Today we take a look at Balfour Beatty Plant & Fleet Services, Raynesway, Derby DE21 7BG.
We are joined by @PJ Audits on this one. We take a look at an abandoned vehicle outside and comment on the Electricity pylon training towers which they have on site.
We go into the reception and have a play with the Temperature Screening screen.
We speak to 2 staff and then the Armed Police Arrive to check us out.
Whilst they check PJ's car over, I use the spare time of the Sargent to put some questions to him. Some came back as no comment but some where answered.
Everyone leaves on good terms.
Enjoy!

That Sgt... Wow. Really quite humble isn't he? Like he had no chip on his shoulder. No ego. No pride. Straight. Just trying to do his job. But also clever. A thinking sort of person. But his position and responsibility of his job really hasn't gone to his head at all. I noticed that DJ Audits was surprised as well, once DJ realised too. Great audit. Totally. Excellent Sgt. Totally. Why can't all cops be like that Sgt. Just imagine the entire UK police services like that Sgt? Crime would be gone. But at the same time. UK would be so pleased with there police services to the fullest.

MOD police are always professional and respectful. They are selected and trained to handle situations without escalating. They aren't incentivised to harrass members of the public. Big difference to regular civilian police grunts. Good to know these guys are there, as some things need proper protection! They knew immediately what you guys were doing, and it's no threat.

The police are like the armed forces in a way, if your smart enough you can go in at a higher rank from the start, but still go through the same basic training as every other soldier/police officer to do so. Like sandhurst only for police. The armed police sign is very interesting as there are different colours of that same symbol, I have seen a red and a green one as well. There are also dots of different colours, what do the all mean? Probably different types of armoury and training or equipment on board, like a defib for example. No need for all the secrecy though, we pay for it. And were entitled to know what they mean. The mod police probably don't have to account for themselves the same way normal police do in that respect, using national security as their get out clause.

It's clear to me that the more highly trained an officer is, the more effective they are at assessing risk in any given scenario and the more relaxed they are when the perceived risk is low. This officer has the tools and training to deal with whatever life throws at him and so he has no reason to be a bully or be belligerent. On the other hand, an officer who is insecure and inexperienced is much more likely to escalate unnecessarily as a result of the fight or flight response. Kudos to the sergeant.

Where I live, the average 16 year old would make the "armed Police" embarrassed for being underarmed. Most Kids are given rifles at 14-15 years old and already know how to shoot well. We have a range on my farm and the Neighbors come by to practice before hunting season. We have the right to carry firearms almost everywhere and have little crime involving guns,as all are assumed armed. Of course, all Police are armed, but out here in the woods, they almost never need them.

The MOD police were " regularised " by the Home Office some years ago. This brought in the likes of the transport police, civil nuclear constabulary, Mersey tunnels police etc. They all have the same basic training, which is usually done in house, since the regional training centres were closed, with job specific additional training. MOD police are paid slightly less and their pension provision is poorer than civil police.

@DJ Audits; in reference to your question regarding the star; this stems from ACPO guidelines to aid in the coordination of responses to incidents and they are the same as the aerial roof marking which any police vehicle expected to respond to incidents should have, so while Incident Response Vehicles generally have them the PCSO outreach car and tea wagon won't. The roof markings are usually thermally reflective so they stand out on IR cameras in the dark and should also have number codes as well as standard PNC codes are used to further differentiate individual units and act as a call sign. This call sign should also be written somewhere inside the vehicle so officers know what it is as a number of officers allegedly had to stop, get out their vehicles and check their roof before this was standardised. You'll also find them on non police vehicles that may respond to incidents alongside the police such as Network Rail's Rail Incident Units or Highways Agency Enhanced Response Units, these will use their relevant PNC code or similar to further differentiate them. A star was chosen simply because it is a visually distinct, simple shape; there are four main markings and one secondary marking; Circle - General Response (anything that is not one of the below) Square - Public Order Personnel Carrier (usually a paddy wagon but you can see why they'd want to be able to easily ID them during disorder) Triangle - Dog Support Unit (given how dogs are coordinated for searches Five Point Star - Armed Response Unit (again you can see why they'd want to easily tell them apart from everyone else) Green Cross - Police Medics (used alongside other symbols and indicates the vehicle carries medical/fire fighting equipment alongside trained medical officers, most ARU's will have this as armed officers are medically trained) Some forces also discreetly stick the markings on the sides of vehicles to identify them from the ground but this varies force by force. As mentioned above while the roof markings stem from official guidelines the side ones don't so can be all sorts of strange shapes, the Met for instance being the special people they are use the same markings in different configurations on the sides of vehicles while still using standard roof markings. Hope that helped!

I would imagine the yellow asterisk is only required for liveried vehicles. If the vehicle is unmarked, I’m sure they don’t want to advertise the fact it is a police vehicle. It would defeat the purpose of being unmarked with such an obvious identifying symbol. I’m not commenting from a position of knowledge. I’m just applying, in my mind, a reasonable assumption.

Exactly that, unmarked vehicles are designed to look just like civilian cars and blend in so no distinctive markings

You're right however unmarked ARV's still stick out like a sore thumb. They are usually X5's with tinted windows all round, and usually dark grey or black. Some have covert blues which are not very covert at all. However that is changing, my former force, Merseyside is buying different brands of vehicle (cheaper) but they are still 4X4 's and the support vans are still very obvious.

Asterisk * on police vehicles is to identify it as an armed response vehicle identifiable by helicopter and other police units
