Tamar is lying. When you and your family reach a certain income bracket, children get allowances. That's just it. Don't lie, explain cellphones, pricey clothes, shoes and trips. And that lady that said kids shouldn't get anything for helping out, is selfish. As a parent it's important that we understand that our children have a different scope of function and perception of the world. We have careers, 99% of children do NOT. So they do not have any way tangibly to bring in money on their own. BUT as working parents, WE DO! Yes, our children live in our homes, eat food we purchase and enjoy the security we provide. All of those things are not luxuries, THEY ARE NECESSITIES! Don't do ALL of that stuff and watch Children services take your children and you become ostracized. Furthermore, we conceived our children and birthed them. They didn't whisper in our ear and say "hey give birth to me". We did what was necessary to make their creation possible. Wake the EFF up people. That is not loving at all. Withholding money from someone is akin to saying, I value this money more than I value you. Our children see that.

They have money to buy their children nice clothes. How are Tamera and Tamar lying when their kids are still toddlers? You really think they are making their beds and washing dishes? lol. Not all parents think children should get allowances just because they make good money.

@kenyattaknox5163 8 жыл бұрын
You can't be talking about the same show, because Tamera and Tamar have said before that their children will get allowances. Tamera said that when she was on Sister Sister, she and Tia got allowances got doing chores at home as well. Tamar said that Toni provided for her as a kid. She made alot doing background for Toni and Toni got her a cushy position working with her through her record label. As a parent, if I make a certain amount of money and don't allow my children to enjoy the fruits of my labor as well, that's NOT love. Don't let these ladies fool you trying to sound "regular" nor "average". They are in the top 10% earning bracket. They have nannies, housekeepers, pet sitters and a host of other people doing "chores" for them. They are NOT about to let their children be without money in their pockets.

"As a parent, if I make a certain amount of money and don't allow my children to enjoy the fruits of my labor as well, that's NOT love." I believe there's a difference between giving out allowances for housework and buying your kids toys. Parents still buy their kids the toys and the electronics they want. There's a difference. If i were a kid, i think i would enjoy just getting bought things out of love rather than having to do housework for it.

Here's why I disagree and agree... I lived in a household when I was young where there wasn't any routine for cleaning (wish there was) so when the house got too dirty we all went in...for the exception of my father. For all years I lived I never saw my father help without whining. My father used to verbally abuse me and my mother, so I would help not to get paid but to try and stop any potential arguments. Whenever people try and spin the "millenials are crazy" shade I can't 100% agree. My younger sister helps around the house these days, but not all the time. She's an All A student, has won awards, and is active with her church and choir. Her only chore is taking out the trash and sweeping the floor. Her room becomes a mess time after time, since she's stressed about school (I don't blame her) I wish people would try and take the kids side a bit. These days, school is 10x harder than it was in the past. My sister is learning chemistry in middle school for gods sake! I'm not saying kids shouldn't do chores. They should! But the parents should be good examples as well. And motivate their kids to do chores without causing verbal abuse damage. I think also, it's not a bad thing for kids to get allowances for chores because that itself teaches self reliance and hard work. And something I lacked, which is consistency. I don't look it much as bribing, but as motivation. But maybe that's just me.

For the same reason Tamar was hemming and hawing when Tamera asked her about being a neat freak. Tamar apparently doesn't clean her house herself - from how she responded. She may be a clean freak but like she said - she likes to cook but doesn't like to clean. I guess she has a housekeeper and doesn't do it herself like Tamera does. Nothing wrong with that but I guess Loni knows that.

