The other mom in the hospital break room was my favorite. I understand where his mom was coming from, but she really was an ignorant homophobe who pushed him away with her nonsense and then completely lost it when she found out. I get it, but girl, you did that.

I can't describe how badly it hit me when she said "he died yesterday afternoon". I just couldn't believe it, and it shot a hole right through me. Then the speech, how "they all die because of you"; it was more than I was expecting.

Jill didn't know Marcus in the hospital at the end, but she had been the support for so many of her friends, spent so much time at the hospital, got to know so many families from her frequent visits, and was so determined that no young men should die alone and isolated like Ritchie, that she just kept going back to sit with and befriend the patients who had no visitors and give them the comfort of friendly, comfortable company.

I also love that Ritchie said that he had so much fun. I felt that fun throughout this series and its what makes this series so special. Aids is horrifying and sad but people were finding family and having fun and feeling joy and we shouldn't forget.

I don't remember being as angry at a character as I was at his mother at the end. My sympathy for her completely vanished when I saw her keep Rithchie's friends from him at the very end. She was selfish, and didn't give her dying child what he wanted on his last day. People do not behave well in grief and the fact that her son was gay did fly in the face of the homophobic ideas that she was raised with but you stand up when your kid or anyone that you love needs you especially on his last day on earth. She robbed him and all of them of being able to say goodbye to the people that they loved the most. But I love that you felt for her, it's part of why I love your reactions and I agree it's a lot even though I do think she deserves it to put the blame fully on her.

This episode always makes me cry. That mic drop where you think he is about to see them and...nope. He's gone. Heartbreaking and brilliant. Also the implication of Jill sitting with Marcus is because he's not someone she knows, but she's going to make sure if she can help it, no one is going to die alone like Ritchie did. I'm so glad you loved this series too. I'm looking forward to both Years and Years and Life on Mars!

I hear you, but I think the message is that sure the mother was in pain and loved her son, but she took her son away from his life for her own selfish reasons (understandable but still selfish). We dont live our lives to please our parents. They have to let us go. Jill pointed out that it is people like her who made their kids ashamed of sex, that leads to the pandemic because they pretend everythings ok. The mother was totally selfish and let her son die alone. Sure, I also understand her but she made the wrong choices and let her son down. That was the problem in the 80s, boys got HIV and the parents took them away to die alone and anonymously. Absolutely horrible. The show wasn't really criticising the sex imo, it was criticising society for hiding it away and bringing up kids to feel ashamed. Thats wrong. Anyway, very sad and great reaction :)

In my honest opinion, i think the mother loved HER idea of her son not who he was, like i said in a previous comment our bigotry is polite so it seems innocent to people outside the uk, his mother was vile

When they are sitting around the table at the end, so well done. It's so real in these moment, when you are all reminiscing and laughing about the good times, then a fleeting thought or comment sets one of you off randomly. At the very end when Jill was with Marcus, she doesn't know Marcus (neither do we), but she was struck by the number of patients in there alone, too ashamed to tell their families. So she is taking on the role of friend and family member to those patients, so they don't spend their last few days alone.

Your take is interesting and, as you said, different from most people who watch the show. As for me, I am 110% team Jill and team the other mom in the hospital break room. It's people like Jill who were the heroes during this crisis. There's a reason the slogan of ACT UP was "Silence = Death." Shame, ignorance, denial and silence kill. As for Richie's mom, she was selfish in the extreme and cruel in her selfishness, not even granting her son his dying wish to see his dear friends. You asked how we know Marcus--we didn't know him and neither did Jill. He was just another abandoned, dying man and Jill took it upon herself to go sit with him. There were real people like Jill who did that, and they deserve our undying appreciation. The other character that really touched me was Colin--sweet young guy and he was treated as if he was a criminal by the hospital. That's how it was for the first wave of guys who died of AIDS. The fear and panic was incredible because so little was known about the disease and so little attention was paid to it at first due to the fact that it was primarily hitting gay men. Colin's mom, now there was an admirable mother. Anyway, I really appreciate that you reacted to this show. I agree with you, it's pretty much a 10 out of 10. If you can stand it, I have a recommendation for another show along similar lines. Perhaps you have already seen it or have seen the Larry Kramer play it was based on, but if not, I very highly recommend the movie called The Normal Heart, from 2014, starring Matt Bomer, Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo, and many others. It deals with the onset of the AIDS crisis in New York. It's not an easy watch, but it's important and, for older gays like myself, portrays accurately the times we lived through. I think it's important for younger people, especially younger members of the LGBTQ community, to get a sense of what that era was like. Cheers, and as a new subscriber, I'm looking forward to more of your reactions.

