Charlie Byrd once opined a great piano arrangement transferred to guitar should sound “ guitaristic” as if written on the instrument: you’ve truly done that here and you even managed to convey Newman’s ascerbic lyrical quality in your vocal… congratulations! That was wonderful! Newman is America’s greatest songwriter of the past 60 years…the Europeans know this, why doesn’t this country ?

You don't know me sweetie but my name is Emily I play music in corpus Christi Texas and I just heard that Randy Newman tune when I started watching Monk because they use that song for the intro... I fell in love with it I'd love to play it on piano cuz it sounds so awesome on piano but you did a great job I just want to let you know that okay? I play guitar also if you get a chance answer me and tell me what key you're playing this in I love the key he plays it in but he kind of jumps around so anyway kudos babe it was awesome by the way I'm 74 and I'm still doing it for a living babe. 😊

Hi, Emily! I love this song too…. I’ve dug a lot of Randy Newmans work through the years, although I’m afraid he’s descended into self-parody these days. I play it starting in b minor (actually, I play the chords in a min, and capo the second fret (bc I’m old and lazy))… the second verse is in e minor, and it stays there until the end of the form, so you have to transition back into b if you want to go thru more than once….keep on keeping on! and I will too!
