Neil Patrick Harris still has a big item on his bucket list that he’s “dying” to do - he wants to be in a superhero movie. “Big scale, CG elements, like a big, large movie,” the Tony and Emmy winner tells me on today’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “Like it could be Chris Nolan large, could be PlayStation 5 large. Like some kind of big where you’re doing wires.”
Years ago, Harris auditioned to play Nightcrawler in the second X-Men movie, 2003’s “X2: X-Men United.” “I remember being in the audition room on my haunches,” Harris says, adding, “I remember feeling insecure in my own skin at that time to be heroic and animalistic at the same time.” The part eventually went to Alan Cumming.
In his latest project, “It’s a Sin,” NPH plays an older gay gentleman who becomes a father figure and mentor to a young man coming to terms with his sexuality. The HBO Max limited series (premiering on Feb. 18), from “Queer as Folk” creator Russell T. Davis, is about a group of gay friends living in London during the early days of the AIDS epidemic. Davis first approached Harris about the role. “I got on phone call with Russell and his producing partner,” Harris says. “He told me about the idea, and that there was a character in it that he was interested in me playing. And I said, ‘Sure, I’d love to.’ And that was six months before. It was early on in the process. And then I thought it had gone away and then it appeared again and it was happening in earnest. And suddenly, I was in Manchester and learning an accent and growing a mustache and loving life.”

For a gay man that has never lost anyone to AIDS, this series sure made me feel as though I lost some very precious friends. Just excellent.

The show is so lucky to have Neil Patrick Harris involved in this show, not only is he a great actor in this, but all the work he's done in promoting the show, he's such a great spokesman.

Those of us who saw this originally this was hard to watch, well for me. I held the hands of many friends who had AIDS... also lost many to it.

The mold hit me hard. I never thought to imagine the thoughts of the people who just didn't know and never knew. Even not knowing one victim, that blind fixation just felt too human to be even slightly false.

“Dancing” is such a terrible generalization of what being gay can be defined. I always remember a line from Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart: “Why are all the idiots always on your side?” It is always so strange to me that a group of people that claim a cause of freedom of expression, create such constrictive and primitive definitions for themselves. There must be gay people out there who are not into dancing lol.! I don’t care about dancing... or boy George... but I am gay))).

Bowie told the world he wasn't straight 12 years before Boy George?? Strange they don't seem to know this.

@Cannibal Teddy I don't think he was playing. He had a year long affair with Lindsay Kemp, he met his first wife Angie because they were both sleeping with the same guy, he definitely had an affair with at least one of his gay managers. To gay people of my age there was only Bowie showing the way. I hope the gayaratti are not trying to re-write gay history (again) by playing down Bowie's contribution to the cause. I only say this because I recently saw two different lists of gay influential icons etc and Bowie wasn't on either and yet Elton and Freddie Mercury were?? Elton has raised millions for gay and aids charities but was still very much in the closet even at the end of the eighties (he was suing English newspapers etc) and Freddie never came out!! Yes Freddie was brilliant but he refused to support the gay movement or the aids charities at all whist he was still alive at least publicly.