Keeley Hawes, who played Richie’s mother, also played Lindsay Denton in Line of Duty. If you’re going to watch Line of Duty, you must watch from the start, as later series include constant references to previous characters and scenes.

When you listed all those shows you are going to react to, I almost woke the whole house and the neighbours: Christmas is coming early!!!!! About the show, as you said, Richie never talked to his family about his life, he shut them out, they could never learn to understand him like this and as the sensitive soul you are, you obviously felt that pain for the mother. That's why you are such a strong reactor. Still such a great show, with all those feelings, crying and laughing, great music, the drama, it had it all. About the show your mum watches, there are so many. I though you once said she saw Killing Eve but I'm not sure that would be it, a few others are Line of Duty, Broadchurch (David Tennant!), Midsummer Murders, Silent Witness, Prime Suspect, Luther, .... Whatever it is, I'm curious. Thank you again for your great reaction.

@@lolabroadhead3972 the only thing with line of duty is that there’s a LOT of information all of the time, a lot of names, you really have to be focusing to get the whole picture and remember who everyone is and everything that’s happened. It’s so, so, so, so, soooo good though. The gap between series is just painful to wait for. It usually ends up being the most viewed and highest rated show of the year in the UK on years where there’s a new series

I have to disagree with you about the Mom because in the hospital Jill tried to help the mom by letting her know they could work together but, the mom didn't want to hear it and only was trying to blame someone like the nurse , the lady ( who gave it back to her ) , Jill and then her husband . She wanted to be the son's friend more then she wanted to be a mom . He was in the best place when he was in the London hospital and it might have gotten him alittle more time but, The mom was so mad with his friends that she took him away and then kept him in the house . Even when he begging to see Jill . I think with the rant she gave the mom was partly for the mom and partly for the other friend's family ( the first one) and the police that beat her and her friends up . That she never said and it came out on that mom . It's something we all wanted to say to them all. Ps. I think you are going to love Years And Years . I found it kind of predicting the future. It showed you AI, Politics , social media, and even Covid. It's was filmed in 2017 and was out in 2018. Who knew all that would come to pass

9:31 Instances like this were sadly pretty common And as a result, even though in cities like London where it was happening enormously, and therefore the research was extensive and those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS could be better treated with every new development, too many died at home, alone, surrounded by homophobic parents who kept them hidden from the neighbours. This mother disgusts me. I know she’s just a victim of the oblivious deniers, but her behaviour is appalling. Good on the other woman in that canteen for calling her out. I’m 24 and didn’t live through this, but my Mum was, she was a teen in the 80s, and she was utterly moved by this show.

i share your sympathy for richie's mum, senor andres - given the era that Valerie would have grown up in, her knowledge of gay people would have been largely non-existent. nobody knew anybody who was gay - in 1960's UK sightings of gay people for the general public would have been mainly in tabloid newspapers where gay people were targets for scorn and derision and, come the 70's, lgbt+ characters - on the rare occasions they appeared - were most often seen as tragic figures - depressives or suicidal. during that era the blindness of 'straight' uk society was such that even when presented with flamboyant, out-there figures (see liberace, sir elton, freddie mercury et al) the prevalent ignorance meant that none of these people registered as 'gay'. given this background, Valerie is lost at sea, poor soul - she really has no idea what she is dealing with - her tragedy was that of the whole society. (thanks for a great reaction!)