Thank you Loni. I remember my mom making me work form my allowance in middle school. She really didn’t want to give me allowance younger because she felt like her house her rules but as a single mom it wasn’t really working for her that way. She gave me $100 a week and told me that now that I got allowance I was in charge of my food. She taught me how to budget lunch for the week and groceries for snacks and things for after school and how to have a little bit left over for movies with friends on Friday’s. I could get bonuses for completing extra unasked chores and extra credit in school. Being a parent isn’t about free service or about preparing your children for the future. Yeah when you have your own house no one will clean it for you so no you shouldn’t get paid for merely brushing your teeth, taking a shower, getting up on time for school, doing homework, and keeping your environment live-able and clean. However anything that falls outside of those lines, cooking for everyone, doing laundry that isn’t their own, washing all the dishes after a large party, putting up shutters, doing extra credit projects in school... like parents these are teachable moments why chose to teach your child that it doesn’t matter how hard you work you won’t be rewarded. Think of it this way you chose for them to be head so lead by example in a teaching I like to call choice and responsibility. Your choices have responsibilities they didn’t choose to be here so the person who did is now responsible for their well fare and therefore must provide for that. Sure ask them for help by any means but don’t teach them that their time holds no value. Remember that when you denounce your child the chance to ask you why you teach them that asking the question why is wrong and that is a very dangerous thing. If little tommy is being mistreated and never ask why he won’t even know that he is being neglected, abuse or even sexually assaulted because he was to afraid to ask why is this happening, why would you be mad? Always let your kids know that they can trust you to ask the tough questions even when you don’t have the answer because you’ll learn together . Build trust because the enemy will always try to cause distrust in those situations and you don’t want to add to their ammunition.

I had the best of both worlds of being poor first then growing up seeing capital income and success through hard work in the capital system. I got an allowance for taking out the trash to pulling weeds and working on the house. Shadowing my grandfather to fix things around the house and even to help maintenance our industrial lawn mower. I also learned that having that income helped me learn to save for the things i NEED vs what i WANT in life. but i had to figure out the hard way the rest of managing money and earning it as i was able to work legally in age. Trying to do all of that with having Audio Processing Disorder and getting RA when i was 21 in college has been quite the bigger struggle vs trying to be "normal" and make a living. THAT in combination of having a disorder and a incurable disease is DIFFICULT. So i totally agree that earning money and respect to come with it is value to a personalty.

It’s very important for kids to do their chores and value cleanliness and using your hands to fix things (change tires , clean ,cook etc) , but another value trait we should value kids to do is to learn (read books and summarize them ) vocabulary , research , utilizing their brain to absorb knowledge and pay them for it .

When my kids were younger they were taught to help out without being paid. However, the older (9 & 11) they got it was more of a task for me to make sure they did them but they expected to get an allowance. So now chores and allowance have now been combined... they have a list of chores they are paid for if they do them they get a set amount per chore and if they don't they don't get paid. Been working like a charm! :)

I agree that parents shouldn't pay their kids for basic chores, but I don't agree with the concept that their is no conversation about it. If your child understand why he or she is required to do certain tasks, then they will be more receptive to doing them. You should never want your child to feel like you are just being controlling. This goes hand in hand with the saying " My house, my rules." All that is telling your child is that of they want things to change, they need to leave. When the parents should be saying "I am the parent. I have lived longer, I know things that you don't know yet. I know best and I won't allow you to make this kind of mistake." One way makes you look like you are controlling, the other makes you appear to be concerned.

My parents always taught me to ask questions and to be independent. I had practice 3 days a week 40 minutes away from home, so they began to pay me for cleaning the restroom twice a week so that I could eat. A rule in our house is that we need to wash our own dishes as soon as we can reach the faucet, we've always been responsible for wiping down the table after dinner and for keeping our rooms livable. I believe in allowances, but only when your children learn the value of money.

The first part is in response to how insulted you all were at the mere thought that parents would treat their children as if they were equal. My father is in business, and he always taught me to negotiate if I felt cheated. (I got a raise to 15 dollars for 3 meals a week. I didn't ask for much, but he lowballed me so that I could challenge him.) Negotiation isn't a bad thing, it taught me to stand up for myself and to challenge authority when necessary.
